Windows Easy Transfer Can't Open File
Hello. I recently decided to upgrade my Windows 7 Beta to the Release Candidate. Before doing so, I used the Windows Easy Transfer program to back up my data on a seperate partition on my hard drive (XP Partition). I then proceeded to format my Windows 7 partition and install the RC. After getting everything installed, I tried to use the Easy Transfer program to get all my files and settings back, but the program refuses to open the file(s). I set everything back to the way it was on my Beta system (same system locale, etc), but to no avail. I even tried using the MigRecover program, which does recognize the files in Command Prompt, but has an error creating the destination file. Please help. Thank you.

exs120, It is sadly not very well publicized that you need to use the version of Easy Transfer included in the Windows 7 DVD, run from within whichever older OS you're trying to back up data from, in order for Windows 7 to read the data correctly. This is due to improvements in the .mig file format.-Alex

So I would have to use the WET version on the Win 7 BETA DVD, correct? Unfortunately, I am abroad and without access to the DVD for several months. Is there anyway to get the Win 7 Beta version of WET so I can try and recover my files without the DVD? Thank you.

exs120,No, the one on the RC DVD is the one you should use.

I did try the version of WET on the RC DVD (on a USB flash drive because I'm using a netbook), but it still did not work. Is there anyway to get the Win 7 Beta version of WET without the DVD to try and see if it works? Thanks.

I used the one on Win7 Beat to move to Win7 RC, and now I have lost some of my data. I did get alot from Windows.old, but not allI have a copy of MigRecover, which can open the file, but now complains it can't open the destination file.I am running a cmd window as Administrator, and can create files in the c:\migrecover\recover directory.I am doing this because the wizard can't open the file because I put a password on it. Even though I am sure I have put the correct password in, it won't open it. I then got migrecover to get past that. It can open the .MIG file, and reads all the files, but can't create them. Thanks,Jim

any updates, am in the same situation. This is frustrating. WIN 7 team should take a look, before the users lose loyalty.ThanksTilakTilak
