Windows 8.1 start menu crash when searching

Hi there,

I'm running Windows 8.1 and I've been having a problem with the metro-style start menu ever since I upgraded from Windows 8.  Whenever I open it and type a character on the keyboard (so as to use the search feature), Explorer immediately crashes and restarts.  The problem hasn't been occurring long, but at the moment the only way I can search is by typing in the 'Apps' dialogue that is accessed by clicking the small arrow in the lower left of the 'Start' dialogue.

I also have Autodesk Inventor 2014 installed (since that appears to be a common factor with errors of this nature), but I don't think that it's causing the problem.

Finally, here's a link to a dump file: https://www.dropbox.com/s/or4udcpo66mazce/explorer.exe.7860.dmp and a copy of the 1000 error from the Event Viewer.

Thanks!

You may check the issue by uninstalling Autodesk Inventor 2014.

Update your graphic card driver.Download and install the latest driver from the website of the graphic card manufacturer.

Thanks for the advice.  I tried both and was able to get rid of the problem by uninstalling Inventor 2014.  So, now that I've narrowed down the apparent cause, what would be your suggestion for fixing the problem (bearing in mind that I will need to ultimately retain my installation of Inventor for my job)?

Hi nate_28

You could try updating to Inventor 2014 Service Pack 1:

That seemed to work for some users here.

Thanks, but I've already installed it.  Inventor won't run at all without it, and the problem still persists.

I have an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics card and 8GB of RAM, so I doubt it's a performance issue (I bought my laptop based solely on its ability to handle computationally demanding applications).

It's not like the Start menu doesn't operate correctly - it does, just as long as Inventor isn't installed (regardless of whether or not it's running).  I would imagine that it has to do with a component of Inventor that's integrated itself with Explorer and is interfering with its search functionality.

What graphic card is there?Have you tried updating your graphic card driver?

I guess a good graphic card, optimum RAM will help you using Autodesk Inventor 2014 without an issue with metro style of Windows 8.1.

That's undoubtedly a very decent hardware specs.

In Windows 8.1 there is issue with Windows.UI.Xaml.dll in Autodesk Inventor 2014.

You may try the reg file as mentioned here:
