Windows 8 Media Centre reports - No TV Signal - for 1 channel only

I have tried looking at KB # 955485 - but I get a 'Sorry - can't login message'
Australia recently changed broadcast frequencies of some of the available Free To Air TV channels, one of these was SBS.

When I retuned my WMC to make the necessary adjustments - I couldn't get SBS.

Upon investigation I found that whilst SBS was one of the channels that had changed frequencies, it had not amended its stream data to show this new frequency.

The stream data was showing the following: -

# signal locked = Y present = Y stength = -20 quality = 100
# locked 184500, 7 signal locked = Y present = Y stength = -20 quality = 100

Network_2("SBS Brisbane", 585625, 7, 1)
  Program_ 1("SBS ONE"             ,  817,  161,    81, 1025)    # LCN=3 Teletext=41
  Program_ 2("SBS TWO"             ,  818,  162,    83, 1026)    # LCN=32 Teletext=42
  Program_ 3("SBS 3"               ,  819,  161,    81, 1032)    # LCN=33 Teletext=41
  Program_ 4("NITV"                ,  820,  164,    87, 1033)    # LCN=34 Teletext=45
  Program_ 5("SBS HD"              ,  821,  102,   103, 1024)    # LCN=30 Teletext=43
  Program_ 6("SBS Radio 1"         ,  830,    0,   201, 1027)    # LCN=37
  Program_ 7("SBS Radio 2"         ,  831,    0,   202, 1028)    # LCN=38
  Program_ 8("SBS Radio 3"         ,  832,    0,   203, 1029)    # LCN=39

Where the actual frequency is 184500KHz - yet the stream data reports 585625KHz

I reported this information to the Broadcaster and they responded with the following: -

'Hi Russ,

 Thank you for your email.

Your assessment is correct. The frequency number for SBS in the broadcast stream Is still referencing the old frequency (585.625) and it will take approximately 3-4 weeks for it to be updated to the new frequency (184.5).'

After a reminder e-mail at the four week mark - no changes had been made.

At my final reminder at the eight week mark - I cc'd the MD of SBS into the e-mail.

I had a phone call within 5-hours advising me that the changed had been made.

Checking the Broadcast details I find that the changes to the stream data have in fact been made: -

# signal locked = Y present = Y stength = -20 quality = 25
# locked 184500, 7 signal locked = Y present = Y stength = -20 quality = 25

Network_2("SBS Brisbane", 184500, 7, 1)
  Program_ 1("SBS ONE"             ,  817,  161,    81, 1025)    # LCN=3 Teletext=41
  Program_ 2("SBS TWO"             ,  818,  162,    83, 1026)    # LCN=32 Teletext=42
  Program_ 3("SBS 3"               ,  819,  161,    81, 1032)    # LCN=33 Teletext=41
  Program_ 4("NITV"                ,  820,  164,    87, 1033)    # LCN=34 Teletext=45
  Program_ 5("SBS HD"              ,  821,  102,   103, 1024)    # LCN=30 Teletext=43
  Program_ 6("SBS Radio 1"         ,  830,    0,   201, 1027)    # LCN=37
  Program_ 7("SBS Radio 2"         ,  831,    0,   202, 1028)    # LCN=38
  Program_ 8("SBS Radio 3"         ,  832,    0,   203, 1029)    # LCN=39

I re-ran the channel setup in WMC all the other channels come in fine - Yet SBS still reports no TV Signal.

Is there a database or registry entry that needs clearing - setting or otherwise modifying that will remedy this situation?

Hi,

You can follow  the steps below to resolve this problem for test.

1. Go to Tasks>Settings>TV>Guide>Edit Channels & click on Clear All & Save.

2. Click on Edit Channels & then select (tick) all the channels you wish to have. DO NOT GO IN TO THE SETTINGS FOR ANY CHANNEL AT THIS STAGE. Click Save.

3. Click on Edit Channels & then click on your first selected (ticked) channel. Click on Edit Sources & deselect (un-tick) the unwanted sources, leaving the correct sources as the only ones selected (ticked). Click Save & then Save again, & repeat for each of your selected channels.

4. Once you have deselected the unwanted sources for all of your selected channels, at the Edit Channels screen, click Save & then exit from the Settings area all together.

In addition, because this problem relate with WMC, I would recommend you access the site below to ask the question for further help.

Roger,

Thank you for your response - unfortunately - the issue is not with the receiver (there are two VideoMate SAA716x compliant TV Cards in the system) giving me a total of four receivers.  Each receiver now shows the transmitted frequency, the issue was that the Stream Data transmitted by the TV station after the frequency change was still transmitting the incorrect frequency of 585625KHz when it should have been 184500KHz.

The TV station is now sending the correct frequency of 184500KHz in its stream data, and whilst I can see all the programming data for the TV channel within WMC - I still can't get any pictures.

It would appear that somewhere within WMC it still thinks that the station is still transmitting on the old frequency.

Short of the usual response of 'perform a clean boot and that should resolve your issue' I would like to find an expedient way of resolving this issue.

Hence my original question 'Is there a database or registry entry that needs clearing - setting or otherwise modifying that will remedy this situation?'  Surely one doesn't have to uninstall one's registered programs - clean boot the system - then reinstall all of one's applications - a task that will consume most of the day.  This is 2013 not 1980 and MSDOS,

Baring that - is there some way to completely uninstall WMC and re-install it using what will then be a clean slate?

Hi,

Just run the following command from an elevated command prompt (right click Command Prompt in the start menu, Run as Administrator):

%SystemRoot%\ehome\mcupdate.exe -MediaCenterRecoveryTask

This will completely reset your guide data and channel information, but shouldn't change anything else in WMC .

In addition, Uninstalling and then reinstalling WMC should remove all of your settings, including recording settings, library settings, everything.

Control Panel->Programs and Features->Turn Windows features on or off->Media feature.

Roger,

Thanks for that - unfortunately - I still get the same result - I'll have to check with one of my work companions who also has WMC but on Win 7 to see if he gets SBS correctly - I'll let you know the outcome.

Roger,

It would seem that my final problem was with the driver - the frequency now used by SBS for its digital transmissions, used to be used by another channel for their analogue TV channel.  I found a forum where others in my area with the same TV Card had the same issue.

I bought a USB based dual channel receiver, and it gets all of the channels fine.

Thank you for your assistance.

Regards

RussM
