Windows 8.1 upgraded then login and black screen
I just upgrade to win 8.1 pro from 8.0 pro. After logout and login. Nothing display. I can only use ctrl-alt-del to start the task manager. And found that "c:\windows\explorer.exe" can't work.

There are error message once I try to explorer something, the message is "can't find the program entree point. ?Createlnt@Value@DirectUI@@SAPEAV12@H@Z(in dynamic link program library C:\WINDOWS\system32\explorerframe.dll).

I have this exact issue after updating 8 to 8.1.  If I wait 5-6 minutes, it will eventually log in.  This issue occurs after every logout/restart.

I am having the same issue. If I wait long enough, my desktop will appear, but when I go in to Metro, most of my programs (tiles? apps?) are unavailable or show an error.

Same issue as everyone described , win x64 Pro.

Though I can launch iexplore as well, for instance.

In Another, most likely unrelated, error all my Pictures have also been removed on upgrade.

Same exact issue. I've tried a few things but still no luck. Maybe a refresh is the only option?....

Yep, confirmed the same here, except that my mouse no longer works as well.

I have been fighting with this all day with no luck, but I have been able to make a bit of "progress".

1) Automatic repair failed.

2) No restore point set (I'm an idiot)

3) Changed startup settings to Enable debugging mode

a) This allowed me to load into Windows 8.1 normally for a few minutes.  Then I got a BSOD with a service_thread_exception_not_handled (igdkmd64.sys)

b) This led me to update my on board intel driver.  But that led to more BSOD with no .sys file mentioned

4) I could not update my video card driver because it is not allowed in safe mode.

Nothing loads for me if I leave the black screen and it will not recognize a ctrl-alt-del command.

**EDIT**

I removed all my display drivers but could not load Windows properly.  BUT, it did load when I set the startup settings to Enable debug.  Now I am updating my drivers with no crashes (yet).  Then I will see if it will startup properly.

Just the kind of results I've grown to expect from a new ms release. End users become beta testers.

Having same issue here...Where is the support?

I assume that since this is just the forum, a response will be delayed.  However, I could not find anything in the support section.  I checked some other sites as well and nothing.  I just registered on technet after lurking for years so this may be a stupid question but does the support section actually provided decent support?

I have the same problem. I just upgraded from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and I'm very disappointed. I need to run cmd.exe (with administrator rights) via task manager and type sfc /scannow and then run explorer.exe just to get a temporary explorer and everything is fine until I restart my laptop and the new session lasts for 5-10 minutes and then it signs me out again. I'm searching through other resources to find a solution but can't find anything.

We need support here from Microsoft to identify the problem. I also updated my graphic card drivers and get the latest updates from Windows Update. Maybe it has something to do with the apps compatibility, but don't know which app may causes the problem.

We would be very grateful if someone from Microsoft support identifies the problem. We should not have such unpleasant upgrade experiences.

Thank you.

I had the same problem. Managed to find a temporary fix by installing the previous version of the intel 4000 graphics driver (15.31.9.64.3165). I had to boot into safe mode first ). Now I'm up and running but the intel drivers aren't perfect but working. Microsoft/Intel need to sort this out quick or there are going to get crap over this.

I had a similar problem, for me it was having old version a Start Menu replacement installed. I was able to fix the problem by 1. Running cmd 2. Using cmd to start FIREFOX 3. Downloading new version of StartIsBack and installing it After that I was good to go

Utter nightmare.

Like an idiot I did the same thing and upgraded Win8.0 Pro ==> Win8.1 Pro, and all I get is a totally black screen. If I move the mouse the mouse pointer (white arrow) appears for a second or so.

In my case control/alt/delete has no effect to screen. And I cant get F8 nor shift/F8 to work during reboot and so I cant get to boot into safe mode.

How do I uninstall Windows 8.1 ?

My hardware: a new Samsung Series 7 Ultra Notebook 128GB SSD 13.3"  Model:  NP740U3E-S04UK.

Thanks

If you can see a pointer it is a blank screen, not totally black.

