Windows 8 Pro VPN Connection problem - No network access

I'm trying to connect to my Office network via VPN. It works fine with my Windows XP pc.<o:p></o:p>

But from Windows 8 PRO, I get no network access for both IPv4 and IPv6. I am able to establish the connection and getting an IP address etc, but, I am unable to connect to any of the servers or ping any of IP address.<o:p></o:p>

I have verified all the connection parameters in Xp en Win8: they are identical.<o:p></o:p>

Also the "IPconfig /all"  and the "print route"-list are almost identical.<o:p></o:p>

But when I ping to any IP address, even the gateway of the VPN-connection (route table), i get a time out.<o:p></o:p>

The only thing I can ping is the IP-address i received from the DHCP.<o:p></o:p>

I have Norton internet security 2012 installed. I have already disabled it, uninstalled it en even disabled the windows firewall afterwards.
Without any success.<o:p></o:p>

Has anybody an idee what I can try next?<o:p></o:p>

Thanks,<o:p></o:p>

Dominique<o:p></o:p>

PS Colleagues have no problem with Windows 8

Would you specify your VPN?

Disable item by item (than can be disabled) and exclude possible "drawbacks".

I have the same problem. My vpn is PPTP and is configured on Windows 2008 R2 server. I have tried many solutions from internet, like setting another static route, disabling or enabling default gateway checkbox in ipv4 and ipv6, changing metric value.

The same configuration is working with no problems on Windows Vista and 7 on the same user. I thougth i made it, and my vpn connection started working but after restart problem came back. Yesterday I had Windows 7 but upgraded to 8. On Windows 7 this connection worked until upgrade. THe same problem is on fresh installed Windows 8. I have NOD32 Smart Security but I uninstalled it. My PPTP server serves IP addresses itself, without DHCP.

Please help.

I would suggest that you check your firewall settings in Windows 8. I would disable all firewalls on all machines and see if the VPN works...Let me know the results.

Hi,

comming from here, where are started same problem thread - http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/w8itpronetworking/thread/a9926bda-d56a-4262-9340-bd9eb0acb961

Same problem here, it is not only PPTP, its also L2TP over IPSec

Hello everybody, please for little help here. VPN server: Im using L2TP over IPSec VPN for remote clients to connect ot my network, this VPN server is on main router (not on windows platform). Its mikroTik if anybody cares :) However Windows 7: work correctly, can establish connection, can reach remote resources, can ping all the remote resources. use default gateway on or off, doesnt matter, both works... Windows 8: Win8 Pro x64 upgarde from Win7 Pro x64, connected to domain. VPN connection can be established, BUT im not able to reach remote network, cannot ping any remote resource. Tryed every possible scenario, turned on or off "use default gateway" doesnt change anything. If I look to routes than everything seems to be ok. Tryed to deleto routes manualy and add new, but without any change :/

FYI: I have tryed to disable all firewals, and everything, that can block VPN comunication

Is there some tweak I have to use in windows 8 to VPN start working? thank you for any help

OH FINALY, its seems to be working, but its bug of windows 8.

My little big investigation results

Windows 7 with 3rd party firewall works ok

Windows 8 with 3rd party firewall dont work, same settings as windows 7 machine

How can it be ?

If u using some security software, like me (GFI Vipre Business Premium) or like "pabloroz" (NOD 32 cybersecurity or endpoint security) than it is included with firewall function. If you try to disable it (firewall), you still arent able to reach remote network, I also tryed to make exceptions for remote networks, without succes.

I have to uninstal Premium version and install basic version which doesnt have firewall and web filter protection. Now its ok, and VPN is working.

So where is the problem with 3rd party firewall ? What is the diferrence betwen windows 7 and 8?

November 15th, 2012 12:00pm

I can confirm this (I think so).

My connection worked when Win 8 was clean. Afterwards I installed all my Software and the latest version off Norton Internet Security.

After that, my VPN connection was dead.

