I run auto updates on all my Windows 8 and 8.1 devices. The KB2267602 keeps appearing for update despite successfully installing each time. I do not get error messages and there are no apparent issues other than the fact that I see it regularly as an important update to download and install.

Sounds like something is preventing a module change?   WindowsUpdate.log may show you if it is one in particular.  Then you could focus on what happens to it, e.g. using ProcMon or auditing.  This is also something that MBSA used to help with but I haven't used it in a long time to know if that is still the case.

KB2267602 is a Defender update. Use the offline updater:

Some of the suggestions given were diagnostics.  Diagnostics only help refine a symptom description, so if you don't even give us your interpretation of them, no one can help you on that tack.

I have followed the suggestion of the direct update on 3 occasions with 3 reboots but the problem won't go away. Every day that I install a Defender update then every day I get a message that Defender needs an update.

Since most users leave the updates on automatic they have no idea that anything is wrong. This problem is not just among a few users, so why hasn't Microsoft resolved it?

KB2267602 is the name given to EVERY Windows Defender definition update.

KB2267602 will usually appear at least once a day (every time Microsoft updates the antivirus definitions)

If you go into your update history you will see KB2267602 listed multiple times but the part that you want to pay attention to is where it says (Definition .....) which is the actual file that is installing.

This isn't a Microsoft problem or a computer problem.

Think of it this way:

You have software folders on your computer which hold all the files for a program.  When the program updates the folder's name doesn't change just the files inside it.

In this case KB2267602 would be considered the folder and where it says (Definition X.XXX.XXX.X) would be the program update.

I'm on the Windows 10 Technical Preview (build 10041) and I manually check for updates throughout the day, several times per day.  Most of the time, when I check, there is a new defender update, and the KB number on it does not change.  However, I do notice that the definition version changes each time it downloads and installs the update.  For example, yesterday, I got four Defender updates under KB2267602, but the Definition versions were as follows:

Definition 1.195.109.0

Definition 1.195.129.0

Definition 1.195.136.0

Definition 1.195.154.0

It appears that Microsoft is constantly updating their definition files, and I like that.  I can only assume it means that whenever you want to, you can check for newer definitions (instead of once a day) and potentially be on the bleeding edge of malware and virus protection as new updates get posted several times throughout the day.
