Windows 8.1 not sleeping
I have a new desktop computer with Windows 8.1 preinstalled. I have set up the computer to sleep after 20 minutes of inactivity and the display to be turned off after 5 minutes. Unfortunately, absolutely nothing is happening. I have reset the system to default setting: to turn of the display after 10 minutes and to sleep after 20 minutes. Still no change. I have been manually putting the computer to sleep, but when I wake it from sleep it is not prompting me for a password even though I had also made changes to the settings to ask for a password on wake up. What do I need to do short of returning the computer for a refund? Any help will be appreciated.

Kindly go through the following KB article:

Troubleshoot problems waking computer from sleep mode

Follow the steps to receive a prompt for password on wakeup.

a.     Press Windows Key + W Key and type Troubleshooting.

b.    Click on view all and select Power.

c.     Select Require password on wakeup under Password protection on wakeup.

Make sure the Graphic Card Driver of your system has the updated driver. You may need to visit the website of the Graphic Card Manufacturer to download and install the latest driver.

According to your given description, I think your PC is not going into sleep mode otherwise it will definitely ask for the password. Before returning your computer, try to troubleshoot the problem first.

  • Go to Windows Keys + W >> Click on Troubleshooting
  • From the open Window click on View All>> click on Power from the open list
  •  Launch the Power Troubleshooter >> click on Next
  • Now Automatic Detection will start and fixing the issue, after its completion click on Close.
  • At last reboot the machine & restart.

Thanks for the response. I tried the suggested steps but didn't work. I even contacted HP support but couldn't solve the problem. I will return the machine to the store for a replacement or a refund.