However, I tried to uninstall Norton Internet Security, but it didn't make any difference. My VPN connection stays dead.

If there is a problem with Win 8 and all firewalls, I hope Mircosft can make a patch to correct this.

Win 8 VPN connections were working fine for me until this morning, and I have been working remotely on a daily basis for weeks.

Now I can connect VPN, but them have no access to remote resources.  The connection is PPTP.

Luckily for me I have a mac mini I picked up for testing and it is able to connect and RDP to my remote machine.

Maybe a bad Windows update?

November 18th, 2012 9:52pm

I have exactly the same problem

I have windows 2008 R2 Server with VPN I can connect to it from my windows 7 PC and browse internet without any issue. But from my Windows 8 pc it connect fine with VPN server but No network access / no internet.

is there any solution for this?

The same problem, W8 x64, no 3rd party AV FW used.(I had KIS-uninstalled) When I disabled firewall, VPN problem persists.

My solution: I installed virtualbox and XP, there I have no problem. My W8 is only a supervisor for XP, where I can use MS VPN (and Cisco VPN, Cisco client has problems too).

Microsoft, be so kind and please repair this bugs, thank you :).

Hello,

I have the same Problem. And even more sad is, that sometimes, without any changes, it is working. On my old Windows 7 machine I have no Problems.... And also some of my collegues have no Problems even on Windows 8...??? I have checked my Settings over and over for days, without success.

Kind regards, Markus

Hello Jiri, no, I only have Windows Firewall and Microsoft Defender.

Same on my side.  No outside security software.  I connect, but cannot ping.  From Windows 7 or my Mac it is fine.

Very frustrating.  It has really impacted my ability to work from home, and unfortunately I need to do that more than I want to admit.

I recently upgraded my home Windows 7 Ultimate workstation to Windows 8 Enterprise (from MSDN).

I am now unable to connect to my office VPN - get 619 error - port disconnected. This works from my work laptop (Win 7) but not my home PC. I've tried with the firewall turn off and get the same error.

It seems my error is very similar to those above.

The system event log shows this:

CoId={FF13AC6D-FC7B-4940-9E45-E4EBAFD45C}:The initial Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol request could not be successfully sent to the server. This can be due to network connectivity issues or certificate (trust) issues. The detailed error message is provided below. Correct the problem and try again.

A connection attempt failed because the connected party did not properly respond after a period of time or established connection failed because connected host has failed to respond.

I have the same problem with Windows 8 x64 Pro. VPN connection is established without errors. But no access to any of the resources is possible. Disabling firewall and/or Eset Smart Security makes no difference!

The same connection with the EXACT same settings is working fine with Windows 7 x64!

Great bug invented. Argh!

Hi all

I had the same problem have a look at the post I made on the SpiceWorks site.

http://community.spiceworks.com/topic/281233-windows-8-vpn-connection-stops-internet-access-remote-desktop-and-mapped-drives?page=1#entry-1826231

Credit to GoofyGeek for getting my connection restored.  I did a few things in addition to his advice however when I tried to recreate the problem by going to a restored period I could not as I still got connected.  I only noticed a delay in the bottom right going from my connection with internet access to an exclamation mark then to my remote connection with internet access.

Hope my rambling helps.

I have 2 PCs - 1 is Windows 7 64-bit and the other is Windows 8 64-bit - used to be Windows 7 64-bit.

The authentication is via a smartcard - ActiveIdentity ActiveClient x64.

The Windows 7 PC connects to the VPN fine - everytime.

When the upgraded Windows 8 PC was Windows 7 it connected fine - everytime.

The upgraded Windows 8 PC does not connect at all - gets a 619 error each time.  This occurs if the firewall is on or off.

If it is wrong "password" (or in this case certificate) then both PCs would fail to connect. The Windows 8 PC uniquely fails to connect.

