Symptomatic of malware infection so start by scanning:http://www.elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_MalwareIf you can't do the work yourself (and there is no shame in admitting this isn't your cup of tea), take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local equivalent of BigComputerStore/GeekSquad). Please be aware that not all local shops are skilled at removing malware and even if they are, your computer may be so infested that Windows will need to be clean-installed. If possible, have all your data backed up before you take the machine into a shop.MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!

I think my system was infected by the 'Live Security Suite' rogue malware which tells you that you have viruses when you haven't - just so that you'll register & pay money over to them for what looks like a genuine Windows solution. This happened in early June when I inadvertantly opened an email from a friend on facebook (but her a/c had been hijacked). Obviously, I didn't sign up to anything & I was running AVC free edition @ the time which was itself compromised. I subsequently purchased & downloaded Spyware Doctor with AV which seemed to resolve the problem, but I was still left without a task manager. I've backed up all my data files onto CD and was wondering if I could solve the problem by running a System Restore to a point in time prior to June when the system was ok - what do you think?I've just run another scan with Spyware Doctor with AV & its clear - no infections or viruses.

I wouldn't. System Restore really works best when you're only going back a few days, a week at the most. I'm not fond of Spyware Doctor and I would do some other scanning per the link I already gave you, at least with MBAM.After you do that, if you still don't have Task Manager you can run the System File Checker: Start>Run>sfc /scannow [OK]MS-MVP - Elephant Boy Computers - Don't Panic!
