Windows 8.1 won't wake up from sleep

I seem to have the same problem that many have already expressed, the difference is that my laptop (HP ENVY) just started sleeping in, permanently and not waking up. I prefer to have my computer sleep, rather than hibernate (although I'm not clear as to the difference in the two states), and would like to have it return to "obedient" mode and comply with my every command, in this case "sleep" when I close the cover, and "wake" when I return and open the cover.

Any ideas of how to accomplish this?

Does that mean you are using a hard reset to get it going again?  FWIW I think it may be better to try pulling the plug (or battery) instead.  E.g. I have the impression that the firmware communicates a hard reset to the OS, whereas just pulling the plug would only simulate a possible situation (namely power failure) which should be handled as gracefully as possible.  The OS seems to be very unforgiving when it finds out that you have done a hard reset, especially during updates.   <eg>
