Windows Black on Startup
I was on my Asus laptop. Surfing the web, scanning for some viruses, listening to music. That's actually not that bad compared to what I have done before. Honestly. All of the sudden, BAM! Blue screen of death. And it seriously was this time. I went to start my computer up. I didn't even hear my FAN start. Just a black screen, no windows logo. Nothing. But I'm posting this on my laptop, in Asus Fastboot, so it's not a hardware problem. In Fastboot there is the option to start your OS normally. The Fastboot button is right next to the normal start button, so I hit it occasionally... so I know it's there normally. But after the blue screen, and the lack of loading, the OS button is just gone, like I don't have windows to begin with. Is there anything I can do other than reload windows? I have a lot of files on my laptop that, if possible, I would love to not lose.

As an added bonus... more information... It says I have all of my music, but when I go to play them, I have no sound, and it also says I have all of my folders, but no files inside.

1: Can you boot into the bios page? 2: If you have access to a desktop, remove hard drive from laptop & connect via adaptor - if drive seen, back up your files. 3: reinstall drive into laptop & attempt repair via installation/recovery disk. 4: If no joy with 1, back up that hard drive 1st. I have 2 laptops here with exactly the same problem & on checking with manufacturer, find that there was a design fault with those particular models in that if the laptop gets too hot, the gpu chip as come away from the motherboard. As they are HP laptops, & yours being an Asus, it's possible that the gpu has died.

Hi, Based on my research, please try the following: 1. Check if you can boot into Safe Mode. 2. Check if Startup Repair can help you to boot up your system. 3. Run system restore from System Recovery Options. 4. Run Memory Diagnostics Tool from System Recovery Options. 5. Run command chkdsk /f from command prompt. In addition, if possible please let us know the BSOD bug code and upload the small memory dump file to SkyDrive for further research. Hope this helps. Jeremy Wu TechNet Community Support
