Windows 8.1 download was cancelled after stopping BITS?

I started downloading windows 8.1 over free wifi at the local library. It was slow, but I had made 31% and was going to continue the rest another time. I went home and wanted to use my computer without continuing the download. I had no problems with this. However, I did a stop of the background intelligent transfer service (as it chews my limited home data) and realised that my 31% was now gone, and had to start all over again...

To test, I started the download again over my home wifi, and then PAUSED the download in the Store. For some reason, the Service Host: Local System was still downloading huge amounts of data...so I cancelled the BITS once again to find that in the Store, my download had an error and was once again, gone...

Am I correct in finding that stopping BITS also cancels that Windows 8.1 download progress in the Windows Store?

The Windows 8.1 Update is actually downloaded by Windows Update, which uses BITS. So I can see how stopping BITS would effect Windows Update.

Hi,

According to BITS service description: Transfers files in the background using idle network bandwidth. If the service is disabled, then any applications that depend on BITS, such as Windows Update or MSN Explorer, will be unable to automatically download programs and other information.

We could know that if you disable this service when you downloading Windows updates, it would be stoped.
