Have you tried to add another e-mail account to have a check?This will help us to verify whether this issue is caused by the specific account or the mail app.
For this account, we can try to manually to sync have a check.
Step1: Point to the top-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down and click Mail.
Step 2: Swipe down from the top edge, tap or click More, then tap or click Sync.
If it worls, we can configure the sync settings to sync "as items arrive" to have a check.
We also can try the following steps to change the setting for how much email is downloaded:
Step 1: On the Start screen, tap or click Mail.
Step 2: Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and tap or click Settings.
Step 3: Tap or click Accounts, and tap or click the account you want to change.
Step 4: Under Download email from, select a timeframe, such as The last month.

If the issue only occurred with this account, we can re-add the account to have a check.
Please ensure the Mail app is up to date. To check for updates to the Windows 8 Mail app, from the Start screen, go to Store > Settings > App updates > Check for updates.
If all the account will come across this issue, we can re-install this Mail App to have a check.
