Please boot to recovery console and perform a system restore.

January 14th, 2013 11:15am

a lot of older machines have compatibility issues

1 makes sure your BIOS is updated

2 try the recovery then install 8 as an upgrade and see if that works better

*UPDATE*

not sure if this will help but it's been a week now and hasn't happened again

this is what I did

I REINSTALLED Vista , went in ran all the updates , updated all drivers , updated all software for usb devices

I did all this in Vista

than went and reinstalled Win8 upgrade , this time though didn't use download from internet , made a media ( backup recovery iso. file ) burned to DVD and installed upgrade that way

when reinstalling win8 upgrade when the option appears to bring files and settings over instaed of clicking NOTHING I clicked save files and settings

maybe the drivers carried over from Vista to win8 that way

also this time I DIDN'T delete the Windows Old Folder ( the Vista Install )

also turned OFF window automatic updates in win8

also turned OFF automatic maintenance

you'll get a little warning flag but you can turn those notifications off in the action center

last in the power options I set it to put the computer to sleep NEVER

my thought was maybe the usb's get some error code when moving the mouse to wake computer

also maybe now that the drivers are up to date in the windows old folder they have carried over in to win8

again it's been a week , no guarantee that any of this is a solution , just thought I would give you a heads up

I have the same problem on a new Windows 8 laptop (Sony T) with touchscreen. Luckily, the touchscreen still works. But all other input devices are not functioning. It's not a USB problem as external USB hard drives are working.

After Windows Update and reboot, lost all input devices.

if the mouse stops working even when in Linux then there is a hardware issue. Try a different mouse or keyboard and see if the works any better. If not then the rig may be in error and in need of a new system board.

January 22nd, 2013 2:00pm

I am seeing similar issues. I have a very new Lenovo Yoga (touchscreen, win8 came installed). On occasions when I flip between win8 native apps and desktop apps, I have noticed that my keyboard and mouse will randomly become unresponsive. If I put the computer into sleep mode, the problem will fix itself for a short time, then recur. If I reboot, I am fine until the next time I use mixed native/desktop apps.

The touchscreen works in those instances where keyboard and mouse do not.

I suspect it's a driver issue, and possibly related to how x86 and win8 native apps function together. It may also be related to sleep mode. However, it's not something I am capable of resolving. It would be great if MS could figure this out and provide an updated set of drivers or do something else to resolve it, as it's frustrating when it starts to happen - I know at that point I'm sunk until I manage a reboot, and that's not terribly convenient in front of clients.

Sorry, no solution from me, but hopefully the additional voice will lend weight to this issue.

it's been almost 2 weeks without it reoccurring for me

I DID go in and disable sleep mode

also disabled the automatic updating

I have a Dell desktop ( XPS 630i )

so when the USB's stopped working I had no option but to go do a system restore

I would have to lean to it being a windows problem because the USB's worked in BIOs

I would try disabling the sleep mode

maybe it has something to do with the mouse drivers during wakeup

as I said , have my fingers crossed , hasn't happened in 2 weeks

Hi,

I Have the same problem ( Asus motherboard, Intel P5, Intel 6 series/C200 motherboard chipset, generic Lenovo brand keyboard and a logitech MX518 mouse.)

I've installed Windows 8 from scratch. Windows is using the generic keyboard and mouse drivers.

The keyboard and mouse worked fine in Windows 7, and still work fine if I boot into Linux (Linux Mint and Fedora). The problem appears to be either the generic HID drivers or the USB hub device drivers.

The keyboard and mouse work fine for a while, then fail at boot time. The keyboard and mouse are still powered up ut Windows doesn't recognise them. The keyboard and mouse work fine in the bios and continue to work in Linux (eg if I boot linux instead of windows.) - so the hardware, including the USB hub on the motherboard are OK.

Plugging the keyboard and mouse into other USB ports doesn't appear to fix the issue, however plugging in a SECOND keyboard and/or mouse works - ie the second keyboard is responsive even though the first one is still powered up, but apparently dead.

once you have a working keyboard and/or mouse back, if you remove the keyboard device from Device manager, both keyboards stop working, but after a reboot the keyboards and mice are re-detected and the keyboard HID driver is re-installed.

Both keyboards and mice start working again. the original keyboard and mouse work fine after you unplug the second one(s).

It's not a permanent fix. For me, this has happened three times so far. I'm considering downgrading back to Windows 7 as that works fine.

So, get a second keyboard (at least) or a cheap wireless keyboard/mouse combo and keep it handy.  But seriously Microsoft - this is an issue that appears to only affect Windows 8. it's a driver problem, not a hardware issue.

Agree with Dan

Got the same issue twice already. Asus A8N mobo, Logitech mouse, Win8 prerelease. No change in the system, no new hw or sw installed; turned off the PC on Saturday with everything working fine, switched it on on Sunday and the mouse is not working anymore - so impossible to trace the gesture & unlock.

Rebooted on an USB stick on a live distro of Linux: mouse is working fine

Changed some options in the boot, restarted the PC: still not working

Plugged a logitech K400 wireless keyboard with trackpad: not working either

Is it a problem with 'old' mobos ? or with Logitech mices?

Thanks

m

I am also having the same issue. I had to re-wire the USB extension from my desktop that connects my mouse and keyboard. As soon as I plugged it back in, it stopped working.

I booted a defender offline DVD, and everything worked fine.

When I boot into safe mode it doesn't work, nor in regular boot mode. Unfortunately, I disabled System restore, so it looks like I will be rebuilding my machine tomorrow. :(

What the hell could be causing it?

I am also having the same problem.  Mouse and keyboard quit working on reboot.  Couple of hard resets and eventually they start working again.  Asus MB, Intel P5, Win 8 Pro 64 bit, 8 GB of memory.  It's definitely not a hardware issue as all parts are only few months old.  I do have Logitech mouse and keyboard.

Similar issue to me, happened twice in a week. Dell Inspiron 15 SE, Windows 8. Mouse works fine to me but keyboard just stopped working for no reason. Had to spent 20 mins restoring the system and fixed this issue.

Really frustrating issue. Hope MS could fix it asap.

Many thanks,

I am having the similar issue. I upgraded a HP p7-1235 to windows 8 in december and everything worked until an automatic windows update happened on March14 2013 and since then the keyboard and mouse are not working. I called HP as my system is still on warranty and they replaced the mother board on the system. Still the issue exists. Keyboard is being detected in the bios but not after booting into windows 8 (It boots into metro screen or the home screen what ever you call it). Finally HP is saying that the issue is with WINDOWS 8. I called Microsoft and they tried telling me in different ways on how this is not a windows8 problem and I should buy a new USB device and plug my keyboard and mouse into it and blah blah blah...... It looks like I am totally screwed now as I bought the windows 8 and upgraded myself. System came with Win7 and HP is blaming it on windows 8.

This SUCKS. I am trying to fix this issue since Mar15. Already spent over 70hrs so far on trying to research this issue.

The problem is not any else where.... it is in windows 8. Microsoft, please fix this issue as soon as possible.

Update: I tried restoring to 3 of the previous restore points and it complains that it cannot restore as some thing is corrupted.

I think I'm seeing a similar issue on my Dell Precision 390.  It has been successfully running Windows 8 with a USB keyboard and mouse for several months.  I stopped the machine so that we could move to a different house (March 8, 2013), and now (March 24, 2013), about two weeks after the original stop, I performed its first start since the move and it does not recognize input from a USB keyboard or mouse.

The USB mouse has power, since it lights the LED on the mouse, but no mouse pointer appears.

