Windows 8 asks for network password to access NAS device

I have had this problem since buying a laptop loaded with Windows 8.

I have ahome network using two Gigabit ethernet switches and a gigabit router.

on the wired part of the network are three desktop PCs [all running Windows 7 Professional] and two laptops [one running Win 7 Pro and one running Win 8], plus a Synology DS211j NAS device.

I can see the NAS device from every computer.

However, I can only access the device from Windows 7 machines.

With the Win 8 laptop [my preferred laptop as it is newer and faster] I can see the NAS device in an explorer window, but when I try to access it I get a security dialogue asking for a network password.

To my knowledge, i have never set a network password.

I have tried every password I know - the password for the NAS, the password for the laptop, and even the passwords for the other PCs. All to no avail. The dialogue box rejects them, as well as leaving it blank.

I have also tried the solutions proposed in my previous post about this last year. Unfortunately, none of these have worked.

Can anybody offer a simple explanation of what might be going on, and a solution?

Verify that the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper service is running.

Start --> Run type services.MSC and press Enter.

try login with or without Microsoft account

or login using this login:

user name : root

password: your admin password

or try to connected it trough LAN cable using Synology Assistant

Please also report at Synology forum, so we can double check from both side, since many issue Windows 8/8.1 with NAS still not solved. Please reply with the result

Hi

Thanks for this.

I have also raised this on the Synology Forum. I think I have found the answer.

I tried connecting over both wired and wireless connections.

The security/error message seemed to be referring to my laptop as on a domain, not a workgroup. However, I have never set up a domain.

I decided to try logging in using a different account/credentials, as the secirity dialogue offered this option. This hadn't worked before, but I used my NAS username and password for this and suddenly I was connected.

I'd ticked "remember my credentials" so when I went back this morning, connections to both my Synology NAS devices worked fine.

I still don't understand the whys and wherefores - particularly why the Windows security message refers to a domain - but the important thing is I can now access both devices from this [cursed] Windows 8 OS!!

I really don't understand why managing this simple network with 3 PCs, two laptops and a couple of NAS devices and only one user [me],which was relatively easy under Windows 7, now seems inordinately complicated under Windows 8.
