Windows 8.1 upgraded then login and black screen
I just upgrade to win 8.1 pro from 8.0 pro. After logout and login. Nothing display. I can only use ctrl-alt-del to start the task manager. And found that "c:\windows\explorer.exe" can't work.

There are error message once I try to explorer something, the message is "can't find the program entree point. ?Createlnt@Value@DirectUI@@SAPEAV12@H@Z(in dynamic link program library C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorerframe.dll).

I have this exact issue after updating 8 to 8.1 Pro x64.  I can also move the mouse cursor.  If I wait 5-6 minutes, it will eventually log in.  This issue occurs after every logout/restart.

I have been fighting with this all day with no luck, but I have been able to make a bit of "progress".

1) Automatic repair failed.

2) No restore point set (I'm an idiot)

3) Changed startup settings to Enable debugging mode

a) This allowed me to load into Windows 8.1 normally for a few minutes.  Then I got a BSOD with a service_thread_exception_not_handled (igdkmd64.sys)

b) This led me to update my on board intel driver.  But that led to more BSOD with no .sys file mentioned

4) I could not update my video card driver because it is not allowed in safe mode.

Nothing loads for me if I leave the black screen and it will not recognize a ctrl-alt-del command.

**EDIT**

I removed all my display drivers but could not load Windows properly.  BUT, it did load when I set the startup settings to Enable debug.  Now I am updating my drivers with no crashes (yet).  Then I will see if it will startup properly.

Utter nightmare.

Like an idiot I did the same thing and upgraded Win8.0 Pro ==> Win8.1 Pro, and all I get is a totally black screen. If I move the mouse the mouse pointer (white arrow) appears for a second or so.

In my case control/alt/delete has no effect to screen. And I cant get F8 nor shift/F8 to work during reboot and so I cant get to boot into safe mode.

How do I uninstall Windows 8.1 ?

I have a Samsung notebook (NP740U3E-S04UK).

From what I have read, it is either the Samsung drivers or the AMD drivers that are at fault.

Any suggestions on how we ever get to know what these problems are finally fixed?

I have had the same Problem. Solution - real, not a joke:

1. Wait 2 Minutes. Power off.

2. Power on. Black Screen appears again. Same procedure... Power off again.

3. Power on. Wait again 5 minutes until nothing happens on the hard disk. Power off.

4. Power on - it's working

Have had tested this during the Audit Mode and this Workaround is working on different PC's ;-)

Hello All,

Does this issue only happen after shutdown?

Can you please try to disable the following setting "Turn on fast startup" from:

I unchecked "Turn on Fast Startup."  This does not resolve the issue.  The issue occurs after logging out, restarting, or shutting down.

Same issue and tried the same solution about turning off fast startup. No luck with that.

Frankly this is ridiculous. My Computer is definitely in no shape to take it to work. If I somehow get a sleep, hibernate, reboot I get black screen. The Computer is reacting though and sometimes there is some millisecond clip when the screen shows. It just seems that it cuts the power from screen and does not return it.

Disable all power saving features even in bios. If already disabled change one like monitor and save, restart, you should solve the black screen, its from power saving bug.

Billy,

How did you try to update the drivers? Did you try updating the drivers from Safe mode? If not please try entering Safe Mode and updating the drivers:

  1.      When you boot your PC, try hitting the F8 key. This may take you to the Startup Settings that include Safe Mode.
  2.      If hitting F8 doesnt work, and you have media for Windows 8.1 (such as a DVD or USB), you can boot from media using the instructions here. Further instructions about Safe Mode can be found here.
  3.      If you do not have media, try restarting your computer three times. This should bring up the Windows Recovery Environment.
  4.      Once you have started in Safe Mode with Networking, check for updated drivers:
  5.      Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
  6.     Tap or click Update and recovery and then tap or click Windows Update.
  7.      Tap or click View details, and tap or click Check for updates. (If you don't see View details, there aren't any optional updates available.)
  8.     Under Optional, tap or click the update that you want to install, then click Install.

If no updated drivers are available through Windows Update, check the website of the manufacturer of your video card to see if they have updated drivers available.

If this does not resolve your issue, please e-mail me @ ankito@microsoft.com

I'll chip in with some additional information and see if that helps, since nobody posted a detailed flow yet.

While I have the same problem as everyone else, I am running on a homebuilt desktop system with a Radeon HD 6850.

In detail, the problem manifests as that the startup proceeds as normal, including loading login screen graphics to past the point where I enter my password. When the prompt changes to "Welcome", the spinning dots animation commences and nothing else happens for about a minute, after which a black screen is loaded. At this point, the mouse pointer still works but not the start button or any normal windows hotkey, except Ctrl-Alt-Delete. Bringing up a Task Manager allows me to start and run programs, but neither starting, shutting down and restarting explorer actually produces any effective result. I can't find any special process running, such as Trouble reporting or similar. IE or desktop programs run fine.