A PS/2 keyboard is recognized and works correctly.

March 25th, 2013 6:00am

Exactly the same issue for me.

Windows 8 was working fine, installed the latest update and then... no keyboard no mouse recognized.

I've tried several keyboard and mouses to no result, the originals work just fine in BIOS, it's clearly the latest update that is causing this problem.

Computer is a Core i5 Medion

For the record I updated the system on February 25th at 22:00 GMT+1.

Can someone at Microsoft PLEASE give us an unser? we've already lost1 day of work due to this.

New Laptop, multi-boot, 64 Bit 8 & 7, XP ...

Only Windows 8 occasionally drops the external USB mouse & keyboard (PS/2 to USB converter) to 4 Port KVM switch on boot.

The Laptop keyboard & Pad continue to work.

As a driver writer I know how hard it is to get a good USB driver.

Microsoft made a boo boo, kinda like the Intel Penium 50 MHz Processor.

It just can't do its math. (hint).

Having the same issue here. Have a Dell Studio XPS (i7, 16GB RAM, upgraded to Win 8 from Win 7) Has been running fine for several months. Mouse and keyboard do not respond in Win 8, yet work fine in BIOS. USB ports work fine otherwise, with detection of connection of other devices. Strangely the multi-media keys on keyboard work (calculator, email, IE, volume). Scanned HD for virus, malware etc but came up clean. Have tried to restore, repair, reset, refresh, safe mode and nothing. I have duplicated original HD so will now try re-installing OS. This is a true pain in the ass. Am hoping to hear of a fix so I need not bother re-installing, and apply to original HD. Maybe I could delete the mouse and keyboard drivers externally and see if they re-install properly? Where do the drivers hide out?

My problem is exacty as NevetsOwl.
I have an external keyboard and mouse connected to the USB hub, PS2 to USB converter.
It works for about 10 to 20 minutes after a restart, then quits. The lights remain on, so the devices are connected, though The original keyboard and mousepad continue to work just fine.

The computer is a brand new laptop, acer V3, i5-3210M 8GB, Win8 64bit.

I find loads of people with a similar problem, but I haven't found a solution yet.

Is this possibly a security issue? When Windows 8 runs a security check, it disconnects the USB keyboard and mouse? Just a thought.

Hello,

This has happened to me on my windows 8 computer lots of times, ever since February my mouse his just stopped working and I had to either restart my computer or put it in sleep mode. This also happens to my keyboard. If MS would fix this than it would be greatly appreciated. And I am using a Logitech mouse.

If i disable SP2 in the BIOS configuration would this help - not sure if i should try this as the result may be even worse? Thanks

i'm having the same issue. i got my windows 8 upgrade very early and everything worked fine. but since a recent update my keyboard (logitech g710+) and my mouse (logitech g9) stop working after two beeps occurring. then i have to hard boot my pc at least two or three times - and they will be recognised by windows 8 again. until it happens over and over.

it started when i loaded a game. but now it also happens when opening a website. just randomly.

system: asus P5P43TD Pro motherboard

8 gigs ram

radeon 6790 gpu

intel quadcore

very odd and very annoying stuff. i even tried a windows 8 reset. installed everything from scratch. does not help.

i think i will have to downgrade to win7 again at this point.

Same issue for me already twice on a brand new Asus pc. After reboot the keyboard stop working. Given all the different pc and brands in this forum having the same issue, it seems clear that it's a software bug on windows 8. Please Microsoft, help!

Old HP Pavillion DV6000 with a sweet SSD drive that was upgraded to win 8 pro more than 3 months ago.  All worked fine and snappy (for  an AMD 64 Athlon X2) until a recent update.  Now my keyboard is not working in the APP mode.

All was good Microsoft... What happened?!
June 9th, 2013 4:09am

Similar problem here, with some variations. The PC concerned is a rather recent hybrid (tablet + keyboard dock): Asus VivoTab TF810 running Windows 8. I discovered the issue shortly after the latest round of "patch Tuesday" updates (12 June) but there's no sure link between the events. Windows does not seem to get any keystroke from the keyboard, nor cursor input from the touchpad; the on-screen keyboard works though. No amount of reboots, dock/undock would make them work again. I uninstalled the latest updates one by one to no avail; tried quite a few things. I noticed that the keyboard is not completely "dead" though: 4 keys seem to keep working: wifi on/off, Bluetooth on/off, touchpad on/off, auto-brightness on/off. Windows also "sees" the keyboard when docked as new entries appear accordingly in the Device Manager (HID Keyboard Device). However in the on-screen keyboard's selector (where one can choose between split on-screen kbd, pen input, etc) the physical keyboard appears as a greyed out option.

Could we please have some input from Microsoft on this issue?  It doesn't seem to be very common, as rather few posts seem to be related to it in the forums.

I stand ready to contribute any amount of details, logs, traces to help ID the problem.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

I have been having the same issue with a new HP Desktop.

I am using a brand new Logitech wireless MK520 the mouse is the hardware that is giving me the most problems.

I called Logitech and they sent me a new keyboard so I know that the hardware is working properly.

I also called HP and they observed that if the wired mouse works there is nothing that they can do to help with the wireless device.

Did you or anybody else out there was able to fix this issue?

June 26th, 2013 6:24am

I have a similar situation that I seem to be able to reproduce at will.

I'm using a Dell Inspiron 5721 with a fresh install of Win8 Pro (diskpart drive and install Win8 after laptop arrived). Everything's been running perfectly for the 4 months I've had this laptop. I use Chrome mainly, except for the following situation.

If I use the web-based LogMeIn with IE (IE 10.9.9200) and remotely connect to a particular 2008 Hyper-V server and try to Connect to a Hyper-V machine from within that server, the IE browser tab crashes and the laptop keyboard no longer functions in any way until I log out of the laptop and back in again. So far I have been able to do this at will. I haven't re-started yet this time, but yesterday when this happened I did. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I have an external HDD and a USB mouse connect, and the mouse continues to work. The touchpad is disabled, but now that I think about it, I will test if the touchpad stops working too.

Weird and frustrating.

USB mouse connect, and the mouse continues to work.

Sounds different.  E.g. if mouse is still working you could presumably use the On-Screen Keyboard (osk.exe) or even Touch (e.g. TIP) to keep going and try to recover from a driver failure that way, e.g. instead of rebooting.   Similarly, you could try getting more details about the cause of the failure (e.g. using Event log) or about the state of the device (using Device Manager or (my new toy) wmic.  (Don't ask me for the appropriate queries. <w>))

Good luck

I'm suddenly having the same issue.  I've been using Windows 8 since it released and it's worked fine.  Some time in the last week updates were installed and Windows kept posting a reminder to reboot my system, which I ignored until this morning.

When the system rebooted after finishing the updates, the mouse and keyboard were dead.  Everything seems to boot up fine otherwise.

After much screwing around myself and a useless chat session and phone call to MS Support, I rebooted using the Windows 8 dvd.  Mouse and Keyboard work fine when booting from dvd.  From the dvd I got to a cmd prompt and manually forced a boot to safe mode with bcdedit, removed the dvd and then rebooted to safe mode.

Safe mode still has the same mouse and keyboard issues when I boot from internal disk.

Prior to using the dvd to get a cmd promt, I noticed in my many futile attempts to force recovery mode while booting using shift-F8 that the keyboard worked fine until the very second Windows started loading and then it stopped. This is clearly a driver issue in Windows 8.

I tried using a different mouse and keyboard.  I tried using two of both at once. Nothing worked.  I don't have PS2 ports nor do I have a converter for USB to try and use.