Sorry I cannot be any more help.  My Windows 8 x64 has also been upgraded from Windows 7 x64.  I noticed my issues seemed to start at the same time I installed a digital Cert which failed to complete the first time round but was successful the second time.  First time it was in IE but did not appear in outlook 2007.  Once I discovered the VPN issue I exported it to a folder and then deleted it from IE.  That's when I went through all the previous steps to get the VPN to work with internet access.

My issue was the fact that I could VPN but could not access the Remote Desktop or a mapped drive.  Your error seems to be no VPN connection.

In addition I did go through my registry and remove all mention of any previous Virus scanners Avast, AVG and McaFee.  I still use Avast but I wanted to remove everything and stick with Windows Firewall as a base to move forward.

The idea that the problem is certificate-related does have merit. See below for (a) picture of the error message I see and (b) the System log error message. I know that the digital  certificate is itself OK however since my other PC (Win 7 64) connects using it.

So the cause must be how the Win 8 PC is handling the certificate using RAS connection setup. Using the ActivClient utility I can see the certificate properties and they're ok on both Win 7 and Win 8 computers.

Level=Error, Source=RasSstp, Event=1, Task Category=None

The certificate resides on a smartcard, or actually a ActiveKey USB stick.

RAS connection to the corp VPN is not possible without it.

However your comment did stimulate me to go into IE.Options.Content.Certificates and delete all other certificates and clear SSL state.

I still get the same problem, same sequence of error messages in the event log.

Maybe it is just the corp VPN server not accepting Win 8 RAS connections.

Since you have cleared the certs have you gone back and followed the previous step re clearing ARP Cache and resetting the firewall.  This is the sequence I went through.

Failing that I will see if I can set up a server for testing with just a standard VPN connection.

I tried clearing the ARP Cache and turning off the firewall but with no success. Still the same Problem. Sometimes it works sometimes not....

My solution: I use a Windows 7 installed in a Virtual Box to work with the VPN connection - because with Windows 7 it works perfectly...

I have a theory that malfunction is caused by previously installed antivirus or Microsoft Network Monitor  software (on my configuration was never any 3party AV or FW used).   IP protocol is modified in time sooner or later without any  notice... what causes it is un

Searching around for Windows 8 and VPN dropped connection problems, this seems to be the only thread on the subject. I've got a single user dual boot Win 8 Pro/Win 7 Home Premium set up, both x64 and getting internet through direct cable connection.  , I've found that while OpenVPN holds a connection indefinitely with Win 7, it consistently loses it after one to three hours with Windows 8.  The VPN provider is PrivateInternetAccess and I've been connecting to the same server with each OS.  I start the OpenVPN GUI app from the desktop.  I use Comodo Firewall and have also tested with Windows Firewall in Win 8, with the VPN executable excepted in each.  At PIA's suggestion, I tried giving the OpenVPN app administrator rights, but that didn't do it. The Win 7 user account is Administrator, while Win 8 is Local/Administrator, so they are not exactly equal, if that matters - and it doesn't seem to, if I've gotten the jist of this thread.

Hi,

I've been working on this problem for a while.

The first time i had these problems (VPN connection OK but can't ping or access any remote machine), i believed that it was a Windows 8 bug comparing to Windows 7. But after running a Windows 8 x64 VM (VMWare Workstation) on my Windows 8 x64 PC, and established that it was working on the VM and not on the host (same VPN, same settings), i had serious doubts.

After a deeper search, i realized that is was coming from a third party software (netlimiter which is a network bandwidth limiter software, not certified for Windows 8). After uninstalling this software and reboot (stopping services wasn't enough), the VPN connection worked again as usual. I guess now this software use a low level driver that was the cause of this problem.

