I have some issues with sleep and hibernation on my freshly installed Windows 8.1

Hibernation gets triggered properly after the set number of minutes, however, instead of going back to the previous state, a hard boot takes place. hilberfile.sys has the current time stamp, so I suspect it's an issue with waking up, not with going to sleep.

I also tried the sleep mode as an alternative. It seems to go to sleep correctly, however, there's no chance to wake the computer up. I tried mouse, keyboard, power button - nothing. I hold the power button for 5 seconds, and a hard boot takes place. Seems to be another problem with waking up.

Any ideas for further analysis on this issue?

BIOS is up to date, and on default settings (I've skipped the latest Beta update though).

 i JUST FIXED IT mines on another forum someone uninstalled the VM oracle (virtual box ) someone also had some sort of cisco driver that was network related and it worked for about 4 of them out of 4!

BTW I had did a system restore at first & everything worked after it would not hibernate or sleep.. installed a few programs later and BOOM back to my problem. Just uninstalled VM again after installing it and BOOM SLEEP and HIBERNATE WORKS!

SO the key is to make sure you don't have some sort of NETWORK interface virtual or physical that is interfering or has a setting that blocks it!

I haven't installed Virtual Box (Hyper-V seems more advanced now), but I do use Cisco VPN client.

I also came across several BSOD during shutdown, which I guess are related.

Cisco no longer supports the VPN client, so it seems there's not going to be a fix for Win 8.1 :-(

My computer also encountered the similar problem. in my opinion, it is too old, even didnt had corresponding driver of Windows 8.

For this problem, I would like recommend you upgrade all the hardware driver to be latest, especially the Graphic driver and power management driver(if accessible).

You can use Driver Verifier to check the driver problem.

In addition, please try to disable hibernation for test.

For the BSOD problem, you can zip up the minidump files in the C:\Windows\Minidump folder and make available (provide link) via Windows Live SkyDrive. We may could find some caused reason about this p

Thanks. I believe the update on Win 8.1 release day fixed the issue. Anyway, I've not seen it since then.

I installed Windows 8.1 last night and the sleep mode does not work. My laptop is a HP Envy suitable for 8.1. The problem is real. After a 2 hour chat session today without a resolution I was offered a level 2 support call on Friday 9-25-2013.

Okay, I enabled hibernation and sleep mode again, and the same issues still occur. There's no BSOD, but the wake up process is still not working.

Interestingly, on my laptop, this doesn't happen, even though I've installed identical software including Cisco VPN.

There are also no minidump files for the broken wake up processes.

I'll do that driver check, and give an update later on.

Got the same problem my PC goes to sleep ok but when I try to wake it the system does not respond then I have to do a hard reset.  I do not have any virtual software install just a standard PC install. A fix would be great

I also have the same issue, i could not wake up my laptop except turn it off by force. Hope it fixed.

I have been having the same problem with a Lenovo Twist with SSD.  Thought it might be the SSD, but reading this it seems to be a Windows 8.1 issue.

I have finally identified the problem with my installation. I was connecting to a wireless printer using Epson Status Monitor 3. Once I connected to the printer using a USB cable, my Windows 8.1 PC started going to sleep again.

My fairly new laptop now has Windows 8.1. However the hibernate state is totally a mess. When I close the lid on my laptop, after a while all kinds of windows are brought up, applications are started and, some of the time, the closed laptop starts to talk and play music!!! Each time this happens, different windows and apps start. Usually, new documents are generated in some of the MS Office tools. I see all this as soon as I open the laptop and log on again. If I shut down the laptop before closing the lid, the system does not launch all these windows and apps. Neither does the machine start talking. Finally, while hibernating, even for a short time, the battery drains almost entirely.

I have read that some of these problems can occur if the "narrator" assistance is on (for people who are visually impaired). That assistance is off. 

Also, the little blue window icon (start?) is now white and does nothing. This means that to shut down, I have to use Alt-F4. 

I hope someone can point me to a single fix for all this. BTW-- A friend of mine has started seeing/hearing the same hibernation behavior.

Finally solved this issue by disabling fast startup in power settings.

Fast start in you bios or in windows?