MS Support said I needed to Refresh or Reset the computer from DVD to resolve, but in either case, I loose all of my installed apps and settings.  I have no restore point, which is a bit frustrating as it was turned on.

Anyone have an idea where the drivers are and the names?  I could potentially try delete them from the command prompt when booting from the DVD and then attempt a repair from the dvd recovery manager.

This is clearly a driver issue in Windows 8.

You could try booting with the unsigned driver option.

Otherwise I think you could turn to wmic.exe again for this too.  I even had a query that worked but I don't remember what it is...

wmic:root\cli>sysdriver list brief

I think I have seen something better than that but could give you a clue especially if you have two otherwise identical systems to compare.

Another option that I have seen some apparently use is Remote Desktop, e.g. somehow the problem machine is usable that way, though "headless".   Then that might allow you to "boot" the problem machine and do more conventional diagnosis and repair procedures on it.

Good luck

If you were booting to a Recovery Console you may not have the same device problem with it.  Otherwise, to frame an answer to the question, I don't think you need a mouse, just a keyboard would do.  E.g. press Tab or Shift-Tab to navigate and Spacebar or Enter to activate.

I've the same issues. This can be the problem... and the solution: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/66198-3-keyboard-freezes-system

If you have installed vmware in windows 8 is a compatibility issues.

It is very possible that you inadvertently activated the filter key option on windows. This can happen by pressing the "shift" key for 8 seconds or more. Try turning it off by navigating to the lower right corner of your desktop screen on the menu for icons. On my PC it is "show hidden icons". Look for the icon that looks like a stopwatch and open the application. Once the options are shown, uncheck the first two boxes and apply/OK. Try your keyboard on some application like your internet browser or a word processing program.

This all worked for me, the toddlers got to the computer when I was not looking.

Good luck!

What about your bootable recovery media?
July 22nd, 2013 4:19pm

WOWWWW I never thought of an update issue..... your dates seem about when my probs started.

I found opening desktop keyboard helped, every boot hD START with desktop kb.. very frustrating... I have been blaming a bug. So after months of frustration i decided to rebuild my system............... BUT this morning when I got up I was all excited at the prospect of a healthy computer...... This worked for me - both to fix a non working keyboard on a dell laptop and (here's the odd one) to restore the windows button on a dell xps10 tablet. There's no way we could inadvertently turned sticky keys on on both. They use the same user login, though. Does this setting get transferred through the cloud?

I'm experiencing the same problem, others already have related to since Automatic Windows Updates in March 2013(!). I'm running Windows 8 as second OS on a dual boot laptop (HP 630). After the Windows Update in March a system reboot was required to complete the updates. In consequence: the touchpad and keyboard did not work since then. Lately, I found out, that not all keys are dead - like someone mentioned before - a couple of "special keys" like wireless ON/OFF, brightness +/- and volume +/- are functioning.

When I attach a USB mouse, it works like a charm. Using the OnScreen- Keyboard, it's possible, to handle a couple of things - but it's no way to do your all-day-work with it.

I tried to uninstall all drivers related to keyboard and touchpad via device manager. I tried to reinstall them (after several reboots). But neither the Microsoft nor the HP distributed Synaptics package succeeded. The setup alway stopped with the error: wrong parameter. Even Synaptics own install package failed with the same error. I tried to import the drivers from my Windows 7 installation, but it didn't help.

Again, I'm using Windows 7 as my main system until this Windows 8 bug is solved. In Windows 7 touchpad and keyboard are working as expecteded. The same goes for the BIOS and different linux live systems - it's only Windows 8 related!

Is there any Microsoft support team, which might find any solution to this?

not all keys are dead - like someone mentioned before - a couple of "special keys" like wireless ON/OFF, brightness +/- and volume +/- are functioning.

Sounds like a problem with not having the necessary driver for that keyboard.  Either that or having a stuck modifier key.  <eg>

tried to import the drivers from my Windows 7 installation, but it didn't help.

You mentioned that when referring a "Synaptics package" so it's not clear if you also did that with your laptop's keyboard driver(s)?

Looks like you may be on your own supporting this.  E.g. HP don't seem to be, so Microsoft won't be either.  So your goal should be to maintain compatibility or at least stable functionality, not try to get the "latest and greatest".   For example, on my tx2, MS continually reduce my Touchpad version to 15.3 even though I was able to install one of the later versions which try to simulate Touch screen support.  So be it.  I don't use my Touchpad anyway.  In fact, I don't use its keyboard much either.  So maybe I have a problem with it too?  Must check.  <eg>

The same issue happened to me this morning after an automatic update from good ol' MS.  No mouse or keyboard after the sign-in screen - happy day!  After restarting a few times with no result, I got into BIOS and reset the computer's settings - NOT the factory settings reset, but the other system reset that keeps your programs and claims only to delete recent apps.  Be warned - it WILL delete recent non-essential programs and apps, but will keep all the associated personal files from said programs (saved game info, personal office documents, etc.)

This being said, after reading this thread it is obviously a problem arising from the Windows 8 update.  I will be reinstalling Windows 7 to avoid this happening again.  Let's hope that MS eventually deals with what is definitely THEIR issue - much like Windows 95/XP when they first came out with a heap of debugging issues.  Should be all good - by the time windows 9 comes out of course ;D

I have this issue and isolated the cause as fault USB Controller drivers. However these drivers are from Microsoft itself.

Hardware Details - Microsoft Wired  Desktop 600 APB-00005, USB Pendrives and Logitech USB Headset H330

It's not a hardware issue:

These WORK normally on:

1 - BIOS and Recovery

2 - Windows XP, Vista and 7

3 - Ubuntu and Fedora

They do NOT WORK  properly on:

1 - Windows 8

Problem isolation:

When the Input devices are not working it's difficult to work, however Reseting the system by RESET button a few times makes Windows reinstall drivers and working for at least one session.

When the Pendrives or Headset not work if you remove the drivers and let Windows reinstall them they will work for at least that session. The problems arrive during Windows startup, as if the USB detection on logon couldn't communicate with the peripheral and marking it as Malfunctional, thus not being accepted by Windows

We need Microsoft to fix this issue ASAP

BTW: I rolled back to Windows 7 while this issue is not corrected

I have the same issue...  Have been using the Yoga for months, without problems.  Starting a few days ago, after a few hours of operation, the mouse (and touchpad) stop responding to clicks.  The pointer moves, but clicks are ineffective.  If I reboot, all is well for a few hours.

I had been using Windows 8 since it's release. I had the same problem with the USB mouse, Windows won't load the mouse drivers. i had to downgrade to Windows 7.

I reinstalled Windows 8 again last month to see if Microsoft fixed the issue. Everything went fine, but after 3 days, on system startup, my mouse still doesn't load.

The problem is on Windows 8's fast start-up.

Just disable fast start-up on the Power Options at the Control Panel. Then 'Choose what the power button does'. Then unclick fast start-up.

Hope this helps.

Brand new machine I7-4770 ASUS W8, mouse works in some parts of a window, but not in others. Also seems some of the Function keys don't always work.

August 21st, 2013 4:52am

Similar issue, on a brand new Samsung series 3 laptop (i5, 8gb ram) with Windows 8.

Used the laptop for more than a month without any problem, then suddenly (after a Win8 update?) the laptop's keyboard & touchpad stopped working. After restarting, keyboard & touchpad were only working until you tried to enter your password ...

I thought I had solved the problem a few days ago by setting a restore point ... However, today the same issue re-appeared.

