I have upgraded an old network with many Windows 98 workstations, to Windows 7.The print server was on a Windows XP machine, now that it has been replaced with a Windows 7 machine, The machines with Windows 98 cannot access the shares or the printers.I have put passwords onto the windows 98 machines and created accounts withthose username:passwords on the windows 7 machine. I haveset the win7 to "Send LM & NTLM responses". Still I can't access printers or shares.Each time I get this dialog box.You must supply a password to make this connection.Resource: \\computername\IPC$Password: In the past I have always fixed this error by putting passwords onto the offending machines.This was great for XP but I cannot find a way to connect my 98 machines to the Windows 7 machines.Thankyou for any help you can provideLashLash ComputingDarwin, Australia

OK I been searching the net for what I think is outlined here. The details here are scant. Could you expand it please starting with a Win'98 and XP peer to peer network. The '98 and XP are fine. Simple share to everyone no passwords. Now the Windows 7 is introduced. There is no difficulty having the XP and the Windows 7 sharing files and printer. Now we ignore the XP machines. The Windows 7 can get to the shares on the Win'98 but the Win'98 can't access shares on the Windows 7 even though it can be seen in network neighborhood. "\\computername is not accessible. This request is not supported by the network." Is the starting point to start the LM and NTLM response services somewhere as Lash seems to? What machine/s? How? I need more on the registry edit the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel” does not exist in my registry. Both registries in their edit menu do not use the "Add Value" as two linked articles in the above answer say. Edit/New has Key,String Value, Binary Value and DWORD Value. I will now try the Win'98 edit having found the articles below and backup the registry. It did not look right, so I deleted my attempts. Think I will wait for better instructions. Hi, I wonder if some one can please help me. I have a similar problem, but I am using MS virtual pc on windows 7 to run windows 98. I get the some problem, asking for a password. XP to 7 seems to work fine, with the same settings 98 does not have access. I have read not just the above posts, but others on other forums and it has been suggested to change the LMCompatibilityLevel to 1. The problem I have is this file seems to be missing. I looked both on my desktop pc and notebook, I can not find this file in order to change the value, is it hidden. I have followed the path carefully many times, and did a search, but it does not appear to be where it should be. Any advice please. Kind regards

I tried all this and gave up in the end, as Windows 7 would not share printers with W98. My solution was to buy and install a network printer running on Ethernet, it would have worked with wifi also, but I don't like wifi being on all the time. My problem was not file sharing, as my W98 is a virtual pc running inside W7, so I can drag and drop files. Using a Virtual PC may well be a solution to share files, as the W98 PC is visible and can be accessed by other machine, whilst W7 can not be accessed, so a shared folder in W98 VPC may help some people, of course it could be any OS. Now I can access the printer from any machine, W98, XP, W7. I bought an Epson SX515W, I have to say I did not like the instructions that came with it, and it took a factory reset to get it to appear on the router, but it does work very well. I paid £80, but if you are not rushed I think Amazon have it for £55

One still have to enter a Win 7 share address to open it from Win 98, since a Win 7 PC can't be open by clicking on it in Win 98 Network Neighborhood. Also, adding a local printer in Win 7 and then changing its port to Win 98's printer address allows to share a Win 98 printer from Win 7. However, reversed most needed scenario doesn't work, no matter what you do: a USB printer connected to Win 7 remains "Offline" after you add it in Win 98. Any suggestions? And the OP starter was asking namely about printer sharing, not just folders.

I dont beleive you will be able to share w7 printer with W98. I tried for ages, but did not work. MS would need to do something about it, I doubt they will. I treid a usb to ethernet adaper, the one I had said it would only work with single use device, IE printer only, not scanner, so in the end I got an Ethernet printer. Maybe one day there will be a way, I read loads of posts with people having problems and did not find one where the printer was being shaired with W98. The aamount of time lost is not worth the cost when compared to buying either a wifi or ethernet printer, going to a router. I would think almost everyone has one of these today due to broadband use being shared with the family.

Some smaller companies & home offices still have to use some specific peaces of software that run only in Win98. Many Win98 PCs are still in use around the world. Not everyone has extra cash to buy network printer, when having a brand new USB printer - that's absurd! I don't think MS should just abandon this problem. There are a lot of people still working for MS, who developed Win98 networking and sharing features. I don't believe, no MS Guru can tackle this issue or interested to help, since what else this forum for?
