Windows 8.1 won't recognize me as the Administrator so I am unable to upgrade or change settings.

I bought a new high end PC with Windows 8.1 (not Pro) about 6 months ago. Yes, it is a genuine copy, I have a working code.

Everything seems to be fine but it is set to not receive any Windows upgrades and when I go to try and change this setting or check for updates, it will not allow me to change the setting saying I am not the Admin. I am the Admin and have an Admin account but it won't recognize this. I tried setting up a new account, and deleting the old to no avail.

I have scoured the internet and discussion groups to try and find the solution. I tried to contact Microsoft but can't reach anyone. Other people online seem to have the same problem but I haven't been able to find a solution.

Help please!

1. Run WHOAMI from command line.

2. Not for all action is being an Administrator enough. Some action should be "Run as Administrator".

3. You can wake up administrator with net user command.

4. Make sure that your operating system is activated Win+Pause/Break

5. Perhaps better forum for this kind of problem is answers.microsoft.com

Hi Phoenix,

Thank you for your question.

I know that Windows 8.1 is set to not receive any Windows update, but we suggest you perform the following steps:

First, Go to Control Panel ---> Programs.  Then under Programs and Features, you'll see a link called "View Installed Updates".  Under Microsoft Windows, scroll until you find KB2871389.  Uninstall it, and then accept the prompt to reboot your computer. Now, login under your account (that has admin privileges) to check if the issue persist.

If there are any questions regarding this issue, please be free to let me know.

Best Regard,

Jim