Today I tried Pugo D's solution:

The problem is on Windows 8's fast start-up. Just disable fast start-up on the Power Options at the Control Panel. Then 'Choose what the power button does'. Then unclick fast start-up.

At first sight, the problem is solved again. Let's hope it stays this way!

Did you find a solution? I am having same issue. Microsoft tech support is as worthless as teats on a boar hog.

Brand new HP is going back to costco. I don't have patience or time for this garbage.

I had the same problem.  My logitech wireless keyboard started to annoy me.  When I pressed a key sometimes nothing happened.  And then after a while you saw a lot of keystrokes appearing at once.  My batteries seemed to be low, so it thought that was the issue.

I then bought a cheap new wired keyboard because I was thinking the wireless setup gave me problems, but after logging in I had the same problem.  None of the keys worked for me, not even the num lock was responding.

I then did a sytem restore from the W8 disc,  unfortunately all non-Metro apps were uninstalled.  But this seemed to solve the problem.  Everything working fine now.  So I suggest to do a repair.

I also have a Yoga 13 that is having keyboard issues.

when I cold boot the keyboard works and I can enter my password but then it stops working.  The volume rocker also stops working indicating it is probably connected to the function keys.  The teackpad still works.

Today I tried using an USB keyboard which does not work but an USB mouse plugged into the same port does work.

I got into the BIOS today and the keyboard is functional there.

Device Manager does not show any issues with anything.

This problem started after I started training Win8 to recognize my voice.

Thank-you!!!  I can't believe it was something that simple, boy do I feel stupid.

Anyway, it is nice to have a keyboard that works again.

Thanks!

Good luck!

This solved my problem.

I thought checking those boxes would help me but instead they have caused months of frustration.

I unchecked them, hit apply and went to Notepad and my keyboard is working again.

I was sure the issue was a Windows issue and not a hardware one but knew if I talked to Lenovo they would blame it on MS and if I talked to MS they would blame it on Lenovo, and both of them would say revert to a factory install.  I was hoping that 8.1 would solve the issue and am glad I waited.

Now I need to figure out if those options can be used effectively.

Thanks

Please see below for the July 28 2013 answer (it is a MS keyboard setting accessed from the desktop screen, not a physical failure issue).  Click on the "Show Hidden Icons" up arrow triangle in the lower right corner of the desktop and select the icon that looks like a stopwatch.  The rest is self explanitory.  Grumble.

This issue is found on several brand new laptops. I have worked on a Toshiba and a Acer. Both started doing this after the first birage of Windows 8 patches. Just need to find out which Windows 8 patches breaks the mouse.

I cant get windows 8 to give me this menu. I've cut power to it twice while its booting and It still wont give me this screen.

Man these features are annoying. I've been able to press F8 to get into safe mode since, what, at least 95. Was that really such a big blow to the user experience that they had to remove it? Gah.

edit 1: well, now I'm not sure where I am. I tried using the disk with a console but all of the utilities were complaining that, in effect, they couldn't see my windows 8 install. Lets say Disk 1 is where Windows is, Disks 2 and 3 are the other disks. In BIOS, to my surprise, disk 2 was my first boot device (after the dvd drive) so I flipped it to disk 1, booted, and, yet more surprisingly, I got a GRUB. So I removed the 2 drives windows 8 wasn't installed to (2 and 3), forgot to press any key when prompted, and got a 'Insert bootable media' message. Clearly I need to spend more time figuring out exactly what boot loaders are doing and how they're configured.

edit 2: So after all that shenanigans I let windows 8 boot to the lock screen, then cut power to the PC. This brought up a message saying 'You're E drive is messed up, I'm going to sit here scanning things for 10 minutes'. 1 Cup of coffee and 99 loading percentages later, and windows 8 let me use my mouse and keyboard again.

I've changed my settings to exclude the use of fast start-up. I've rebooted once and everything's gone fine. Fingers crossed, that was annoying.

Hello Forum.....I too had the same issue for almost a month.....I was thinking of getting a new hard drive just to get rid of Win 8.....I have searched high and low for a solution.....contacted Microsoft Tech Support....they are the worse help....acted like they did not understand my issue....etc. finally all of a sudden connection was lost! The other day in my last effort to find a solution I came across a different solution. The solution has something to do with the "f" key function. Which you can search for and turn it off! Keyboard is working fine now....had been using desktop keyboard.....ugh Ease of Access is the place to find it....sorry in my excitement I forgot to save the link...but it worked for me hope this helps

I had the Issue of mouse and keyboard that quit working even tho the programs don't.

I have found a fix til Microsoft fixes the problem with Windows 8

I was using an Optical USB mouse with 4 buttons and mouse wheel. My mouse and keyboard would stop working

anywhere from bootup to 4 hours.

I have since started using an 8 year old Optical USB mouse with 2 buttons and a mouse wheel that I had for my

XP laptop. since using the old mouse I haven't had any problems.

So my guess is bad mouse drivers for newer mice or for mice with more then 2 buttons.

Ok.  I got a solution!!!!

I had 8.1 installed 3 days ago.  windows 8 for almost a year.   One night, turn on the computer and no USB mouse or keyboard would work.  Stuck at the login screen.  Can't log in.   rebooting, etc etc.  After searching online for an answer and coming up with nothing, I came up with an idea.  I had a ps2 port for a keyboard or mouse on my computer.  So I plugged it in and restarted the computer, and it works!  I was able to log in using the virtual keyboard and a mouse.  Check the device manager in the control panel and USB Root hub (xHCI) had an exclamation mark on it.  I uninstalled it, and then search for hardware by right click menu.  Just like magic, it added the USB Root hub (xHCI) back without the exclamation mark, along with all of my USB mouses and Keyboards.  Problem solved.

Hope you have a PS2 mouse around...  or a touch screen.

Thanks a lot!

Great. Worked for me too.

Just offering support to this thread. In July I bought a Lenovo IdeaPad unfortunately using Win8. Worked fine for 2 months then suddenly keyboard and mouse stopped working. went round and round with Lenovo they replaced motherboard and keyboard and claimed the fixed it but did not. They refunded me my money. Just replaced it with Asus machine and second day I had it the keyboard stopped working, a Win8 machine of course. Had to do system restore to get it going again. On both machines I was using a wireless usb mouse and my guess it this is a driver conflict issue. I have not plugged the mouse back in and everything seems to be fine. Afraid to plug in the wireless mouse again.

Hi there, this problem has just Happened to me, I checked the website on my phone with no solution, So I thought i'll try out my USB ports on front of my case. I built my own pc, So for Laptop users you this might not work. Anyway, plug both mouse and Keyboard into the chassis USB ports, it should work from here on, then go to Control Panel and Device manager, Scroll down to the USB ports, They will have anError Cymbal on them, and Update the Drivers. All you need to do now, is plug the Keyboard and mouse back in to the original ports. Hope this Helps=D

This is absolutely not an solution for this problem !!!

I have a ASUS P5P4TD Pro, everything worked as a dream in Windows 8, last night i updated to Windows 8.1 and USB connected receiver for wireless mouse and keyboard do not work, it Works in bios and at boot, but just before the login screen the usb receiver loose Power (lamp turns of) and either mouse nor keyboard work.

But if i then unplug the receiver and plug it back in again (just matter of Seconds) it start work without a problem until i restart Windows 8.1, this was never a problem in Windows 8.

This motherboard do not have USB 3 ports, only highspeed usb2 ... i have tried both disabling (default) and enabled Legacy usb mode in Bios, no difference.

Its Clear that this is a big BUG in either Windows 8.1 or in one of the latest updates to Windows 8 and it need to be sorted out ASAP.

