Windows 8.1 something happened and windows 8.1 couldn't be installed.

After the release of windows 8.1 preview I attempted the installation of 8.1 preview which failed. I decided it wasn't worth the bother until it was officially released so I left it uninstalled.

After the official release of 8.1 yesterday I opened the store on my windows 8 PC and I was presented with the Windows 8.1 download. I selected this and attempted to install. this failed with the message "Something happened and Windows 8.1 Preview failed to install" Whoops!

I clearly hadn't done my windows updates to update the store so I ran these updates and in my windows store was the Official windows 8.1 download.

Once downloaded it then fails saying "Something happened and windows 8.1 Pro couldn't be installed Please try again Error Code 0x80070003"

now im stuck with that. is there a way I can clear the downloaded files and have the store re-download them? where are the stores downloads kept?

im really stuck with this one....

I had a similar issue and deleted c:\$Windows.~BT (a hidden folder). It's re-downloading now so I don't know if it's the answer to the original problem but I hope that helps!

mine redownloaded today but still no luck... getting the same error message...

so after digging a little more in the C:\$windows.~BT folder here is the setup log

It appears that the error happens because it cannot find a "STUDYID" not sure what this is though?

Same issue here. Brand new machine with Win8 on it and nothing else. Trying to upgrade to 8.1 and getting the really useful 'something happened' message.

Same here. I've tried it on 3 different win 8 laptops and they all exhibit the same nonsense behavior. They don't even attempt to download. They each throw the useless "something happened..." error. I've tried every suggestion on this link - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windowsrt_1_pr-windows_install/windows-81-update-fails-0x80070003/78893c20-8778-4db1-a6dd-3d1627672c0a?rtAction=1382117804682 - NOTHING!

The first method from the above link worked just fine for me.  I was getting the exact same problem (I think from an interrupted download) and running WSRESET.EXE and then clicking on the update button from MS Store worked.  I saw the progress bar jump up to about he halfway point which seems to be where it changes from "Downloading" to "Installing" then immediately the progress bar ran backwards as if it was deleting the corrupt download.  The download started once again from the very beginning and went through the "Installing" phase without any problems.

This fixed my problem.

Method 2: Run Windows update troubleshooter.

a. Open Search by swiping in from the right edge of the screen (or if you're using a mouse, pointing to the upper-right corner of the screen and moving the mouse pointer down), and then tapping or clicking Search.

b. Tap or click Settings and type troubleshooting in the text box.

c. Tap or click Troubleshooting from the list of results.

d. Tap or click Fix problems with Windows Update, click Next and follow the instructions.

Ok so I found out how to fix this...

Well its not really a fix...

I reinstalled windows and all is well.... luckily everything was on alternative drives and I didn't have to sacrifice any files...

It would be nice to actually find out what the fix is for this problem or at least find out what causes it?

As far as I am aware reinstalling windows is the only solution to this problem. I've tried so many different ways to fix it.

Having the store re-download doesn't work.
downloading windows updates doesn't fix it either. you may get a different error code but its still the same outcome...
wsreset.exe does nothing to fix it...

the c:\$Windows.~BT folder can help you out if you want to try and fix it...

Mike
