Windows 8.1 Pro on Business network - Get Windows 10 app won't show

Sometimes Microsoft just makes me scratch my head.  Running Windows 8.1 Pro on my laptop here.  Microsoft's recommendation for the windows 10 upgrade eligibility is to check the Get Windows 10 app, which won't run if it detects its on a company network and I am supposed to ask an administrator about the update.  Exactly how should I talk to myself about the update?

"Self, can I have the Windows 10 upgrade for my windows 8.1 professional that came with my laptop even though I am on a company domain network with WSUS enabled updates?"

Oh sure, that sounds like a reasonable request.  Yes, you can have it!

I know what Microsoft is trying to accomplish by holding it back from general view of people on a company network.  Thanks for trying to help, but there is a big hole in your plan there.  Is there no way to take a look at the status of this laptop prior to 7/29?  Company network does not mean this machine has Windows Client with an SA contract, which would make it not eligible.  This license came with the laptop from HP.

The get windows 10 icon in the task tray isn't necessary to upgrade to Win 10 when it releases. It's just a "reservation" system from Microsoft for the sole purpose to see how many people will be adopting early, and to possibly spam your email.

You can upgrade to Win 10 anytime within a year of its release.

Granted.  However there is that pesky reservation thing that pre-checks your hardware, downloads the pieces needed beforehand, etc.

"When you reserve, you can confirm your device is compatible with Windows 10. Between reservation and when your upgrade is ready, the files you need for the upgrade will be downloaded to your PC to make the final installation go more quickly. Then, when your upgrade is ready after July 29, 2015, you get a notification that lets you get started with your upgrade."

I guess my system will be a Windows 10 clean install then.  Plan ahead?  Who needs that?

Yes, the reservation is nice for those things. However I fail to see why your Win 10 will be a clean install.

All that means is it will take a little extra time

Hi DennisAston,

Windows 10 Upgrade Offer is valid for qualified Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 devices, including devices you already own.
Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 8/8.1 Enterprise, and Windows RT/RT 8.1 are not included in the reservation.
For your situation, it is more likely an volume licensing environment, right?
Active Software Assurance customers in volume licensing have the benefit to upgrade to Windows 10 enterprise offerings outside of the reservation offer.
To check for compatibility and other important installation information, please visit the device manufacturers website.