Recently, i have installed Avast Internet Security 7 (which is windows 8 compliant !!), and same problem with VPN connections. Before installation, all was working very well (for 6/8 weeks on a daily usage), and after, VPN connection is OK but i can't ping or access any remote machine. The only IP i can ping is the DHCP address of my VPN local interface given by the remote router. Once again, i uninstalled Avast, reboot and the VPN has a normal behaviour. Avast Internet Security brings a third party firewall and packet monitor, and i believe this piece of software is using a low level driver too. Stopping all the agents and even the windows services had no effect. Only software uninstall solves the problem.

In a Windows 7 x64 VM, i have none of these problems with the same manipulations. So i believe that Windows 8 brings network low level evolutions which are not corredctly handled by third party software.

If anyone has a real issue on this problem, please let us know.

The only thing that indeed help was to completely uninstall my anti-virus (Eset). After uninstallation I rebooted the system. Since then every vpn connection just works fine. It seem the third party software uses the network filter / driver whatever in a way which does not go well with Windows 8.

I will try a beta version of Eset which is "really" supported with Windows 8

December 18th, 2012 1:57pm

Although the VPN servers are returning a lot of errors during connection, my problem turned out to be sleep mode needed disabling. But those errors in connecting seem to be the result of working from Local/Admin account in Win 8, because they don't occur when working as full Admin.  Since I never had a standard account in Win 7, I don't know if that would have been the case there.

When searching for help with my favorite searching machine I always find this blog entry. It is marked as "answered" (OK there are anwers) - but this should not be marked as "solved", I think.

I have the same problems and I think the reason lies in one of the updates I go after Dec. 14, 2012. This is the last date my Outlook was synced successfully with the server.

I have VPN connection problems to my company network from my home network with windows 7 and windows 8. Windows XP ist still working. My windows 8 (I updated a windows 7 machine with windows 8 pro early in december and everythink worked fine in the beginning. I could connect to the remote network via windows vpn, access the file system on the server, sync my outlook with exchange server. This changed about 10 days ago.

When finding no solution I tried to connect with a windows 7 machine (which also always connected before) - same problem. Now - yesterday - I was glad to find out that on the server everything seems to be still OK because an even older windows XP laptop that always connected before is still connecting now.

For the moment I decided to use my windows XP machine to do my work online and to sync my outlook and not to change too many parameters on my windows 7 and on my windows 8 machines. It worked - and it suddenly did not work without changes. So I hope one of the next updates will make it work again - also without changes.

Hi,

I upgraded 1 week ago from Win 7 Pro to Win 8 Pro, and now I can't get VPN to work.

Everything worked fine in Win 7, but I try to create a new VPN in Win 8, as all my previous Win 7 connections are missing, I go through the setup VPN wizard and it just comes back "The Wizard Cannot Connect" that's it. No error messages in Event Log, it doesn't create the connection so I cannot try anything manually.

Help please, this is seriously affecting my work now.

Thank you.

Today was a day of patches. I downloaded 13 patches with invisible effect.

Most painful Windows 8 bug - VPN bug remains unsolved since October 2012 :(.

Amazing this has still not been fixed.  We are not buying or supporting any Windows 8 installations company-wide until this is resolved.  Not having reliable VPN is a major deal-breaker for us.

Maybe the tagline for the next release of the operating system can be:  "Windows 9: Now with VPN!"

Hi all

I had the same problem happen again.

Here is what I did this time.

1             I uninstalled Avast.

2             Then went through my Registry and removed everything that had Avast in it.

3             I then went to windows Firewall and clicked on Restore Defaults accepted the warning and continued.

4             Reboot PC

Once the above was completed I connected to the VPN and I had access to the internet and the mapped drives.

However I then reapplied Avast and the same issue occurred.  Damn it.

I repeated step 3 above rebooted the PC and all was well again.

Hope it helps.

January 19th, 2013 12:25am

Congratulations. You are in luck. Not only Avast but also Kaspersky (confirmed) AV can do it.

I never use third party AV on my istallation (my tip not confirmed is that IP protocol on my computer could be modified with "Lenovo system update" or "Microsoft Network Monitor").  But uninstallation and registry clean helped not.

