Windows 8 and NumLock on Lockscreen

Hi there,

I have a really annoying problem on all of my Win8 laptops.

Whenever fast startup is enabled, NumLock on the Keyboard is disabled on the Lockscreen. When I turn off fast startup or do a reboot everything works fine.

This scenario is reproducible and definitely related to the fast startup setting.

The InitialKeyboardIndicators Key is set up correctly.

As you can log on to Win8 with a PIN this is even more annoying.

Is there any other fix for this available then disabling fast startup?

Thanks a lot!

Where did you make that registry change InitialKeyboardIndicators ?  I noticed there are a few paths that modification can go.  Also have you checked your laptops bios to verify its NumLock settings?

I tried this:

To enable NUM LOCK before a user logs on, follow these steps:
  1. Run Registry Editor.
  2. Move to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard .
  3. Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators from 0 to 2.

as described in: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/154529/en-us

And I tried:

[HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard]

"InitialKeyboardIndicators"="2147483650"

Both settings works fine when fast startup is disabled or I do a reboot, but not when fast startup is enabled it does not!

Unfortunately I dont have such a setting in the BIOS.

It seems by design that NumLock is disable when fast startup is enabled. I will forward this information to Microsoft Development Department.
