Windows 8 Blue Screen Of Death (BSOD) BAD_POOL_CALLER

Hi,

I have been using windows 8 for the past week and have issues with BSOD appearing at random intervals and over the lat few days more frequently. After performing several rebuilds of the OS and carefully selecting Windows 8 supported applications i still continue to receive this error.

I have reviewed the minidump files and the cause of the issues seems to be with ntoskrnl.exe

I have contacted microsoft support and sony vaio support and they advise e to rebuild every time or restore the system to a previous working version. Unfortunately this does not resolve the issue and i find myself back at the beginning again.

Could anyone advise on this issue and how to resolve?

Thanks

Matt

Hi, please enable Driver verifier to get the causing driver:

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/101379-driver-verifier-enable-disable.html

http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=244617

when you get a new BSOD, boot to safe mode, disable driver verifier, reboot to normal mode and upload the newest dmp file from the folder C:\Windows\Minidump to your public SkyDrive [1] folder and post the link here.

Hi. I'm having the exact same problem on the same laptop. I've also verified from crash dumps that the same ntoskrnl.exe is the cause, or so it says. Also it only goes to blue screen after i open my laptop after having put it to sleep. Any suggestions on which course of action I should take?

I am getting the same thing with my new Windows 8 laptop. EVERY time I resume from sleep the computer BSODs referring to the BAD_POOL_CALLER. The dumps tell me that it is NTOSKRNL.EXE too.

My dumps tell me:

Thanks Andre, I have just noticed another entry in the log that refers to a driver. I have uninstalled that driver and I no longer get the BSOD.

If it reoccurs I will upload my latest dump. Thanks for your offer of assistance. Andrew

yes I've also seen jakndis.sys crashes. Don't use tools like Bluescrenview or Whocrashed. They display crap. Always use WinDbg from the Debugging Tools.

MSFT has a show which helps you to use the tool:

Thanks for the tip and the link to the video. I will start using WinDbg from now on.

WinDBG is the gold std but you will have to download symbols (while they can be gotten from the MS symbol server that slow performance way, way down) for each OS you want to analyze and they can mount up (my symbol cache is >12 gigs)

Good site for people interested in DeBugging  http://www.sysnative.com/forums/forum.php

(disclaimer) I also post there.

I've been having the same BAD_POOL_CALLER BSOD issues as well - three times today, in fact, and it's getting annoying. I've downloaded the debugger and symbol set from the SDK page, and it appears to be blaming AVG as well, which is odd, since this problem only just started happening... well, today, and I've been running AVG for some time now. I've uploaded today's minidump files to Google Drive, in case anyone wants to take a look at them in the hopes of spotting something that I've missed:

Edit: And it's just happened a fourth time. Google Drive link to minidump file follows:

Edit2: I've disabled AVG, so we'll see if that's the cause.

Okay, that's odd, because like I said in my previous post, I've been using AVG for a while now and it's never caused this issue before. In fact, yesterday was the first time it happened, and it was a sudden onset of trouble. After I disabled AVG, there were no issues, which lend credence to the idea that AVG is the source of the trouble. More specifically, it appears to be the antivirus component, since this morning I only disabled the antivirus but left the firewall running, and I haven't had any issues yet.

Time to check the AVG forums to see if there's anything from that end.

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:

How To Find Drivers:
- search Google for the name of the driver
- compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
- visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
- if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program

The most common drivers are listed on this page: Driver Reference

http://www.carrona.org/dvrref.php

http://sysnative.com/drivers/

- - Driver manufacturer links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org

just as an aside, hot spot shield in this case is actually a vpn program for accessing certain british sites--something that defender isn't going to do for you!

I stand corrected.  My source said malware.  Happy to update the database.  Then I guess you should try to update it if it is necessary

*update*

Hot spot shield has new update unfortunately. I am bugging them about it already.

It would seem that Asrock just doesn't update their drivers very often. I just bought a z77 board from them last week, and updated all the drivers from the website, and almost every one of the ones mentioned above are from Asrock, and only a few had updates by manufacturers. Akk the Asrock proprietary ones were old, and the Logitech ones are maintenance updates for a gaming keyboard from the dark ages.

So anyway, Asrock; if you have one of their boards, your drivers might be old.

Hi,

I would appreciate if you could be so kind and take a look at my dumps. http://sdrv.ms/10Hwy1G

Windows 8 x64

I did go out to ASrock and download the Win8 drivers however I believe these are causing issues as when I install Win7 on my machine I do not receive any BSOD.

Thanks

Hi,

I would appreciate if you could be so kind and take a look at my dumps.

Do a memory test with memtest86+, because you get memory corruptions:

*******************************************************************************
*                                                                             *

Having same issue. Steps followed. https://www.dropbox.com/s/aixkjzfd5ikd92l/080513-23462-01.dmp

the Atheros PCI-E Ethernet Controller driver L1E62x64.sys causes the crash:

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
Arguments:

Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :

Hi Andre,

Thank you for the information, I replaced my memory with some listed on the QVL and for a while this cleared up the BSOD. It also helped track down another 2 issues: Storage controller and Software driver that we both causing my machine to crash.

Appreciate your efforts and apologise for not responding earlier.

All the best,

Mirkz
