Windows Explorer Crashes Constantly after upgrade to Windows 7 x64
I did an upgrade from vista home premium x64 to Windows 7 home premium a couple weeks ago and ever since, my Windows Explorer crashes at least 15-20 times a day. Sometimes it happens when I am in Explorer, sometimes some other application will crash and I'll see the little window saying that Windows Explorer has stopped working and is looking for a solution to the problem (but there never is one). I have an HP e9150t desktop (product: NY810AV#ABA) with a i7 920 processor, 6 GB RAM that is just six months old. I have an Nvidia GTS250 graphics card. All drivers and software versions are up to date. Following is the information that the computer has stored in the event viewer concerning these frequent crashes: Log Name: Application Source: Application Error Date: 12/23/2009 4:39:57 PM Event ID: 1000 Task Category: (100) Level: Error Keywords: Classic User: N/A Computer: deBlank-PC Description: Faulting application name: explorer.exe, version: 6.1.7600.16404, time stamp: 0x4a765771 Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 6.1.7600.16385, time stamp: 0x4a5be02b Exception code: 0xc0000374 Fault offset: 0x00000000000c6cd2 Faulting process id: 0x14ec Faulting application start time: 0x01ca84186d26532c Faulting application path: C:\Windows\explorer.exe Faulting module path: C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll Report Id: b68a23e5-f00b-11de-9ecb-00261863d8e4 Event Xml: <Event xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/win/2004/08/events/event"> <System> <Provider Name="Application Error" /> <EventID Qualifiers="0">1000</EventID> <Level>2</Level> <Task>100</Task> <Keywords>0x80000000000000</Keywords> <TimeCreated SystemTime="2009-12-23T21:39:57.000000000Z" /> <EventRecordID>10713</EventRecordID> <Channel>Application</Channel> <Computer>deBlank-PC</Computer> <Security /> </System> <EventData> <Data>explorer.exe</Data> <Data>6.1.7600.16404</Data> <Data>4a765771</Data> <Data>ntdll.dll</Data> <Data>6.1.7600.16385</Data> <Data>4a5be02b</Data> <Data>c0000374</Data> <Data>00000000000c6cd2</Data> <Data>14ec</Data> <Data>01ca84186d26532c</Data> <Data>C:\Windows\explorer.exe</Data> <Data>C:\Windows\SYSTEM32\ntdll.dll</Data> <Data>b68a23e5-f00b-11de-9ecb-00261863d8e4</Data> </EventData> </Event> Please help me. This has spoiled what I had hoped would be the dawn of a wonderful new experience with Windows 7. I am somewhere between a novice and an intermediate level user, so please be a bit more detailed than you might otherwise be when you respond with a solution to this problem. :-) Thanks!

Consider using e.g. Autoruns or ShellExView to eliminate shell extensions that could potentially be compromising the stability of explorer.exe. If that still does not help, can you create the following registry key hierarchy in the registry:[HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\explorer.exe\ ]In the explorer.exe key, create a REG_EXPAND_SZ value named DumpFolder and set the data for the value to %systemdrive%\explorerdumps . Ensure the %systemdrive%\explorerdumps folder exists, and then cause the crash to happen. There should be a dump file in %systemdrive%\explorerdumps. Upload that dump file to www.skydrive.com into the public folder and post the link to it. 1. Download ShellExView v1.41 Please Note: The third-party product discussed here is manufactured by a company that is independent of Microsoft. We make no warranty, implied or otherwise, regarding this product's performance or reliability. 2. Right-click the "shexview.zip" file, select "Extract All", the Extraction Wizard will prompt. 3. Click Next, input "C:\ShellExView" (without the quotation marks) in the "Files will be extracted to this directory" textbox. 4. Click Next and click Finnish. 5. Open the "C:\ShellExView" folder and double-click the "shexview.exe" file. It will scan the registry for all the shell extensions. 6. Select all the non-Microsoft extensions in pink by press "Ctrl" in the keyboard. 7. Click the "Disable Selected Items" on the toolbar and click Yes. 8. Restart your computer and check if the issue is resolved. In addition, you also can try Clean Boot. If the issue disappears in the Clean Boot environment, we can use a 50/50 approach to quickly narrow down which entry is causing the issue. Also scan your system for viruses and malware MCSE, MCSA, MCDST [If this post helps to resolve your issue, please click the "Mark as Answer" or "Helpful" button at the top of this message. Windows Explorer stopped all the time on my computer after installing and uninstalling Firefox due to the current bug in Internet Explorer. I could not open msconfig in the Search Box only in Task Manager and Safe mode. I could not open My Computer as soon as I opened any folder it crashed. I tried all of the above and more besides from other websites, after spending 24 hours over 3 days and nearly throwing my computer through the window I bit the bullet and Googled ntdll.dll as this seems to be causing all the problems, this led me to download and pay for Registry Mechanic. This fixed the problem in a few minutes. If you place any value on your time and sanity this is the route to take. Coppolizard

Forget the above, the fix only lasted about an hour and now I am back to square one and 30 dollars poorer. Help before I go mad.
