Windows 8.1 incorrect password
When I start Windows 8.1 or have the computer locked for a long period, it wont let me log back on. Says 'incorrect password'. Yes, I am typing in the correct password. I have to go back to the main logon screen and select 'other user' use the same username and password. It works. This is the 3rd 8.1 build I have come across this issue. Looking at the logs, all my logon attempts when it says 'incorrect password' are logged as successful in eventvwr. Anyone else come across this issue, the computers are domain memb

Are you trying to login to this pc using a domain account? Then verify this password is correct using another pc in the same domain.. Else you can reset the password.

Rarely I have seen, though the password is correct, due to some issue it wont sync with some windows 8 pcs. May be its due to temporary issue which prevents that particular pc from contacting the domain controller..

Upon restarts it should be gone.. But if the problem persists disjoin and rejoin to the domain may have a good chance of fixing this..

Your other account in the domain may be able to connect may be using previously used cached credentials..

More about cached credentials..

Is this domain controller server 2003 or something? This issue I have encountered extensively under 2003 server and windows 8 and finally ended up with a upgrade to 2008 r2 which fixed it to grater extent. Almost ok..

if you are trying to login to a domain this may happen when the password is not cached on your system or your machine is not able to connect to domain controller.

Try login in to the laptop from the Domain network (Say office) atleast once. then u should be able to login.

The password is correct, I can log on to the domain OK on a non windows 8.1 machine. The same password works if I select 'other user' on the same computer Win 8.1 machine.

B Matore,

I realize you verified the password and have ensured that it is correct. However, what Hetti is suggesting involves clearing cached credentials in case the system is holding on to a password that is not correct. Can you verify you have cleared any cached credentials as outlined in Hetti's response above?

Thank you,

Jessica

My issue turned out to be that Windows 8.1 changed the keyboard from English US to English UK or vice versa can't remember which way it was. My password contained special characters which meant when I restarted the computer I was typing in the wrong special character.  This issue has since been resolved,  cant tell you which windows update resolved this. Keyboard layout stays the same even after restarts now.

Sorry for not updating this earlier.

I also experience this exact same problem.  I know my password is correct.  But it just will not work.  I am just glad I had a second user to use then go back and try the same user and password and bam you are logged in.