After a few more minutes, maybe three, the desktop or start screen loads as usual, but the start screen is corrupted. Most Modern Apps only display some internal name and no icon, but a few (such as economy and store, for instance) show content in their livetiles. Attempting to start one of the internal name ones, such as mail, yields an error, while starting one with a working livetile opens a blank screen with no possibility to interact. The start screen/Modern UI app problem is persistent.

All desktop applications run as normal.

A few observations and failed troubleshooting attempts:

All available updates were downloaded.

The graphics drivers that were installed with the 8.1 update were 8.13, in other words ancient. Updating to 13.9 or the latest beta 13.11 (both supposedly working with 8.1, and worked fine in the consumer preview) did not help.

Uninstalling the last month of programs did nothing.

The store icon said "Win 8.1 Consumer Preview", but at the actual app page the proper Win 8.1 Pro was displayed.

No other driver conflicts, and no reported logs (Can I log what is happening post-login somehow?).

I had the same problem. Managed to find a temporary fix by installing the previous version of the intel 4000 graphics driver (15.31.9.64.3165). I had to boot into safe mode first ). Now I'm up and running but the intel drivers aren't perfect but working. Microsoft/Intel need to sort this out quick or there are going to get crap over this.

Hi

After a delay of about 7 days I finally received this email today 26-Oct-2013, from Samsung Customer Support (below).

In short Samsung are saying that:
1. They do not support Windows 8.1 (yet)
2. They are blaming Microsoft for all the problems

So, for now the wise money says be patient. What I don't yet know how how we actually find out when Samsung/MS officially declare that they have solved their collect problems.

Thank you for contacting Samsung Customer Support.

I am sorry to hear of the problems you are having with trying to apply the voluntary 8.1 update direct from Microsoft. I can understand the inconveniences that software issues may cause.

Through doing some research online it appears that there are several bugs with the Windows 8.1 upgrade, this is not an issue with your Samsung hardware. I would suggest that reinstall 8.0 onto your hard drive, using the recovery console, until Microsoft releases the bug fixes.

Samsung is not supporting this operating system at present, if you have any software issues please contact Microsoft for further support.

If there is anything else we can help with, please let us know.

No other driver conflicts, and no reported logs (Can I log what is happening post-login somehow?).

You could try using ProcMon for its Boot Logging option.  However, there is also supposedly a trace which is specific to Boot issues.  Do a search for  xperf  xbootmgr   to try to research this possibility.

Good luck

I'm trying to update from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1I have black screen and loading icon, it's about 5 hours. This is the worst Windows Update I've ever seen since I bought MS Dos 3.1.

It's a nightmare. I don't know what to do.

I've tried a few more things, prompted by some googling.

Updating BIOS and Audio drivers. No luck.

Disabling fast startup. No luck.

sfc /scannow. No luck.

Checkdisk. Nope.

Reboot in safe mode. Fast login. This prompted some more troubleshooting, first disabling all autorun with no success, then disabling all services causing a prompt login. Tried a few unique semi-randomly, but no luck on finding the specific one(s).

Enabled (in msconfig, for the curious) ntbtlog, comparing the results from the safe mode login to the "normal and unusually delayed", finding that there's a few entries of:

BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\System32\drivers\dxgkrnl.sys

and then one of:

BOOTLOG_NOT_LOADED \SystemRoot\system32\drivers\WdFilter.sys

The first is the DirectX-kernel, sounds suspicious, the second has to to with the malware scanner.

Did some more googling on these entries, and it turns out the first is fairly commonly associated with slow startups. One mentioned something which sounds like dxgkrnl trying to boot up multiple times, which seems like what was indicated in the ntbtlog.txt.

Enough for now, but will try to find some time stamps in the bootlog to verify the theory and do a bubble search on the services to try and find the offender.

Note: With the services disabled and no black screen (still a bit delay at the "Welcome"), metro apps were still broken. Seems like some windows Component is broken...

Wish I had the answer, but....  I just did a fresh install of 8.1.  All went well.  However, I've tried to add my wife (who has a Microsoft Account) as an additional user, and after everything set up I get the black screen (with Mouse pointer) mentioned here.  I can get to Task Manager, and I can switch back to my original log in (which still works fine), but the second user is presented with a black screen.

Same issue. Super reliable windows 8.0 Samsung 9 plus now has display problems, screen blanking and is unusable!
November 4th, 2013 12:44pm

I have tried a number of further ideas, with mixed success. However, first let's report on the partial success: I found the offending service. App Readiness will, when disabled, remove the blackscreen issue and return login times to normal.

