Windows 8 forgets speaker configuration from Speaker Setup...

Hello.

Since I upgraded to Windows 8, I've discovered my system resets my speaker configuration to Stereo rather than 5.1, seemingly at random. I have a Creative X-Fi card and in Windows XP and 7, speaker configuration was always able to be modified within their Volume Panel app. In Windows 8, however, I have to use the Windows Speaker Setup configuration box to change to 5.1.. so I figure Windows 8 is managing the amount of speakers now. It seems to be doing a terrible job at it, though.

What could be causing it to forget the setting? My sound card software is not forgetting any of my sound cards settings in the volume panel, but Windows keeps forgetting the number of speakers. What is Windows doing different than it used to?  Can this be stopped? It's a pain  to have to check and change the setting every time I go to watch a movie or do something with audio. :P

Hi,

Based on your description, I assume the issue should be caused by the driver of sound card. Please make sure it is fully compatible with Windows 8. If there is any updated version, please try it and test again.

I have the same problem after upgrade from win 7 Home Prem. 64bits to win 8 pro...
Windows reset speakers config to 2.0/2.1 every boot. I've tried to setup the speakers from creative painel and windows it self, but no use, every reset the speakers change to 2.0/2.1, creative has a beta a also a fresh new drive, both have the same problem.. it seems more like a windows problem, since speakers config are handled and stored by windows.
I guess microsoft programers does not like surround sound :P

I removed all the Creative software, ran Driver Cleaner Pro, and rebooted.

Then I installed X-Fi Support Pack 2.5 (haven't tried the newer Auzen Pack) and after that, the latest X-Fi drivers from Creative's site.

Not only did the speaker settings save (and my surround sound decoding is back), but the Volume Panel icon is back in the System Tray after all these years.

Juke,

I have the same problem.  I have Windows 8.1, Dell XPS 8700 with built in Realtek HD audio.  I use the Windows 8.1 Sound control panel and configure the speakers to be quadraphonic.  This works fine until either 1) I reboot or 2) plug in a new USB device (e.g. a thumb drive) and then the speaker configuration reverts back to the default stereo setting.  The driver is from Microsoft date 8/22/2013, version 6.3.9600.16384.  Searching for newer drivers it says this is the most up to date driver.

Thanks,

Mark Miller
