Windows Defender does not start
Windows Defender doesn`t start up at bootup. When I remember to check it it is always not running. It does start if I do it manually. When I went to start it tonight and update it manually it started to update ...then said it could not. When I looked at windows updates it had updated defender and everything seems fine. I think but not sure this started around the time I tried the new Avast 5 which is very buggy by the way. Had a few BSOD and now went back to Avast 4.8 which is working fine. I don`t know if this is related....but might be. Does anyone know how to fix this ?...........Peter

Hi, Here are some suggestions you can try: 1. Temporarily uninstall Avast 5 for a test. 2. Perform a Clean Boot to check the result. 3. Verify the Windows Defender service is started at startup. If not, please start it and set to Automatic. Thanks, Novak

Hi All, I have the same problem and do not have Avast. Seems this could be unrelated to Avast circumstance. I only run Microsoft Office and related software. Please advise, Larry

I have the same problem as well. It will not start manually and fails with error x800106ba which is not recognised on the Microsoft website. I only run Open Office, Live Mail and Essential Security. Terry

Just found the answer! Essential Security disables Defender. Terry