However, the greater problem remains, which is that the ModernUI apps do not and will not work. Once having it narrowed down to Apps, I did some further snooping around and found that this is a relatively common problem since Windows 8 and there are multiple reports including some lists of remedies to try. One of these is this one: http://www.eightforums.com/tutorials/21051-apps-tiles-not-working-responding-fix-windows-8-a.htmlin which the comments also include a recent occurance where the listed actions won't help. And neither did they help for me.

The comments here also suggest a cause: CCleaner having removed some registry entry which it shouldn't have. I have run CCleaner, so that might be true. However it tells us nothing on how to proceed, except with a refresh/reset/reinstall.

While I don't like to give up, I am running out of ideas here, so I tried to do a refresh. That is not possible, though, since upgrading to 8.1 through the store boinks your recovery. Using a googled workaround to create a new recovery partition, I proceeded to try with a refresh. Of course, that is only available through the (unavailable) ModernUI interface, but you can also access it with Shutdown.exe /o /r.

However, refresh was unable to refresh my computer, for unknown reasons. I am discinclined to "just reinstall", since I come from an upgraded Windows 7 and would rather not do 3 instlls for the sake of troubleshooting. Microsoft? Anyone? Ideas?

November 6th, 2013 2:06am

Couldn't help myself, looked at it some more. Turns out there are a lot of entries in the logviewer under apps. Different apps have a variety of error codes, which include "could not update the panel", "Could not draw the panel" and along the line of this "Activation of the app microsoft.microsoftskydrive_8wekyb3d8bbwe!Microsoft.MicrosoftSkyDrive for the Windows.Launch contract failed with error: The app didn't start."

Searching suggested this had something to do with All_program_packages rights, or group policies (if connected to a domain), but following the knowledge base article didn't help. While the "user" didn't have appropriate rights to the user folder and subfolders, changing this didn't help (and should be quite an iffy change, apps don't need those rights).

Most articles have users who experience this problem as domain users, though I am not. Neither should there be any group policies. I do connect using a Microsoft account (one poster suggests that filling out the entire profile makes the problem go away), and others that a local account doesn't have the issues. Indeed, a local account has different results but still can't launch apps properly (met with a blankscreen instead of an error message, still log entries). Refreshing Windows Store was suggested, but this does not work, the app cannot launch and suggests a refresh - which is still unable to do any changes.

So something is set (or was removed) during the upgrade which affects app privileges. No clue what, and still can't reinstall in an efficient way.

November 6th, 2013 12:44pm

Found this.  It fixed my App Store and PC Settings problem but I still get the 5 min black login window after login before Metro will load.  Also, I ran sfc /scannow multiple times before running the powershell scripts below.  sfc repaired multiple issues before it ran clear.

Hope it helps.

sry ankito, but did you read a thread carefully? Or much more threads concerned to this issue? Everyone tried update drivers. But how can you update when most of users can not boot OS?

today i tried a hint with master boor repair. Bullshit. Microsoft obviously doesnt know what to do. Its a OS matter and you should release update patch a.s.a.p otherwice apple or linux will get even more clients then this crappy spy Os like Win 8.1. Btw. Why do you stop support for such a stable and good running os like Win XP? This user-beta-tester-experience make you very hard explain why more then 35% of world population shall upgrade to win 8.

rolyguy7's contribution did help to some extent, following the blog steps did give me access to the control panel and the store. However, no other app than those explicitly granted privileges managed to start, and windows store cannot install apps (still some licence error). Perhaps I should add that yes, it is a valid licence, an upgrade from a valid win 7.

At least with disabling the App Readiness service and booting to desktop as well as the blog fixes which restored the immersive control panel win 8.1 behaves like a functional OS, if gimped.

All too quickly these errors end up with "reinstall windows and forget about it", much the same as other licence errors. If I could get and use a clean win 8.1 install or would be able to use refresh/reset that'd be an option, but...

one thing you can do is try a repair install the only way to do that though is in windows but don't fret if you get a blank screen with a cursor wait a minute then hit cntrl alt del  and you should get the task manager click file then run type E:\ or whatever your drive letter is and it will open a window you can then click setup and do a repair with no data loss good luck idk if that will help you but it could give you a chance to update before errors

Also had STARTISBACK that caused the problem when going from 8.0 to 8.1. Black screen, but I could start TASK MANAGER with <CTRL> + <ALT> <DEL>. This how I did it (you prolly dont need to go into safe mode).
(I have Swedish Windows so sry for any wrong translations, but I think youll get the point)

(0). If you want SAFE MODE and cant go into boot menu(SSD) like me:
                 1. <CTRL> + <ALT> <DEL>
   2. HOLD SHIFT + click REBOOT
                 3. Choose to how you want to start windows...yada yada .. choose (safe mode) with function                             keys

1. <CTRL> + <ALT> <DEL>
2. Click Archive?(menu option furthes to the left) and <Start new activity>. Write <cmd.exe>
