Windows 8.1 File Explorer crashes repeatedly with iPhone movies (MOV) files

Hello

A company uses iPhones to take movies of on-site assessments. They burn these to CD and insert into a Windows 8.1 Pro laptop.

When they hover the mouse over a MOV file, Windows 8.1 File Explorer crashes repeatedly and the computer become unresponsive. If the file is copied to the laptop hard disk the problem is worse with repeated File Explorer crashing and the file cannot be deleted until it is renamed to .TXT

Windows Update KB2975719 causes this problem so I uninstalled it and everything is fine.

Please advise on the status of this issue, when it will be fixed and when the update can safely be re-installed.

Hi Michael

OK I will wait for the September update and see what happens. I cannot get a crash dump because I have already uninstalled KB2975719 on the affected users.

It makes sense that KB2975719 causes the issue because in that update there is an new MP4 metadata "feature" and the error occurs whenever the metadata is read - such as hovering over a MOV filename

I've started to have this issue yesterday when I copied mov files from iphone to hard drive.

To fix the issue, I had to uninstall the following updates:

Instead of uninstalling KBxxxxxxx Updates which may contain other fixes it is more important

to get Microsoft to acknowledge the problem and work on a real fix!

Fact is MediaPlayer as well as FileExplorer crash hard on "sniffing" at the latest version, from Apple devices originating *.MOV video files and it all points back to said MFMP4SRCSNK.DLL screwing things up.

did you guys also tried to install reliable codec or video player like VLC and test this issue? I have .MOV file here (from my Sony digital camera) and everything seems fine, I play it at my VLC video player (K-lite and WMP, crashed)

This problem is fixed on Windows 10 if it helps anyone (tested on build 10041), free upgrade this summer for existing Windows 8 / 8.1 users.

MICROSOFT HELP!!

This issue is still occurring for Windows 8.1 users (April 30th 2015)

Uninstalling KB2975719 does not work now, probably because it has been replaced by another update.

Windows 8.1 File Explorer is unable to read some MOV files, crashes and locks up the computer. In addition Windows Media Player is unable to play some MOV files.

Blocking the MF MPEG4 Property Handler in the Registry enables Windows Explorer to read MOV file properties without crashing

but Windows Media Player still cannot play those MOV files

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-8/151010-mov-files-crashing-file-explorer.html

Is this caused by a reported bug that has not been fixed yet?

After testing I can confirm that these MOV files play no problem on Windows 7 machines but the users in question are all on Windows 8.1

After waiting for months for a resolution the users found their own answer to this problem:

  1. Upload the MOV files to OneDrive
  2. Open OneDrive on their iPad or other compatible device
  3. Work with MOV files no problem

Sadly have tried all of the above "fixes", deleted all the above mentioned updates but still the problem persists, tried to convert the files to something else, avi, flv etc. but unfortunately the MOV files close the converter as well, so getting totally fed up now.

Is there anyway of iPhone movies being saved as something other than MOV before uploading to my laptop?

Someone also suggested stopping the files from showing as a thumbnail, trouble is that's the only way I can recognise half of my videos without going through the laborious process of renaming every one, which itself is a pain as they close when you click on rename.

Anybody else got any ideas before my laptop goes through the window!
