Windows 8 Pro VPN Connection problem - No network access

I'm trying to connect to my Office network via VPN. It works fine with my Windows XP pc.<o:p></o:p>

But from Windows 8 PRO, I get no network access for both IPv4 and IPv6. I am able to establish the connection and getting an IP address etc, but, I am unable to connect to any of the servers or ping any of IP address.<o:p></o:p>

I have verified all the connection parameters in Xp en Win8: they are identical.<o:p></o:p>

Also the "IPconfig /all"  and the "print route"-list are almost identical.<o:p></o:p>

But when I ping to any IP address, even the gateway of the VPN-connection (route table), i get a time out.<o:p></o:p>

The only thing I can ping is the IP-address i received from the DHCP.<o:p></o:p>

I have Norton internet security 2012 installed. I have already disabled it, uninstalled it en even disabled the windows firewall afterwards.
Without any success.<o:p></o:p>

Has anybody an idee what I can try next?<o:p></o:p>

Thanks,<o:p></o:p>

Dominique<o:p></o:p>

PS Colleagues have no problem with Windows 8

November 10th, 2012 1:26pm

I have the same problem. My vpn is PPTP and is configured on Windows 2008 R2 server. I have tried many solutions from internet, like setting another static route, disabling or enabling default gateway checkbox in ipv4 and ipv6, changing metric value.

The same configuration is working with no problems on Windows Vista and 7 on the same user. I thougth i made it, and my vpn connection started working but after restart problem came back. Yesterday I had Windows 7 but upgraded to 8. On Windows 7 this connection worked until upgrade. THe same problem is on fresh installed Windows 8. I have NOD32 Smart Security but I uninstalled it. My PPTP server serves IP addresses itself, without DHCP.

Please help.

Hi,

comming from here, where are started same problem thread - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itpronetworking/thread/a9926bda-d56a-4262-9340-bd9eb0acb961

Same problem here, it is not only PPTP, its also L2TP over IPSec

Hello everybody, please for little help here. VPN server: Im using L2TP over IPSec VPN for remote clients to connect ot my network, this VPN server is on main router (not on windows platform). Its mikroTik if anybody cares :) However Windows 7: work correctly, can establish connection, can reach remote resources, can ping all the remote resources. use default gateway on or off, doesnt matter, both works... Windows 8: Win8 Pro x64 upgarde from Win7 Pro x64, connected to domain. VPN connection can be established, BUT im not able to reach remote network, cannot ping any remote resource. Tryed every possible scenario, turned on or off "use default gateway" doesnt change anything. If I look to routes than everything seems to be ok. Tryed to deleto routes manualy and add new, but without any change :/

FYI: I have tryed to disable all firewals, and everything, that can block VPN comunication

Is there some tweak I have to use in windows 8 to VPN start working? thank you for any help

OH FINALY, its seems to be working, but its bug of windows 8.

My little big investigation results

Windows 7 with 3rd party firewall works ok

Windows 8 with 3rd party firewall dont work, same settings as windows 7 machine

How can it be ?

If u using some security software, like me (GFI Vipre Business Premium) or like "pabloroz" (NOD 32 cybersecurity or endpoint security) than it is included with firewall function. If you try to disable it (firewall), you still arent able to reach remote network, I also tryed to make exceptions for remote networks, without succes.

I have to uninstal Premium version and install basic version which doesnt have firewall and web filter protection. Now its ok, and VPN is working.

So where is the problem with 3rd party firewall ? What is the diferrence betwen windows 7 and 8?

The same problem, W8 x64, no 3rd party AV FW used.(I had KIS-uninstalled) When I disabled firewall, VPN problem persists.

My solution: I installed virtualbox and XP, there I have no problem. My W8 is only a supervisor for XP, where I can use MS VPN (and Cisco VPN, Cisco client has problems too).

Microsoft, be so kind and please repair this bugs, thank you :).

Hi all

I had the same problem have a look at the post I made on the SpiceWorks site.

http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/281233-windows-8-vpn-connection-stops-internet-access-remote-desktop-and-mapped-drives?page=1#entry-1826231

Credit to GoofyGeek for getting my connection restored.  I did a few things in addition to his advice however when I tried to recreate the problem by going to a restored period I could not as I still got connected.  I only noticed a delay in the bottom right going from my connection with internet access to an exclamation mark then to my remote connection with internet access.

Hope my rambling helps.

Leroy

Sorry I cannot be any more help.  My Windows 8 x64 has also been upgraded from Windows 7 x64.  I noticed my issues seemed to start at the same time I installed a digital Cert which failed to complete the first time round but was successful the second time.  First time it was in IE but did not appear in outlook 2007.  Once I discovered the VPN issue I exported it to a folder and then deleted it from IE.  That's when I went through all the previous steps to get the VPN to work with internet access.

