Windows Explorer Not Responding when Accessing Mapped Network Drive
One of my users is having issues accessing a mapped network drive. When she double clicks the drive to open it, Windows Explorer freezes and give a Not Responding in the title bar. If you open Task Manager then close Task Manager, the mapped drive becomes available and she can browse it like normal. If you close Windows Explorer and go back the mapped drive it works just fine. However, if she hasn't accessed that mapped drive for an hour or so, it freezes until you open and close Task Manager. The computer has Windows XP SP3 with all the updates on it running IE8. I went into the services and stopped Computer Browser and set it to manual. Any ideas one why the mapped drive would freeze upon first access? If I don't do the open and close of Task Manager it will stay frozen/non responding. So I'm not sure what is going one where just opening and closing Task Manager would cause it to start working again.

Hi,· Does this happen only when you try to access Mapped Network Drive or whenever she open’s any folder or Windows explorer on the system?· Was she able to access the Network drive before without any issues? I would suggest her to perform a clean boot on the system and then check whether she is able to access the Drive. Follow the steps mentioned in the article given below. How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" statehttp://support.microsoft.com/kb/310353Note: Put the system in Normal Startup by following the steps mentioned in ‘Steps to configure Windows to use a Normal startup state’ section. My Computer opens fine for her. When she clicks the mapped drive for the first time, it will give Not Responding for about 3-5 minutes then she can browse just fine. The computer is a fresh install. I mapped the drive for her and it came up fine the first time. The following day is when she reported that it was freezing up on her. I have the map drive set to Reconnect at Logon. I disconnected the drive and remapped it and even though the Window popped up for it, when you try to double click a folder in the drive it will freeze for a couple minutes then everything is fine after that. I will give the clean boot a try and post a follow up on the results.

I haven't had a chance to do the clean boot to see if that fixed her problem, however, another user in the same office is experiencing the same problem. The server is Windows 2008R2 and both clients are Windows XP SP3. They are both on a domain. If they wait about 5 minutes, the mapped drive becomes usable with no issues. It's only when they first access that network drive.

Hi, I would suggest you to try clean boot on your friend’s computer and check whether the issue persists. For other users who are facing this issue, since they are in a Domain environment, I would suggest you to post in TechNet forums for better assistance. I tried the clean boot solution and it did not work. Opening My Computer and clicking the mapped drive still hangs for about a minute before it populates the folders.