The problem here are how Windows now handles USB drivers or how the drivers are loaded in boot (as the Power being turned of right before the login screen !!!

Please send this to DEV asap to get it sorted.

I have also  tried this both With and without Logitech Setpoint (no difference)

Hello,

Take a look at this blog by the USB team which I think may cover this issue.

http://blogs.msdn.com/b/usbcoreblog/archive/2013/10/19/help-after-installing-windows-8-1-the-superspeed-ports-of-my-asus-system-don-t-work.aspx

November 8th, 2013 9:29pm

new lenovo ideapad amd a4. following install of comodo internet security keyboard failed after allowing lenono-9941.vbs.

uninstalled comodo and working again. ext usb mouse continues to work.

tip, install freevirtualkeyboard allows you to type if you haven't got a usb keyboard.

seems to be a problem between keyboard drivers and some security products. also trusteer fails badly and very difficult to uninstall as the virtual keyboard wont work in the app. trusteer provide an uninstaller which did help.

upgraded to 8.1, still the same. looks like you work or be secure but not both at the same time.

I wonder if this is a Levono issue.

I bought my wife a (then new) Levono computer last December. I wanted Win 7 but was given Win 8.  The only modification is that I have it boot to desktop instead of Metro.

About two weeks ago, she called me at work complaining that her mouse had disappeared. No icon or input. The mouse is a generic USB style, with no trackball.  The light on the mouse was still functioning. I walked her through task manger and to restart the system. This worked.

Last night, the same thing happened. I looked and could use the keyboard but no mouse input or icon on the screen.   I'm currently using that computer and have both mouse and keyboard.

Could there have been a USB driver update? How does one check the generic drivers in Win8? (I'm familiar with NT, 2K, Vista, Win7 and Linux but not so much Win8.)

November 30th, 2013 7:16pm

could use the keyboard but no mouse input or icon on the screen.

Are you sure about the no input or just the no icon?  E.g. others have this symptom because their Touchpad (another Pointing device) in W8 is trying to emulate Touch screen functionality and therefore hides the pointer.  The workaround is to move the pointer with a different Pointing device, such as a real mouse (which yours is apparently supposed to be).  In that state it is also possible to use Mouse sonar and Pointer tracking (when enabled) to infer the location of the mouse pointer even though you cannot see the actual pointer on the screen.  If you have multiple monitors, e.g. one Touch and one not it would also be possible to move the pointer to the non-touch monitor and then start seeing the pointer there.

Otherwise if there is really no input from the mouse at all then it sounds like a driver died.  In that case, you could probably get a clue about that in the Event log.  It is also possible to use WMIC (or Powershell) to query the state of the drivers (provided you know enough about the device description to help identify them from all the other device drivers <w>).

Oh.  I think I just found something that is going to make WMIC less useful than I thought for this scenario.  Open msinfo32.exe  (aka System Information) and do a Find (Ctrl-f) Search category names only (Alt-r) for Pointing device.  Then in that category check the Status of each.   Search selected category if necessary to do that.  If something is now not OK which should be that could explain your symptom.   ; )

Can't seem to post this at the end of the thread near the other Dec posting, so hope it's spotted here in the middle:

This thread is useful but my problems are similar but not identical, so wondered if any ideas of what my problem might be.

Got a 3 month or so old Samsung Series 5 Ultra with Windows 8, which had been working fine.  Around a fortnight ago after travelling (in case that's significant) the mouse (integrated touchpad mouse, never used anything else on this laptop) would not work at all.  Could not get mouse life so in end had kept restarting to run the battery down and when restart seemed to work... for a while.  I did a system refresh, which wiped my software and restore point did not work, but had mouse life, so resigned myself to the fact that I would just have to start setting up again.  Since then on occasions (not consistently or often), the mouse seems to stop functioning then comes back to life, but more annoying is the trouble with the he keyboard/mouse now (intermittently), as I am typing the cursor moves back several words or rows and inserts there! (not fun since I am writing job applications and updating my CV so proof reading is becoming a nightmare as text is being overtyped!).  Occasionally, when editing existing text jumps forward too.  Sometimes just blocks the text too and I accidentally overtype all text if I don't notice. Happens in most programs reinstalled on pc, not just one.

Strangely, even while typing this, the cursor is jumping back, but to the same place in the text (i.e. same previous word), even though the length of the message is growing.  Any ideas, and if not hardware, updates etc. do you think it could be a virus?  Thanks in advance for any ideas (I'm a non-techie).

I upgraded to windows 8.1 and started having problems with my keyboard. My son walked me through the fix. This would probably work for the mouse to.

Control Panel
Ease of Access
Change how your keyboard works
Set up filter keys
Set up Repeat Keys and Slow Keys
TOGGLE Ignore all repeated keystrokes and set the top drop down to 0.0 seconds

(MAKE SURE TO APPLY AFTER EACH CHANGED SETTING)

good luck

Hi - I know the original question was almost a year ago but I see many other people are still having similar issues and I have a work around. I just ran in the the exact same issue as many others on here. A users keyboard stopped function for her. I tried resetting windows and reinstalling windows but nothing helped. That is when I noticed it worked outside of her account (BIOS, Login Screen, Other User Accounts). I went to give her a new computer and that was when I noticed it followed her account to every computer so it is a setting attached to her Microsoft Account. I contacted Microsoft about this issue and they said they are aware of the bug and they should have a patch out to me with in 10 days. It the mean time I needed this student to have access to her tablet/laptop so I tried a few things. Below is what worked for me.

If you are having a similar issue with the keyboard not working but works in BIOS or other accounts try these steps for 8.1 (windows 8 may be slightly different):
1. Login to the account with the issue.
2. Bring up the Charms Bar (if you have a mouse swipe form the right, or move your mouse to the top right)
3. Touch or click search
4. Type filter keys using your onscreen keyboard (use your mouse to click keys or touch your screen)
5. Click on the link to "Turn filter keys on or off"
6. Turn off filter keys
7. Wait a moment and your keyboard should start working again. (may require a restart)
8. Some day in the future when MS puts out the fix install it and then you can turn filter keys back on.

Hope that helps a few people

I had/have the issue with the keyboard not working. I've solved that by pressing the WINDOWS button on the keyboard and ScrLk. It solves the problem in that the keyboard woks again. BUT it's a recurring problem so this is a solution albeit a temporary one.

Hope this helps

I am also facing the same problem with my usb ports which work fine in bios and other os but are unrespondive in windows 8.1

December 14th, 2013 2:48pm

Pugo D, you're a genius, whoever you are! This solved my problem (for now at least). I occasionally lose USB connectivity to my Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse (MK520 & M310). Usually, a reboot or shutdown resolves the problem. This morning is couldn't get it back at all. But I frequently switch between this wireless combo and the laptop keyboard with other wireless mouse. So, I figured something gets gummed when I go into sleep mode. Today I removed the wireless mouse while the machine was still sleeping and plugged in the wireless combo. That was just too sneaky for MS and Win 8.1 and fast-boot. One of these had to go...obviously fast-boot got thrown out first. Easy fix. Many, many thanks!!!

Now I think that I will play with "USB selective suspend settings" (under Power Options, Change settings for plan: ..., Change advanced power settings). It may be that I need to just turn off that setting On battery so that the USB devices will reset when I wake the laptop up.

BTW, I have a Lenovo Helix.