My issue was the fact that I could VPN but could not access the Remote Desktop or a mapped drive.  Your error seems to be no VPN connection.

In addition I did go through my registry and remove all mention of any previous Virus scanners Avast, AVG and McaFee.  I still use Avast but I wanted to remove everything and stick with Windows Firewall as a base to move forward.

Searching around for Windows 8 and VPN dropped connection problems, this seems to be the only thread on the subject. I've got a single user dual boot Win 8 Pro/Win 7 Home Premium set up, both x64 and getting internet through direct cable connection.  , I've found that while OpenVPN holds a connection indefinitely with Win 7, it consistently loses it after one to three hours with Windows 8.  The VPN provider is PrivateInternetAccess and I've been connecting to the same server with each OS.  I start the OpenVPN GUI app from the desktop.  I use Comodo Firewall and have also tested with Windows Firewall in Win 8, with the VPN executable excepted in each.  At PIA's suggestion, I tried giving the OpenVPN app administrator rights, but that didn't do it. The Win 7 user account is Administrator, while Win 8 is Local/Administrator, so they are not exactly equal, if that matters - and it doesn't seem to, if I've gotten the jist of this thread.

When searching for help with my favorite searching machine I always find this blog entry. It is marked as "answered" (OK there are anwers) - but this should not be marked as "solved", I think.

I have the same problems and I think the reason lies in one of the updates I go after Dec. 14, 2012. This is the last date my Outlook was synced successfully with the server.

I have VPN connection problems to my company network from my home network with windows 7 and windows 8. Windows XP ist still working. My windows 8 (I updated a windows 7 machine with windows 8 pro early in december and everythink worked fine in the beginning. I could connect to the remote network via windows vpn, access the file system on the server, sync my outlook with exchange server. This changed about 10 days ago.

When finding no solution I tried to connect with a windows 7 machine (which also always connected before) - same problem. Now - yesterday - I was glad to find out that on the server everything seems to be still OK because an even older windows XP laptop that always connected before is still connecting now.

For the moment I decided to use my windows XP machine to do my work online and to sync my outlook and not to change too many parameters on my windows 7 and on my windows 8 machines. It worked - and it suddenly did not work without changes. So I hope one of the next updates will make it work again - also without changes.

Congratulations. You are in luck. Not only Avast but also Kaspersky (confirmed) AV can do it.

I never use third party AV on my istallation (my tip not confirmed is that IP protocol on my computer could be modified with "Lenovo system update" or "Microsoft Network Monitor").  But uninstallation and registry clean helped not.

I think that we need serious repair of IP protocol from Microsoft. Seems that Microsoft gave not enough information about his new IP protocol implemtation in Windows 8 to others.  The problem is very serious and since October (or Summer 2012- the problem was in Pre Release too) is clearly no will to help wit it.

There is no serious Microsoft KB paper about it, no Fix It how it was early for XPs, W7..

have you tried the restore defaults in windows firewall?

sorry, but seems to me that you are thinking that I must be a i***t :(

tried, and without firewall, and finally completely reinstall Windows  .... and wrote to a six or  more threads with thousands accesses everywhere (not only microsoft ) where a lot of similar recommedations  were. And every day I am checking this threads and searching internet and hopeless Windows updates for some solution since October.

I have the same problem like many others. i have Windows 8 and im using Windows defender and build in firewall.

VPN was working in the beginning, i could access Network shares, ping, and browse the internet. Then it stopped  working, have been looking for at way to fix it for a while, and have been trying differents thing.

This worked for me, though i dont know why it worked:

Computer management/services:

Manual stop:

Secure socket tunneling protocol

Internet connection sharing

Remote access connection manager

Network access protection agent

afther i stoped this it worked, even after restarting the pc with the services running Again.

hope this helps.

It works for me:

  1. Run Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall.
  2. Click Advanced settings on the left.
  3. Choose Inbound Rules.
  4. On the right click New Rule....
  5. Select Predefined, choose Routing and Remote Access, and click Next.
  6. Check all three rules, and click Next.
  7. Choose Allow the connection, and click Finish.
  8. Than repeat actions for Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (in Inbound Rules).
  9. Than repeat actions for Routing and Remote Access (in Outbound Rules).
  10. Restart computer, and VPN connection.

Good luck guys!