I think that we need serious repair of IP protocol from Microsoft. Seems that Microsoft gave not enough information about his new IP protocol implemtation in Windows 8 to others.  The problem is very serious and since October (or Summer 2012- the problem was in Pre Release too) is clearly no will to help wit it.

There is no serious Microsoft KB paper about it, no Fix It how it was early for XPs, W7..

I spent about an hour on the phone to MS Support (transcript available if any one wants a laugh).  I had to point them to this article and their only suggestion was to uninstall Avast and test, I was looking for a proper solution from them.   This was the second time I had come across this and made more difficult as I was remote accessing the PC to fix it.  I lost contact to the machine because of the no internet access issue.  At that point I gave up with MS Support and arranged a call back.

In the main time I regained access and carried out the above steps. I then emailed the MS support agent about my solution for my issue.

Here is the reply:-

"Thanks for the heads up. Based on the other forums that I have read, most of the third party security programs causes conflict on windows 8 operating system and VPN.

I will be informing my senior technician regarding this so that we could also check for immediate updates.

I am not assuring you that we will be able to come up with  a resolution about this right away but I'll make sure to keep you posted.

As of the mean time please try to use microsoft security essentials instead of avast, and check if there would also be conflicts with the virtual private network."

Nice reply I will waist more time to fix/test their issue and lack of communication to third party's and then let them know.

But it was nice to have an email to reply to and hope they do further investigations to fix the issue.

Rob

At least some people have a 3rd party security program to blame!

The machine I have with this problem does not have any 3rd party network or security tools installed.  Just plain ol' Win8 Professional.  I can run Win7 in a VM and get vpn with network access, but I should not HAVE to do something that silly.

If Win8 broke simple PPTP connections, what else may have been broken that we do not know about?

The most comical thing about this is the only recommendation from Microsoft is to uninstall security software?  Is that because the platform is so secure we do not need any additional security software?

Dear all ,

I have been working to solve this issue like 2 month ago , and I was sure that this is somehow of a miss-configuration, Managed to solve my problem by checking what I have installed as software and such .

I Wasn't pretty sure what is the software or what was the software causing all the issues , but in my case it was Antamedia DHCP server which wasn't even compatible with Win 8 yet

now please this is only for professional IT users , those who cannot handle this kind of configuration don't do it , as it may damage your whole system , our work will be in the Registry editor ,

Run --> regedit --> locate the following registry subkey:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E972-E325-11CE-BFC1-

08002BE10318}

now the trick is to backup this file by exporting it and saving it somewhere ,and after you have to browse the keys for the one installed by your software and causing all the issues .

any one not abling to locate the key just send me the export file or post it here as a reply and maybe I can help him fix it , I know how annoying this issue is and that's why I'm offering my help , and in case of non professional users I may be able to help them remotely when ever I'm online just send me an email on Safu@live.com

Please remember to mark this as answer if it works thank you and hope it helps you all from all over the world

It works for me:

  1. Run Control Panel -> System and Security -> Windows Firewall.
  2. Click Advanced settings on the left.
  3. Choose Inbound Rules.
  4. On the right click New Rule....
  5. Select Predefined, choose Routing and Remote Access, and click Next.
  6. Check all three rules, and click Next.
  7. Choose Allow the connection, and click Finish.
  8. Than repeat actions for Secure Socket Tunneling Protocol (in Inbound Rules).
  9. Than repeat actions for Routing and Remote Access (in Outbound Rules).
  10. Restart computer, and VPN connection.

Good luck guys!

I had RAS running on my new Samsung laptop but it stopped working a few days ago with all the symptoms described here in the thread. It turned out that the "FortiClient SSL VPN" (FortiClientConnect_Windows_x64_4.3.0.0398.exe) was the reason. Obviously this version is not Windows 8 compatible. I simply uninstalled it, rebooted and RAS is working again!

