Windows Backup Freezes
Hello MS Tech Net. Recently I've ran into a problem with the Backup & Restore feature on Windows 7(Home Premium). The automated backup service will run on it's scheduled time but then freeze around 10%. When it freezes I am unable to launch any new program or close any open program. Programs that are already running will continue to work without any problems. I can not CTRL+ALT+DEL and no matter how long I let the backup continue to run it never gets passed 10%. The backup is configured to save to my secondary internal hard drive which has no errors. The only way to get my system back is to reset the PC which is not good. I've disabled the task for now but I really liked the feature. My Event Viewer shows no error message at all regarding the backup. I've ran chkdsk and it came back clean as well. Suggestions?

More info please. Has the backups completed successfully before? If so when did the error first appeared? Do you have any restore points that you could restore to prior to the error you're having? Has any new programs been installed just prior to the error. What are you backing it up to? Is that device full? (not enough room to store the backup)MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

It's a fairly new PC. 2 weeks old or so. Prior to doing anything the backup did work. The drive is not full it has 250+ GB free. Because it's a new PC and I installed a lot right away it's hard to say if anything was installed just prior to the problem.

So are you trying to back up to a destination on your local C Drive? If so, that isn't going to work. Have you partitioned your drive? Whats the details of your backup location? Another thought, do you by chance having it backup to your DVD drive? That could explain too why it gets to 10% and stops. I've never tried writing to my DVD so I'm not sure if it prompts for another blank dvd or not.

I'm trying to backup my local drive C to a secondary internal drive(data drive) J: neither are partitioned. Why wouldn't this work?

Hi Resdiual,Thanks for trying out Windows Backup. According to the scenario you explained, backup should work properly. Please sendthe following details to help debug the issue:1. Logs situated at <Systemdrive>\Windows\Logs\WindowsBackup. Zip this folder and send across.2. Go to diskmgmt.msc. Take a screenshot of the disks available on your system.3. Options selected for backup. (Windows recommended or Let me choose)I will take a look at all these details and then will get back to you about what could the issue be?Thanks,Neha[MSFT]

Thanks Nehaa but I figured it out. I was selecting let me choose and my library was checked. My external hard drive has loads and loads of videos 200GB+(I'm an editor) and for some reason because they were in my library it was trying to back them all up. Still doesn't explain why it froze but it works fine now without that option selected.

Windows backup didn't know that the library was referencing your backup drive (where your videos were stored), as soon as it tried to backup parts of your external drive, it can't write to it if its collecting data from it (at least that's my theory). I could be wrong.MCSE, MCSA, MCDST

I have the same problem on an HP HDX running 64 bit Windows 7. Did all the things that are flying around on the "social" net and none have worked. Machine hangs at 25% when asked to install a blank media. I am backing up parts of the c drive to the dvd
drive, so there shouldn't be any "I'm reading so I can't write " going on.