That may be good news.  For example, some find that the OS is inexplicably switching to a phantom monitor and putting the lock screen, Ctrl-Alt-Delete response, etc. there, not where you can see it.

Then what you can try is assuming what your keystrokes are generating and acting as if you could see it.   E.g. in the case of Ctrl-Alt-Delete press End and Enter to launch Task Manager.  Then you could press Alt-Space M and CursorRight.   Then drag it onto the screen you can see.

In these cases, it may help to attach a second monitor and see if your symptom is any clearer that way.   ; )

Good luck

FWIW, after a vast amount of pain, I have finally managed to restore my entire hard drive from a disk image I took of my C: drive a couple of hours ago using a free version of Macrium Reflect. So in effect I have have uninstalled Window 8.1. UTTER nightmare.

Lessons learnt:

1. Dont just trust that the big names will deliver quality software (e.g. Samsung and Microsoft) - always check forums for complaints and problems before installing new updates.

2. Avoid the "bleeding edge" of technology - let other people do the beta testing for you  and never do updates too  quickly.

3. Always plan you escape routes. Take regular archives and backups.

I have the same problem with my Samsung NP680Z5E. I did not have any issues with Windows 8 previous to the upgrade to 8.1.

I did the Windows update to make sure it had the latest updates, rebooted and then downloaded 8.1.

It took a while for it to download and install, rebooted a few times, then prompted me for my password for my account, then asked me a bunch of questions regarding settings. Then rebooted to the black screen.

To be specific, it reboots and displays a black screen. If I touch the track pad (or touch the screen) the arrow pointer displays with a animated circle. But nothing else happens and it does not respond to keyboard commands (Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Windows X, Windows -S).

I am also unable to get into recovery or Safe Mode using Shift F* at start up, no matter how many times I have tried.

A very poor upgrade indeed. Obviously it is a MAJOR issue with the amount of topics created on multiple boards, and from what I can find, ZERO response from Microsoft.

To be specific, it reboots and displays a black screen. If I touch the track pad (or touch the screen) the arrow pointer displays with a animated circle. But nothing else happens and it does not respond to keyboard commands (Ctrl-Alt-Delete, Windows X, Windows -S).

Think about what would you expect it to be showing you then.  As I indicated, I think the only keyboard command which would work easily in the normally expected state (e.g. showing lock screen) would be the Second Screen dialog.  That's why I suggest trying pressing Win-P, CursorUp, Enter; to change the display, possibly even cause a refresh which would make your monitor start showing something (or at least flash to black and back to blank).  Otherwise, the only other reliable keystroke sequence that I can think of for that state is this loop:  Shift-Tab, Shift-Spacebar, <wait for signs that something might be changing before next iteration>; repeat.   The goal of that one would be to end up at the Shutdown menu and execute its Restart command while Shift- was pressed--resulting in a return to the Advanced Options boot menu.  I don't know if the Advanced Options boot menu would then show or not or if it didn't how you would know that you had arrived there.  So, after that it would be a guessing game to know if you were there what you could do there.  Etc.

However, if "animated circle" is referring to the worm chasing its tail (e.g. while the fish is blowing bubbles) that suggests you are not even at the lock screen, so I don't know what would be good to try then.  Perhaps Shift-F10, thinking that the WinPE involved and might be willing to let you into its command mode?

BTW is there still a fish blowing bubbles?  I'm still on the W8.1 Preview so haven't seen the W8.1 RTM boot procedure yet.

I am also unable to get into recovery or Safe Mode using Shift F* at start up, no matter how many times I have tried.

I still don't know where there is anything which formally states that Shift-F8 is supposed to do anything at boot time using the W8 Boot Manager.  So I still consider it to be speculative or even wishful thinking that makes other real possibilities less likely to succeed.

Do you have some bootable recovery media?  Then you could boot into its command mode and see what is happening with the other boot procedure.  Etc.

Good luck

I have the same problem. To repair this I must do sfc /scannow in cmd but it works a few minutes. Computer automatically log out. And again. I wonder: maybe causes this programs for changing themes or explorer.exe. Had you ever used such programs like this?
