Windows 8 Desktop Mode Apps have no access to internet

there have been other threads with similar issues. Not a guaranteed fix but you might try disabling the firewall in your DSL/Cable Modem. It appears Win8 is using a new port that is not open by default on many devices.

I've also seen the following as a solutonn: open a command prompt and type: netsh winsock reset

Hope that helps!

I've seen a couple people ask questions about their browsers not working in desktop mode for Windows 8, and none of them were answered.   I've got the same problem with mine, however it's any application that runs in desktop mode.

Problem:  NO application running desktop mode has internet, games, browsers, chat programs...nothing.

History:

-Was running Windows 7 Ultimate and upgraded to Windows 8, choosing to migrate over all my applications files and personal settings.

-Metro style apps and browsers have no problems accessing the internet

Attempts:

-attempted to reset IE 10 Desktop mode to all default settings, clearing browser cache, SSL slate, and resetting to default.

-attempted to reinstall chrome.

-running CMD prompt in desktop mode, able to ping and use DNS as normal

-Windows 8 defender is disabled, running MS Forefront for AV.

-forcibly set my adapter DNS to a google dns 8.8.8.8

Any idea's what to try next?

hi there rebirth16 i had the exact same problem upgraded from windows 7 64bit to windows 8 pro and my desktop apps would not connect to the internet but the apps on metro did :-s. (strange) i upgraded with all my software and personal files intact im not sure but some setting or some program caused the internet on the desktop to not connect. after a day of going through the pc my solution was to reinstal windows 8 but selected for it to just keep personal files i.e music pictures videos but not software after that the finished the internet worked perfect well happy now down side you need to reintal your programs but this is the only way i could fix it.

Thank you!   Performing a netsh winsock reset from an elevated command prompt worked.

Figure I might as well throw in my 2 cents

Had the exact same problem, no Desktop apps (avast antivirus, Diablo 3, anything really) had internet access

Performing 'netsh winsock reset' from an elevated command promp and a reboot fixed the problem.

Good thing too because i was considering just going back to 7

Thanks a lot guys!!!! Its a simple solution and has worked perfectly!

Even I was seriously considering to uninstall windows 8

Ran the netsh winsock reset, and rebooted.  Was able to connect to the Internet one time.  When moving to a new tab, got the 'page cannot be displayed' notification.  Everything works fine from the Metro page, am only having this issue on the Desktop version.  I'm pulling an IP, I can ping websites without issue, I just can't pull up any data.  Disabled the firewall, rebooted and was able to access the internet ONE time only again.  Any other thoughts?
