Windows 8 client Hyper-V

Is there a (supported or at least possible) way to configure a user such that at login Windows starts the VM Remote Desktop client so the user is connected to a specific VM immediately? Ideally the user should not be able to do anything else on the machine.

You want XenClient (which now supports using Client Hyper-V).

The only way to do this with MSFT is to use RDP direct to the VM and some logon / startup scripting.

Hi,

I thought XenClient was a client hypervisor. I was curious whether client Hyper-V could be used as an alternative to XenClient.

XenClient is more than just a client hypervisor.  It is a VM based containerization system on a client device - the model is focused on security.

Where the end consumer does not have management access of the VMs, nor access to the management OS.  They can use the VMs that are delivered and attach peripherals, but they are not administrators outside of the VM operating systems.

Couple that with a management layer to maintain, update, and manage images.

Client Hyper-V is a hypervisor that the end consumer has full control over.  And full access to the management OS.  A general use hypervisor if you like, where XenClient is a locked down environment built on a hypervisor.

The use cases / focus for the two is actually very different though they may appear to be similar in technology.  They are both called a 'client hypervisor' - and quite honestly, neither really are.  They are both datacenter hypervisors that run on client devices.

You could do a number of modifications of the management OS and logon scripts to cause Windows Client with Hyper-V to act like the XenClient locked down environment.  But quite a bit of effort would need to be put into it.  None of the management framework is there.

Client Hyper-V was added for developers.  That was its primary purpose.  And the Windows Phone emulator requires it.