Regards

While I appreciate the suggestions, none are reliable on the one of my machines that's exhibiting this problem. <I must wonder why it's just the one since all three (different Motherboards were clean installed to Windows 8.1 pro 64 bit on the same day earlier this month)> My current workaround is to plug my USB keyboard, mouse and Wacom tablet into a USB 3.0 controller card. Of course I lose keyboard and mouse for BIOS changes but those are seldom necessary. If they are, I just plug my USB mouse and keyboard into the motherboard's USB ports then back to the controller card ports in which case the boot messages merely say no keyboard present but boots into Windows just fine <and thus the USB controller  card> ... this is a 100% reliable work around. I will monitor this site for updates on when Microsoft publishes an appropriate Win 8.1 Pro patch.   Cheers

if the mouse stops working even when in Linux then there is a hardware issue. Try a different mouse or keyboard and see if the works any better. If not then the rig may be in error and in need of a new system board.

You need to learn to read. With people like you running things, Niki, no question ever gets answered. Do not mark if you can't read, this is beyond silly.

It WORKS in Linux, it WORKS in the BIOS, it simply WORKS everywhere but Windows 8.
It happens right after the loading message @ login or metro screen.

ok, this was a promising barking up the wrong tree, the problem reappeared even with Hex 4 still set  ... my apologies, I shoulda tested.

So I will be more careful this time BUT given all the talk of xCHI ...

This whole problem may have started with the install of the Sabrent CP-4PTU USB 3.0 controller card on one of my machines (the one having this problem); the other 2 have been fine after Windows 8.1 clean installs (one has on board USB 3.0 and the other doesn't).

Folks have had success turning off xCHI in BIOS but the Asus P7H55-M Pro is USB 2.0 and has NO xCHI options in BIOS therefore I went to Device Manager -- the Properties of the USB Root Hub (xHCI) <Fresco Logic USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller (Microsoft) which the MS generic driver for the CP-4PTU and unchecked Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power and it seems to have worked in terms of dropping the USB devices upon Windows 8.1 boot ... sooo far. I will report later.

I ran over this issue when i converted my machine to dual-boot (windows 7 / windows 8.1). Whenever i booted into windows 8.1 from the graphical dual-boot screen, the mouse would not work. The mouse was actually not available under the dual-boot screen, i had to navigate with the cursor keys and select the O/S by pressing "Enter". My keyboard was not USB, therefore it was not affected.

I tried most workarounds but nothing helped. Here's how i finally solved it:

1/ Attached a second USB mouse to the machine (strangely the 1st mouse did not work but the 2nd one was recognized and worked). You can also try this with a second keyboard if it is also affected!

2/ Right-click on This PC > Manage > Device Manager and check under "Universal Serial Bus Controllers". One of the host controllers is marked as malfunctioning (with an exclamation mark icon).

3/ Right click on it and select  "uninstall". Don't worry, after a reboot the driver will reinstall successfully.

4/ Reboot and everything works fine.

Hope this helps!

I was able to fix it by going Advance Settings, Virtual Memory and allocating a manual virtual memory. Windows 8.1 allocated 100% of the virtual memory for performance.
January 18th, 2014 1:14pm

I had no such problems from new machine in Jan 2013.

As a matter of principle I don't allow windows to update whenever it likes.

After I updated manually in Dec 2013 (a few months after the previous update), the problem started with the mouse. It randomly freezes. Usually it's when the PC goes to sleep but sometimes before that, just if you haven't done anything for 20 minutes. It is ALWAYS cured by unplugging and replugging into the USB port.

And yes I have the USB Hub Power Management "Allow the computer to turn off this device..." UNchecked. The Usual Suspects are Microsoft - either some recent Windows Update, or the dreaded Automatic Update which CANNOT BE TURNED OFF.

Hi

Figured out how to fix this error if anyone is interested.

It is a bad Upperfilter setting in the registry.

To repair this error:

1) go to C:\Windows\System32\Regedit32.exe

2) Click on Edit -> Find

3) Type in kbdclass (be inventive here as I know you cant type. Copy this name from c:\windows\system32\drivers\kbdclass.sys - right click and click rename. Then just copy the 'kbdclass' - this can then be pasted in the regedit box)

4) Search through for as many Upperfilters you can find.

5) They most likely have 2 lots of drivers associated with it eg 'tphclhs kbdclass'

6) Double click the 'Upperfilter' and delete the other entry except 'kbdclass'

7) Search for all instances of this and change them

8) Go to device manager and uninstall your keyboard - then 'scan for hardware changes'

9) You will most likely need to restart

Keyboard should now be working fine.

I actually surprised myself in solving the error - as you normally delete the upper and lower filters for CD-Roms when they have the error code 39 - so I guess it would work for all devices that have upperfilters.

Worked for me so hope it works for you too.

Best of luck

Bas

Cheers, it's also on Lenovo Flex 15. Any fix? New driver?

Why is this marked as an Answer when the user clearly states it is working in Ubuntu environment?  We can phone a below average computer company and be told it is a hardware issue or to do a reboot or use a different mouse.  People end up at Technet because they can mostly do the basic run around things.

Windows 8.0 and 8.1 since the RC.  USB mouse and Keyboard plugged into USB2 slots on ASUS Motherboard.

A few weeks back keyboard stopped working prior to putting my PIN in.  Waiting 30 minutes makes no difference BUT restarting machine does work.  Don't need to do anything special, just simply reboot and it works.

Tried with ANANSI keyboard (usual) and also Microsoft Wireless 800 purchased 1 week ago, that doesn't work either.  HID Drivers have been uninstalled and that doesn't work.  You can use the onscreen keyboard to log in and then the keyboard works immediately.

We're seeing this issue quite a bit at the moment probably due to recent updates. Here's what works for us:

Plug the USB mouse+k/b into a fairly new external USB hub to get the devices working so you can login.

Right click my computer and go into device manager

update the USB host controller driver (bottom of the list - they probably have an alert triangle).

Right click & select update driver -> browse my computer for files -> let me pick from list -> select the standard universal PCI to USB host controller.

Click close when finished and repeat for each device with an alert.

Now unplug the hub and put your devices back into their original USB ports. This has worked on all our machines with issues so far.

Worked for me.

I just got a new SSD and installed windows from scratch. The one thing I noticed is that it boots in a few seconds. I also started having problems with my keyboard not working on boot. I suspected it was a timing issue with my USB as my mouse and keyboard worked in the BIOS. I have a ton of different settings in the BIOS for USB boot, timing, hand-offs, etc. but didn't change them because I don't like changing things in the BIOS that I don't know what they are. So when I saw this, I tried it since I suspected it was a USB thing anyway and it appears to have worked. I'm guessing that start value changes some of the timing of loading USB devices and I have a special keyboard on my MSI GT70 that is probably connected via USB.

I tried plugging in the KB to a hub.  I tried EVERYTHING, and I can't get past the sign-in screen because the keyboard doesn't work!  So I can't get to the "MY Computer" screen."  Tried Wireless KB, tried wired KB, tried plugging into a hub, etc. etc., This just started happening today.  Have tried restarting. Have tried shutting down the machine and plugging in the KB after in powers on.

Well, after working on it for several hours, I "solved" the problem by turning on the ON-SCREEN-KEYBOARD (via Ease-of-Access), an then shrinking it to the taskbar.  I don't need to actually use the OSK, just have it turned on. A fix for this would be really appreciated as I have to tun on the OSK just to sign in.

I'm sorry, but this advice is worse than useless! What was said was "it works on the bios MENUS and even the mouse works on temporary Ubuntu environment which i booted from a disk." The mouse is WORKING, therefore, in Linux. Why don't you read the post before you try to send a message that basically says "it isn't Microsoft's fault"? - It IS Microsoft's fault. Windows 8 is so flaky it should never have been released, and now they have the temerity to chargw for 8.1.

