Windows Backup-Not enough space
I recently did a complete reinstall and wanted to try out the Windows Backup. I've never touched it before, always just backed up manually. I have a 640gb external that I wanted to use. My desktop has a 1tb drive partitioned into 500/50/450gb drives. The 50 and 450 are empty place holders in case I ever want to play with dual booting or anything. The 500gb partition has about 300gb on it. The external has a 70gb image of another system. I set up the backup and let it run over night, but when I came back in the morning then it was reporting that it didnt have enough space to continue, even though the drive had some 300 of backup files and about 400 still free. The backup file was actually larger than the used space on my computer. I suspect it is because I had started and stopped the backup a few times manually. I figured that it would be smart enough to do everything incrementally from where it left of last time. 300gb over usb is going to take a very long time, so I was trying to catch it in small bursts when I could fit it in until I left it overnight to finish. Was I correct in assuming it would resume the backup or does it really start from scratch each time you do a manual backup?

Hi,What is the exact error message?Try converting the destination disk (disk you're backing up TO) from Basic to Dynamic:1. Click the Windows button2. Right click on Computer and select Manage3. Click on Disk Management in the left pane4. Select and then right click on the Disk you want to convert5. Select "Convert to Dynamic Disk"6. Use defaults through wizardMeanwhile, disable all the security application like your antivirus software. If you do not know how to disable them completely, you can boot into clean boot and then try to do a complete back up again. In addition, delete the previous backups to free up as much space as you can.Clean Boot =============This method will disable loading program or service from start up to avoid conflict 1. Click "Start",and type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility. 2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray). 3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK". 4. Click "OK" to restart your computer to Selective Startup environment. 5. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.6. Check whether or not the issue still appears in this environment.

I also trie to backup on F HDD but same problem. Thanks for your help. It was just as I suspected. It restarts everything instead of resuming. It is also very very slow, so its almost useless for large drives. I think I'm going to go back to just manually copying everything, I have no need of compression.
