Windows 8 File copy bug

Hello,

I  installed a brand new copy of Windows 8 today, and i have tried to copy some files from my Phone to my harddisk. But it frequently fails, the copy speed drops down to 0 bytes per second and nothing gets copied. I copied the same files on another pc flawlessly. So this should be a bug in windows 8. If anyone has a fix for this stupid bug, please let me know.

It's not a bug since it works fine here. Something on the PC might be causing this. Open the Task Manager and see if any process is having high CPU usage.

I don't think that's enough evidence to prove this isn't a bug.  I've seen a similar situation - copy from a network share to a local disk slows down to nothing.  It worked ok after a reboot.  Whether this is a Win 8 bug or a problem with an older network driver remains to be seen...

Uninstall all USB controllers from Device Manager and restart. The drivers will be reloaded. Then try again.

Tried that. Tried updating my network drivers on both the server and the PC. Tried re-installing the drivers on the server and the PC. I get the SAME results as the others here have indicated. It will work for a little bit then drop off completely - it shouldn't take 2 days ( gave up after waiting 2 days ) to copy 1.5 GB's off a network server share. I can do it in 80 minutes on my Windows 7 workstations but the windows 8 workstations, ALL OF THEM, drop off to ZERO bytes / sec and nothing will ever get copied. I can do it in 60 minutes on my Ubuntu workstations.

Clearly something is WRONG with the Windows 8 copy process.

The same issue here. My pc is new so i thought that it's a hardware (wireless connection) problem. so i tried some new wireless drivers but nothing changed. I called the DELL support center and he also offered me to update drivers. And then he offered to try the copying in safe mode and no problem out there. It's surprising for me.

We bought two same laptops and the other laptop doesn't have that problem.

Now I'll format and watch if same issue occurs. If then DELL will help me to do some hardware work.

I found that. It's about my nokia connection software. Uninstalled it and now file copy is so fast and do not freeze.

Dell didn't help me about that. As i mentioned before there was no problem in safe mode. So i compared the services in safe mode and normal mode. Then in normal mode i see that if i stop the bluetooth services and disable-enable wireless adapter then everything is ok.

I have exactly the same problem on my Lenovo X1 Carbon. Copying files is a nightmare on Windows 8!

A similar problem - copying files from a Win 8 PC to a LAN-based server location by holding CTRL key results in exactly the same issues as above. I lose all access to wired LAN network and have to power down and restart PC.
However, copying using CTRL C, CTRL V works OK. Nasty problem...

Hi

I have exactly the same issue on my new Windows 8 vaio laptop. This has nothing to do with networking or usb drives. This happens also on local C: drive. I try to copy lot's of files, around 50 gigs, the file copy randomly slows down to zero and the copy dialog will stuck, you can't cancel or stop the copy. Definitely a bug in windows 8. You can reproduce this more easily if you open the source folder in explorer and the destination folder to another explorer view, then select the folder with lots of files and right click drag the folder to the other explorer window and release, then choose copy or move. Now when the copy is ongoing, hide both of the explorer windows, the source and destination. It immediately stops copying, the speed slows down to 0 and gets stuck forever.

I am having a similar problem, but for me it seems to be related to copying symbolic links and junctions.

Me too with Win 8.1 Enterprise  -behaves the same whether to another drive or over the network or just moving to another directory if I move say 80gigs. I wonder if permissions has something to do with it? Anyone got an answer?