Gary, you are a genius! THANK YOU! I got a new Windows 8.1 tablet two days ago. While I was getting used to it I went and turned on the filter key option to eliminate inadvertent double keying with the on-screen keyboard. THIS SETTING COPIED ITSELF TO MY LAPTOP VIA MY WINDOWS ACCOUNT and suddenly my laptop keyboard stopped working within Windows. It worked outside Windows like most here describe. The MSI support rep told me my only option was a complete factory restore (of course) but I knew it had to be something stupid/simple. Again, thank you very much!

now again after a week the keyboard/mouse doesn't work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Check out Chesapeak's tips about changing the USB ports and removing the USB controllers.  I wish that this information had registered on me when I had read it before.  Rereading the whole thread has made me realize that the same problem just happened to me last week on my Surface RT but in a slightly different way.

In my case, I had been working with an update impending and stupidly ignored it.  So, a bit too late I came back to my machine and found it powered off and unstartable.  In order to get it working again I had to unplug my powered USB Hub and then plug in just my USB wireless receiver for my mouse and keyboard.  Then I had to figure out why my USB hub had suddenly become a problem.  Every time I plugged it back in W8.1 RT rejected it.  Not even disconnecting the power and waiting a while to try to reset it made it acceptable.  Then (elsewhere) I found tips about removing the USB hubs and USB controllers in Device Manager.  I removed them all and then powered everything off to reset and powered it back up but without the USB hub.  I had read the suggestion that it might be better to let the OS discover the "new" hardware when it was running, not at boot time.  Then I replugged the way that it had been working and everything was finally back to normal.  Whew!  (But I was cursing updates all the while I was researching and testing this "solution".  WTH happened?)

This was the solution I needed.  Thanks, Matt_20!  The keyboard stopped responding on a new desktop which came with Win 8 (or 8.1?) in November2013.  I had been tweaking settings for my dad when the keyboard issue arose.  First got a new set of batteries (easiest fix), but it wasn't that.  Turns out that I had to set the filter keys back off to get the keyboard working again. We'll just take our chances on repeat keys...

SOLUTION YOU WOULDN'T EVEN CONSIDERED IN A MILLION YEARS, BUT IT WORKS PERFECTLY!

This same problem got me crazy while i was installing Window 7 at a new 4TB HDD. If I had a gun on hand, I probably would have shot someone just to feel a little bit better. I was so frustrated I have tried everything and anything that you could possibly imagine, plunging & unplugging million times, setting BIOS USB legacy "ON" / "OFF" million times, restarting the computer two million times, updating BIOS, using PS2 mouse / keyboard, using brand new mouse and keyboard, re-installing Window. THEY ALL FAIL!

I read every forum that I could possibility find on the internet, same suggestions over and over again, some even go extra length to remotely control their PC and change or delete some software setting or coding, so complex that I don't even know what they are doing, I doubt if they do either. And somehow after hours of reading those forum, NO ONE - I MEAN NO ONE ON THIS PLANET EARTH could possibly answer this seemingly simple enough question directly, just for the malfunction of a little mouse and a keyboard. (which may be the simplest component on a desktop except for the little CPU fan or LED light i guess:) Not even those computer geeks or IT engineering, everybody just "Guess", guessing what the problem was and making suggestions.

This so often asked question found on the internet and no one have ever solved it and gave a directly answer ?
I don't even need an explanation, just a solution to this stupid problem, still but i can't find one!

Frustrated enough, I stared at the light of the mother board which was still on while I had already given up and switched off the computer. Something suddenly hit my mind, an idea, a strange idea that probably not even making any sense to anybody, but it came up. " What if I turn off the POWER of the power adapter as well, wait until the light of the mother board goes out and restart to see what happen? But lets be honest, it doesn't matter right? What difference does that make between keeping the adapter power on or off with the malfunction USB port or mouse or keyboard ? On top of that, it wasn't even a hardware problem anyway, those mouse and keyboard just work perfectly fine with other laptops or desktop except this stupid one ! As the title already said "Mouse and Keyboard work in Bios, wont work in Windows" The malfunction must has everything to do with bugs of window or software or BIOS or anything beside this ! "

Well, it doesn't cost me anything to try, fxxk it, lets do it ! At that time, the installation process of Window 7 was almost completed except the last step - entering the key. But you know, after (but not before) the stupid BIOS screen, when it hit the Window screen, everything stopped working, every time, every single time BUT NOT THIS TIME. Holy cow ! What the heck is going on ? After all those logical and reasonable trials suggested by everyone, it all came down to THIS ONE ? Are you kidding me ? Trust me, both the mouse and keyboard did not work during million times of trial and it worked right away after this one. I was like discovering the ultimate formula to cue Cancer you know. It is just amazing!

Frankly speaking, I just have basic PC knowledge and I don't know why this works or how this works, BUT IT WORKS! My "guess" is: the power adapter and  the mother board seems to have some sort of voltage or current problem which makes the USB ports not working with any USB devices. Power supply is fine, but those device just do not work properly, maybe the current is too large or something which interfere with the programs or common softwares which pre-installed at Window for basic components like mouse or keyboard to work. Another guess is: the mother board seems to have some kind of memory of something, once those mouse and keyboard malfunction for the first time, it doesn't matter how many time you plug or unplug them, the problem just stay put. I noticed that the light of the keyboard is still on after the Window screen, and one time, i continuously pressing the "Cabs" button again and again during those switching screen to see when it failed. After the Window screen started, the Cabs LED light had been switched on just in time so it didn't go off. After I unplugged the keyboard and plugged in again, the Cabs LED light was still on, as if I haven't unplug it at all, time and time again. Logically, it should have turned off after I unplugged and plugged in again, maybe just the "Num" LED light on, but not the "Cabs" LED light. It's as if there is a memory of the same error somewhere saved within the desktop.

There you go, THIS IS IT ! THIS IS THE ANSWER ! If you do enjoy this story, I know you are pretty messed up and frustrated by this problem too. That's why I am here right now, just to release the pain and also help any one who is tortured by this stupid problem and looking for AN ANSWER.

If some IT or computer genius could tell me what is really happening underneath, I would be very much appreciated!

Sincerely,
Little Joey from Hong Kong

After putting up with this for 3 weeks, and searching the Microsoft blogs for hours, I was very happy to see this posting from Gary! This solution worked for me also, but I had a little trouble finding it on Windows 8.1 update 1 and all the current updates to date, as described below:

1. Go to "Settings", then "Control Panel" and then "Ease of Access Center"

2. Important - there is an administrator link that says "Change Sign-In Settings". You must select this or you will not be able to change the settings!

3. Select "Adjust settings for the keyboard" and then un-check "Turn on toggle keys" and "Turn on filter keys".

Save your settings and problem solved.

Thanks again Gary.

I had the same issue with my USB mouse after an update and here's what I did to fix it. What I found was that for some reason the update disabled a couple of items labeled "Generic Root Hub" under the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" tab in Device Manager.

Step 1: Get your mouse pointer back and control it with the keyboard.

To do this Hit "Shift" "ALT" and "Num Lock."

A box will pop up asking, "Do you want to turn on mouse keys?"

Hit "Alt and "Y" for Yes.

You can now move your mouse pointer using the number pad.  The center key (#5) can be used as a mouse clicker.

Step 2: Open Device Manager.

Hit the "Windows Key" and "X".

A list of options including "Device Manager" should pop up.

Select the letter "M" for Device Manager.

Step 3: Enable USB Controllers.