So: Maybe your problem is not a 3rd party antivirus or firewall, but an old 3rd party VPN client.

March 1st, 2013 4:38am

Not sure if it's appropriate to post here or I should start my own thread, but I have a very similar issue. Have tried two Windows 8 Pro clients connecting to Server 2008 R2. Windows 8 clients give me an 809 error when attempting to connect via L2TP. Attempting to connect using PPTP yields a 619 error. I can connect using identically configured Windows 7 clients. I can also connect from the same LAN as the VPN server using the Windows 8 clients.

As a test, to ensure there wasn't a bad windows update, or a third party piece of software interfering, I created a new virtual machine, installed a new, clean build of Windows 8, verified that I could connect to the VPN from the LAN, used the AssumeUDPEncapsulationContextOnSendRule mod that I've been using since Vista, then connected a wireless adapter and disconnected from the LAN and tethered through a 4g modem. FINALLY, I had connected a machine running Windows 8 from outside my LAN to my server running 2008 R2.

Unfortunately, I still have NO clue why I cannot using any other clients. I'm going to take an image of my Series 9 and do a fresh install, and see if it works. This is really a bad problem.

Hi,

Here is another variation to theme that may provide some clues to someone. When I connect to work VPN, my internet connection goes to "limited".  I have bitdefender av but  uninstalling this did not help. (I did not try look through the registry to remove remnants).  Here is the interesting bit:

- If I change my browser proxy setting to use the third party proxy settings that we use from work (where the VPN host is), I can connect to the internet and the icon goes back to showing full connectivity.

But:

- I cant map to my network locations on my work server.

- I cant cannect to exchange server, unless I change to HTTP protocol.

Under windows 7, I could do both of these.  I am not particularly network protocol savvy, but looks me that at least in my case, some sorts of traffic are being routed correctly, but others not.

So I found a possible fix for people using Kaspersky Antivirus. My company is thinking about moving to Windows 8 machines and I've been tasked to putting together the migration path. We have hit a snag with Windows 8 and Cisco VPN client (5.0.07.0440 and 5.0.07.0410) and Kaspersky Endpoint 10 (10.1.0.867). The VPN client would connect but I am not able to hit any of our servers on the VPN network. I tried many of the prescribed solutions from adding exclusions to the Kaspersky firewall etc. The only way I was able to get the VPN to finally work correctly was to not have the Kaspersky NDIS filter 6.0 from starting up. This requires a registry change. Below are the steps:

1. In Kaspersky, you must first disable Self-Defense

2. Go to your registry by typing regedit in the run menu

3. Navigate to \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\klwfp (note: for older Kaspersky versions it might be kltdi instead of klwfp)

4. There will be a key called "Start" and should have a default of "1". Change that to "4"

5. Enable Self-Defense again and restart

6. Once restarted when you connect via the VPN, you should be working again.

Hope this helps out people. If you have any questions feel free to shoot me an email:

Thanks,

Phillip

I'm seeing similar problems with office 2013 on windows 7 when the VPN is active. For example help can't connect. Everything is fine when the VPN is disabled. Meaning I don't think this is a firewall issue. I assume because Windows thinks my connection has no internet access it's failing. I do have internet access via our internal gateway.

Hello.

Windows 8 pro 32bit. has no 3rd party firewall or antivirus, only microsoft firewall and defender.

try to connect with L2TP connection to work VPN server (PSK or cert) - has error 809. connect with IKEv2 - all work fine. My home ISP get me Internet from L2TP connection (no PSK, no cert). maybe its a problem with double L2TP? But L2TP & IKEv2 use the IPSec protocol, so why IKEv2 work? and L2TP not?

upd: install virtualbox on my PC. create new VM, settings-network-NAT, install Win8 Pro 32bit system. create L2TP connection (PSK & cert) to job - its work! Why? :)

upd2: reinstall OS, install all updates. install soft, which was on previous OS installation. L2TP connection work fine.

