Windows Defender error messages since last update
I'm Running Windows Vista Premium SP1 Beta and since the last time that Microsoft Update updated Defender I have had a warning message displaying that Defender definitions need to be updated. I/ve tried at least a dozen times to update definitions but keep getting back that Defender is up to date with its definitions. In addition, my virus protection is also displaying the RED Shield Security Alert indicating that virus protection definitions need to be updated as well. I run Computer Associate's virus protection that is supposed to support Vista and it has done so and continues to do so. It automatically updates definitions multiple times a day since I get a message displayed on the bottom of my screen whenever it is updating definitions and it does so two or three times a day and yet Defender still shows a RED Shield and when I check it the indication is that I need to update virus definitions. The last update to Defender was KB915597 (definition 1.22.3405.0) on Oct 23,2007. The previous update to Defender was KB918897 (definition 1.22.3286.0) on Oct 20, 2007. It appears that definitions are updated anywhere from one to six days apart, looking at the previous dozen or so updates. So it does look like it has been a while since a new definition update has been applied but as I said, I have been manually trying to get it to update multiple times a day, both directly via Defender's Update button and also via MS Update, and it always comes back and says there are no updates and I am current. Since today is 11/7, it has been 15 days without an updated definition file. So something is definately wrong here but what?

Hi, This problem may occur if Windows Defender could not automatically update the definitions. I would like to suggest that we check the following: 1. Open Windows Defender. To do this, click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender. 2. Check for new definitions. To do this, follow these steps: a. Click Start, click Programs, and then click Windows Defender. b. Click the Help options arrow next to the Windows Defender Help icon, and then click Check for Updates. Notice that the notification balloon in the notification area states that Windows Defender is checking for definition updates. c. If Windows Defender reports a failure to update definitions, see the "More Information" section, and then follow the Windows Update troubleshooting information. For more information, please refer to: "Check for new definitions" warning after you install Windows Defender http://support.microsoft.com/kb/915105/en-us Also, Microsoft has set up a dedicate newsgroup forum to help answer your questions on Windows Defender. Newsgroups for Windows Defender: Learn and share information http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/newsgroups/default.mspx Hope it helps. Thanks.