Use your mouse cursor via the Number pad controls to scroll down to the bottom where the USB devices are listed and enable any items that have been disabled.  Again, use the #5 key on your number pad like you would a mouse clicker to open tabs and make selections.

In my case when I enabled the second "Generic Root Hub" I instantly got my USB mouse back.

Thanks Melting Clock,

This info got me on the right path to resolving my issue.  As is the case with many others here, I was unable to use keyboard or mouse after a restart of my Dell XPS.  Fortunately, I was able to use the touch screen of my monitor to navigate the system.  Then it occurred to me that the mechanism to send keystrokes from the monitor's touch screen might also send them from a keyboard attached to the monitor's USB port, so I plugged the keyboard and mouse into the monitor and (to my surprise) they both worked.

But I was still not satisfied that the keyboard and mouse would not work if plugged into the USB ports on the PC, so I kept reading this thread and when I read about checking the device manager, I did so and found that a USB controller:

Intel(R) 7 Series/C216 Chipset Family USB Enhanced Host Controller

had somehow been disabled.  I just enabled it and everything was back to normal.

Here is what I did to fix this problem:

1. When the machine is turning on and the dots are going around in circles.  I turned off the machine to force it into repair mode.  I then selected Start UP Repair.  It took an hour but the mouse and keyboard came back.

I have the same problem. After an automatic update my computer rebooted and the keyboard and mouse stopped working. They work fine on any other computer. I enjoy reading that you should go to this or that setting in windows when it should be obvious that no keyboard and/or mouse = you can't log in at all. Now what? I guess this was a security update.

Please read the post a little more carefully. They stated their mouse did work in Linux. The reference to temporary is because it was run off some sort of portable media as a temporary hardware check.

Find another port or another device.  E.g. in my case I pulled my wireless receiver from my hub and plugged it into my Tablet directly.  However, for my final fix I just used Touch to make sure that all connections would be made fresh while the OS was running.  So I could have used Touch if relocating my wireless receiver had not worked.  Someone else mentioned that their fingerprint reader was still working so that got them past the login.   <eg>

The above suggestion worked for me when my keyboard stopped working in Windows 8.1.

Here's what I did:

1. Bring up the charms bar by positioning your mouse in the lower right hand corner of the screen.

2. Click on settings.

3. Select "Ease of Access".

4. Select "Make Keyboard Easier to Use".

5. Scroll down. Near the bottom of the page look for "Turn on Filter Keys".

6. Uncheck the box next to "Turn on Filter Keys".

7. Hit "Apply".

My keyboard started working as it should. I rebooted the computer just to be sure the changes I had made would be retained...much to my delight, after four hours of researching the problem, my keyboard still worked!

There are two solutions.

Buy a cheap cable which have on side with usb port and other with ps2 port.

Other one is to cut the ps2port and attached usb.

Ps2 and usb wires names and colours.

There's definitely a Windows 8.1 system/driver defect here.

Following a Windows Update pushed out on August 19, 2014, my Lenovo W520 built-in keyboard (using the standard PS/2 Keyboard driver) stopped working. It works for a few seconds after login then shuts down. Every single option on this thread (from checking filter keys to disabling fast startup) failed to remedy it.

I've rolled back the update using a system restore and things seem to be working again (but only time will tell). External mouse and keyboard work as normal.

I believe both updates related to Office (KB2883058/KB2883052)... Left with no choice but to disable auto-updates and see if this is remedied in future patches.

After trying 3 different brands of mice, one of which was wireless, I can tell you for certainty that it is NOT a hardware issue.  Try again.

I am experiencing similar issue with using a mouse with windows 8.   I have been using mouse with no problem on the windows 8 laptop (have had for about 4 months), until recently I set up a Microsoft windows account.   After that point the mouse does not work correctly.   I am a very minimal user, all I want is a PC, not interested in the apps, etc.   I signed out of the Microsoft account, however that did not correct the issue with the mouse.   In looking at other comments, it appears this is a common problem.  Could it be related to the Microsoft account?   Very frustrating.

Just had the same problem happen to me on my laptop after an upgrade this morning.

I had to go to the Device Manager, and roll back the setting of the Mouse to a PS2.  Once I did that, the mouse and keyboard worked fine.  A new driver was installed for the mouse on the update which made it crash.

August 28th, 2014 7:41pm

I had the same issue on my Gateway DX70 PC running win 8.1 after auto-update from Microsoft. I solved the problem by plugging in an old PS/2 keyboard and mouse. Upon reboot, the PS/2 mouse and keyboard worked as expected. I did a system restore and re-engaged my wireless mouse and keyboard and everything worked fine from that point. Until I found this solution, I almost gave up. I had my windows 8 ISO disk in my PC last night as I had spent all of yesterday trying the various solutions written in this forum with no success. I was ready to re-install win 8. But decided to wait until the next morning to do so.

I awoke this morning and came to the conclusion that the aforementioned update somehow disabled the driver for the USB connection to my wireless keyboard and mouse. That's when I employed the PS/2 mouse/keyboard solution. Against Microsoft wishes, I have now disabled automatic updates and from this point forward i will install them manually after checking to see if there were/are any issues with the update that could cause problems. What ticks me and everyone else off about this issue is the fact the Microsoft doesn't acknowledge that the update may be and probably is causing this issue.

I am having the exact same problem with my Lenovo keyboard, it seems like when I turn it on the keyboard is unresponsive and I'm stuck with the touch keyboard- and then at completely random time the actual keyboard and mouse begin working perfectly fine again. However I see no correlation between When my actual keyboard begins working and what I'm doing at the time to find a reasonable answer or solution as to why the keyboard started working at that sudden moment as opposed to all the time, when I restart my computer, etc. I do not have a solution that could help you, but I just want to let you know I'm going through the exact same situation and I understand how frustrating it is. I use my computer mainly to do schoolwork online, and I know how frustrating it is when you're real keyboard isn't working when you need to be working. At this point I've spent more time and energy searching online for solutions or fiddling with the settings on my computer than actually putting that time into doing schoolwork. It's getting to the point where I'm considering just using my old laptop because I cannot do my schoolwork the way I want to and I definitely cannot write long, thorough, detailed essays and papers with just a touch screen and an unreliable keyboard that may or may not begin working at certain times and then shut down again. I'm sorry I don't have any solutions, but hopefully our posts will be seen and a solution will be provided for us as quickly as possible. You seem to be much more aware of when and why your keyboard will stop/start working, and I just wanted to ask you if you have any key pieces of information, tips, or any advice at all to help me until a permanent solution can be found and we can move on with our lives without this hassle ha ha. Thank you have a great day. :)

I had the same problem! After days of talking to experts, having them remotely "supposedly" fixing the problem, I found a simple solution.  I was using the F5 button to refresh, and found out in Window8 it turns off the mouse and keypad.  Nothing works but the touch screen.  Just hit F5 a second time and it works.  Haven't had another problem for months.

I have come across this before with Windows 8 and newer BIOS's and it is usually a driver problem. If you pop into the BIOS and look at the USB options, set the ports to USB2 that should get you running again. You can leave it like this up upgrade the USB drivers now your keyboard/mouse work and then flip the USB settings back to USB3.

Just reporting that I had the same issue, keyboard and mouse would only work at every other boot while using  Windows 8, always worked in the bios though. Upgraded to Windows 10 and the problem got much worse.

Eventually discovered that Hyper-V was causing it for me, uninstalled it using the "turn features on or off" section within Programs and Features, now working correctly on every boot. Also heard that going into the bios and disabling USB legacy support fixes it for some people.
