Windows Explorer Crashes
Sometime following installation of Win 7 I noticed that at each startup of the system, Explorer would stop responding and the a message would appear saying that the system was looking for a solution and then it would restart. This is happening on my primary work station and on my laptop and has been occurring for at least the past 2 maybe 3 months. Today, it has started to crash and restart when I am using Explorer to find files, surprisingly when I click on Desktop. I have one other machine with Win 7 on it in the office and it is not having this problem. Is there any resolution to this?? Charles

Hi Charles, please download this reg file from my SkyDrive: http://cid-128fc518635be2dc.skydrive.live.com/self.aspx/.Public/MS%20Foren/Registry/WER%5E_Explorer.reg and make a double click on the file to import it. When the explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service creates a dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Please upload the file to your public Skydrive folder and post the link here. I take at the dump, maybe I can see the cause. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Andre: Hate to sound so out of it, but what happens after I download your file. Right now, I just have it sitting on the desktop. Charles

Hi Charles, this files configures the Windows Error Reporting service to generate a MiniDump of the explorer and saves it to C:\localdumps. If the file is now on your desktop, make a double click on it to import the settings and wait for the next crash. After the crash, you can find a explorer.<Number>.exe.dmp file under C:\Localdumps. Upload this file please. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

"Cannot import C:\User\CRF Desktop\WER_Explorer.reg: Error accessing the registry." Hi, do you have admin rights on your machine? Is UAC on? André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi: I changed from a standard user to an administrator and it still does it. Charles

Hi, start regedit.exe and go to the following key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps and create a new key with the name explorer.exe and create a new string with the type REG_EXPAND_SZ and name it DumpFolder. Enter a valid path into the string Dumpfolder. When the explorer crashes, Windows Error Reporting Service creates a dmp file in the folder which you entered under DumpFolder . Please upload the file to your public Skydrive folder and post the link here. André"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/
