You can run a Hyper-V role on Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard edition.

A Windows 8.1 virtual machine can be installed on Hyper-V with Office products.

As Kujala said, you can install the Hyper-V role and then create a VM of Windows 8.1 (any version you want) and install whichever version of MS Office you like as long as the Office version license fits your usage requirements.

Well I guess it is all about licensing !

Customer has HP OEM Windows 2012 ROK

about a dozen PC's with Windows 8.1 Pro and Office Home & Business

so... I told him he would need to buy 5 x Windows 8.1 Pro under Licensing(4 more than he needs!)

Unless you buy a new copy of 8.1 you can't use it off another machine, as it is tied to the machine the sticker is on and is not transferable.

If you need more than 1 VM with 8.1 I'd contact Microsoft about a Volume license.

what I can't justify to the client is cost of Volume license version of Windows 8.1 Pro & Office 2013 std

plus ince entry point is 5 units.....

the difference in cost of 1 x 2013 retail + 1 x Windows 8.1 Pro is 250

Licensed version of 1 x Office 2013 std + 1 x Windows 8.1 Pro is 520

I just sold the client some Lenovo i3 PC with Windows 8.1 Pro + MS Office 2013 H & B is 400 - like he said 520 without a PC is just a rip-off and he can't even buy that because he only need 1 NOT 5.

I guess he's gonna have to choose the pc option  :)