So I found a possible fix for people using Kaspersky Antivirus. My company is thinking about moving to Windows 8 machines and I've been tasked to putting together the migration path. We have hit a snag with Windows 8 and Cisco VPN client (5.0.07.0440 and 5.0.07.0410) and Kaspersky Endpoint 10 (10.1.0.867). The VPN client would connect but I am not able to hit any of our servers on the VPN network. I tried many of the prescribed solutions from adding exclusions to the Kaspersky firewall etc. The only way I was able to get the VPN to finally work correctly was to not have the Kaspersky NDIS filter 6.0 from starting up. This requires a registry change. Below are the steps:

1. In Kaspersky, you must first disable Self-Defense

2. Go to your registry by typing regedit in the run menu

3. Navigate to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\klwfp (note: for older Kaspersky versions it might be kltdi instead of klwfp)

4. There will be a key called "Start" and should have a default of "1". Change that to "4"

5. Enable Self-Defense again and restart

6. Once restarted when you connect via the VPN, you should be working again.

Hope this helps out people. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email:

Thanks,

Phillip

Hello.

Windows 8 pro 32bit. has no 3rd party firewall or antivirus, only microsoft firewall and defender.

try to connect with L2TP connection to work VPN server (PSK or cert) - has error 809. connect with IKEv2 - all work fine. My home ISP get me Internet from L2TP connection (no PSK, no cert). maybe its a problem with double L2TP? But L2TP & IKEv2 use the IPSec protocol, so why IKEv2 work? and L2TP not?

upd: install virtualbox on my PC. create new VM, settings-network-NAT, install Win8 Pro 32bit system. create L2TP connection (PSK & cert) to job - its work! Why? :)

upd2: reinstall OS, install all updates. install soft, which was on previous OS installation. L2TP connection work fine.

It worked just once. Since then I cannot reach remote folders although connection established. (Limited)

So the result is the same as before.

having setup Shrew VPN and have it work fine on Win 8 returning from Xmas I was greeted with a laptop that the Shrewsoft VPN had 'stopped working' with the message 'no internet access' after windows update to 8.1, uninstalled Shrewsoft as suggested (uninstall reports errors as suggested but just continue) rebooted, installed latest version 2.2.2 works fine. nice one Loza

But there were still problems, even though the tunnel appeared to be up, no connection was possible to the server (with outlook or explorer) and the solution:

With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

et voila all working fine

thanks Microsoft for breaking things yet again!

I was having very similar problems with Windows 8 Pro and here is what I figured out:

1. Create your incoming vpn connection on the server ( http://www.howtogeek.com/135996/how-to-create-a-vpn-server-on-your-windows-computer-without-installing-any-software/ ).  First I ran into a 720 error, and here was my fix.  To start, I disabled TCP/IP v6 on client and server.  In TCP/IP v4 settings, you need to set up a block of at least 2 ip addresses (one for the server and one for the client), use ones outside of your dhcp pool.  On the client, specify using a specific IP address, (I used the second of the two) in the block.  Now you should be able to connect without a 720 error.  This gave me access to machines on my network except the server itself (which is the one I wanted to connect to!)

2. Then I figured out that the incoming connection was considered a "Public" connection and so was subject to the firewall.  Go to gpedit.msc->Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Network List Manager Policies->RAS (Dial In) Interface->Network Location.  Change it to Private.  This disables the firewall (I am using Windows Defender, but should probably apply to others), now you can access the server itself (e.g. via RDP) from its regular IP address on your remote network (not the one in the block you specified earlier).

3. So, this gives you full access to your remote LAN, but I still haven't figured out how to get access to the remote gateway and use my remote internet connection for web requests.  Default Gateway is blank on my client and I see no place it can be set.  That being said I just wanted to RDP primarily so I am okay here.  Maybe there is a solution with Internet Connection Sharing.

Hi, will this work for OpenVPN, too?
April 6th, 2014 7:31am

Hi all,

based on my experience, try to uninstall any 3rd party VPN client (like SonicWALL Global or Cisco) one by one to identify which is possibly causing a no limited access.

Also make sure that Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) service in Windows services is STOPPED.

Hope it helps!

I've had this exact same problem for a few months and after turning off the firewall in Bit Defender, the internet and VPN now work to full functionality.

I had found this thread very useful, thank you.

For a long time I have been servicing PC's remotely and I'm used to join PCs to a domain using the Hamachi VPN Service to connect to a domain controller DNS service.

This has always worked liek a charm on win XP/7 but it had failed me on 8-10.

There was no connection to the DC DNS via the VPN, even tough I was 100% shure the service was listening (using the dig command from the windows distribution of BIND).

Alas, when I uninstalled the Avira Antivirus (which does not have a firewall component of its own) I could join a PC to the domain just like before.

So there's something here that works differently from Win7/XP. it is important to bear in mind that, and maybe test which Antivirus software are causing the DNS block on the VPN and which don't.

Luis