I have about the same VPN working on Windows 7 and then same settings not working on Windows 8 64-bit. I have disabled both firewall and defender and have no other Firewall or Anti-virus installed. I get 913 Error, The remote connection tries to connect through a port that is reserved for routers. Is it it a bug or is it something I can fix?

It worked just once. Since then I cannot reach remote folders although connection established. (Limited)

So the result is the same as before.

Shrew VPN works under Windows 8.1. For those who had him installed before upgrade need to reinstall.

Upgrade from 8 to 8.1 break some services,so uninstall will fail at some point, but just cotinue. Install again and it works :-)

October 26th, 2013 7:48pm

having setup Shrew VPN and have it work fine on Win 8 returning from Xmas I was greeted with a laptop that the Shrewsoft VPN had 'stopped working' with the message 'no internet access' after windows update to 8.1, uninstalled Shrewsoft as suggested (uninstall reports errors as suggested but just continue) rebooted, installed latest version 2.2.2 works fine. nice one Loza

But there were still problems, even though the tunnel appeared to be up, no connection was possible to the server (with outlook or explorer) and the solution:

With upgrades sometimes winsock or the TCP/IP stack gets corrupted. To reset them both type the following two commands into an elevated command prompt one at a time hitting enter after each one then reboot the system.

netsh winsock reset catalog (reset winsock entries)

netsh int ip reset reset.log hit (reset TCP/IP stack)

et voila all working fine

thanks Microsoft for breaking things yet again!

I've been getting error 720 (sometimes 800?) for a couple weeks. I'm Win8.1 Pro, clean install.  Working with my I.T. mgr it seems like the VPN cannot negotiate protocols.  Of course I'm the only one experiencing these issues so they're chalking it up to old hardware/drivers (Dell e6510).

In the end I had the idea to use System Restore to restore back to the point when the VPN worked.  I lost a few programs and configuration settings, but it worked!  I now create a Restore Point every so often with the tagline "VPN Works!" just in case.  Which comes in handy because it occurs every so often.

I figured by now I would have noticed a definite pattern, but I've only found two possibilities:

  • Windows Defender always seems to have an update around the time it occurs (It may be the same update, I've haven't bothered paying too much attention until recently - KB2267602)
  • This morning I noticed when I installed an update to VirtualBox, that the VPN stops working.  Rollback to before I upgraded VirtualBox, back in business

It seems like if anything tries to mess with my network settings it puts the machine in some state of panic where the VPN will no longer work.

Hope this helps someone.

I was having very similar problems with Windows 8 Pro and here is what I figured out:

1. Create your incoming vpn connection on the server ( http://www.howtogeek.com/135996/how-to-create-a-vpn-server-on-your-windows-computer-without-installing-any-software/ ).  First I ran into a 720 error, and here was my fix.  To start, I disabled TCP/IP v6 on client and server.  In TCP/IP v4 settings, you need to set up a block of at least 2 ip addresses (one for the server and one for the client), use ones outside of your dhcp pool.  On the client, specify using a specific IP address, (I used the second of the two) in the block.  Now you should be able to connect without a 720 error.  This gave me access to machines on my network except the server itself (which is the one I wanted to connect to!)

2. Then I figured out that the incoming connection was considered a "Public" connection and so was subject to the firewall.  Go to gpedit.msc->Computer Configuration->Windows Settings->Network List Manager Policies->RAS (Dial In) Interface->Network Location.  Change it to Private.  This disables the firewall (I am using Windows Defender, but should probably apply to others), now you can access the server itself (e.g. via RDP) from its regular IP address on your remote network (not the one in the block you specified earlier).

3. So, this gives you full access to your remote LAN, but I still haven't figured out how to get access to the remote gateway and use my remote internet connection for web requests.  Default Gateway is blank on my client and I see no place it can be set.  That being said I just wanted to RDP primarily so I am okay here.  Maybe there is a solution with Internet Connection Sharing.
