Windows 8.1 File Explorer crashes repeatedly with iPhone movies (MOV) files

Hello

A company uses iPhones to take movies of on-site assessments. They burn these to CD and insert into a Windows 8.1 Pro laptop.

When they hover the mouse over a MOV file, Windows 8.1 File Explorer crashes repeatedly and the computer become unresponsive. If the file is copied to the laptop hard disk the problem is worse with repeated File Explorer crashing and the file cannot be deleted until it is renamed to .TXT

Windows Update KB2975719 causes this problem so I uninstalled it and everything is fine.

Please advise on the status of this issue, when it will be fixed and when the update can safely be re-installed.

Moderator: Could we have an official answer from Microsoft about when this issue will actually be fixed please?

September 24th, 2014 10:00am

Hi,

Apologize to say we could not make it for sure when will have the issue mentioned fixed.

If this issue is caused by KB2975719, we may temporary uninstall it, and wait for the new update.

As britishdhez suggested, if convenient, please take a try to install the new update for test first.

Further, we might also take a try to seek help at the phone side and see if there could offer any suggestions.

Besides, please take a look at the following thread:

Windows 8.1 File Explorer Crashing

Please follow the steps below to generate an explorer dump:

Copy the following into a new notepad, then save it to a reg file:

"

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe]
"DumpFolder"=hex(2):43,00,3a,00,5c,00,4c,00,6f,00,63,00,61,00,6c,00,44,00,75,\
  00,6d,00,70,00,73,00,00,00
"DumpType"=dword:00000002

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]
"GlobalFlag"=dword:02000100
"PageHeapFlags"=dword:00000003

"

Then double click to import it; or open regedit.exe and then import the reg file to it;

The next time explorer crashes, Windows error reporting would save a dump file under C:\Localdumps, find them and then upload it into OneDrive and then post the shared link here.

After collecting the dumps, run the following reg file to stop dump collection:

"

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Windows Error Reporting\LocalDumps\Explorer.exe]
[-HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Image File Execution Options\explorer.exe]

"

Best regards

Hi Michael

OK I will wait for the September update and see what happens. I cannot get a crash dump because I have already uninstalled KB2975719 on the affected users.

It makes sense that KB2975719 causes the issue because in that update there is an new MP4 metadata "feature" and the error occurs whenever the metadata is read - such as hovering over a MOV filename

Will have to see if this problem re-occurs

Has there been any news of a fix on this? I'm having exactly the same issue (mouse over an mp4 file from iphone, get a crash). The only problem is that I can't uninstall KB2975719. There's simply no uninstall option for that update.
November 4th, 2014 12:22pm

Is this broken again? A quick search shows others stating that a November patch killed MOV playback again (though not sure which patch), and its crashing for me once again...

Certainly crashing for me.

These files crash everything though. Quicktime, Windows Media Player, File Explorer... The update listed above was unsuccessful previously and have just installed the November updates and still doing it!  Additionally, any organisation of my files on the desktop is lost.

Very bizarre and so frustrating.

I have the same problem. Win 8.1 Pro 64bit. Tried all the latest patches and updates.

Do I really need to start a Linux Live CD to move iPhone MOV files to my Windows PC?

Or is the solution to de-install Windows Media Player and all MS media components?

Has anyone tried this with a Win 8.1 N version that comes without the Microsoft Media Player?

Windows 8.1 here, with the same Explorer and built-in Windows image browser app crashing as soon as an iPhone .mov is accessed. Definitely seems meta-data related as Explorer even crashes when a view is changed to sort by "Date taken".

I followed i_Mike's advice and uninstalled both of the updates KB2975719 and KB2995388, but the crashing persists. The PC has all current windows updates installed except the two above, so I wonder if a more recent update has reintroduced, or also contained the bug?

Rather frustrating to say the least. Perhaps someone out there will be able to find another source of this problem.

Im experiencing the same issue with Windows 8.1 and explorer crashing when accessing certain Mov files.

I too have uninstalled both KB patch but didn't help. I can play the mov file using VLC player.

just wondered if you have installed format factory + codecs?

this is one of the packages that I recently updating including the codecs and I think it is since then it happened. even rolling back to the previous version now of format factory didn't help so whether or not it has tampered with the associations

Instead of uninstalling KBxxxxxxx Updates which may contain other fixes it is more important

to get Microsoft to acknowledge the problem and work on a real fix!

Fact is MediaPlayer as well as FileExplorer crash hard on "sniffing" at the latest version, from Apple devices originating *.MOV video files and it all points back to said MFMP4SRCSNK.DLL screwing things up.

As discussed on other forum if you rename the above .dll that seems to provide a fix.

Microsoft should be watching so hopefully they will provide a proper patch.

Thank you so much for this info. KB2975719 and KB2995388 duly uninstalled and all is now well.  I didn't have either of the other two files that were mentioned as culprits.

I've had this problem since the middle of last October and it was a total, total pain. I upload videos weekly to a local live music club's Facebook page and whilst I could still upload them to FB quickly directly from the iPhone, I couldn't view them on the PC, or upload high definition videos. Only videos uploaded since last October were affected, others could still be viewed with no problems.

Interestingly enough, some videos made after the installation of KB2975719  were ok, unless I'm mistaken and read things wrongly,  but when KB2995388 arrived on the scene it all went pear shaped. At least it was just the photo app that crashed and not the entire PC, but it was so annoying.

I have been searching for solutions to this problem for weeks and it took me a long time to find this forum. Thank you to all those who take the time to share info like this.

For those delaing with this issue in a domain environment I used the following script as an application in SCCM (you could also use it as a GPO startup script):

Place the following DLL File in the folder with the script (this is the pre-update mfmp4srcsnk.dll which does not exhibit the crash)

Use the following batch script:

Looks like the .mov preview handler might be broken, and that this has been the case for a while now, specifically affecting iOS users on Windows. Several sites are now suggesting a "solution" consisting of manually removing Windows Update fixes. That can't be the solution that Microsoft wants.

Can anyone here escalate this for a fix?

MICROSOFT HELP!!

This issue is still occurring for Windows 8.1 users (April 30th 2015)

Uninstalling KB2975719 does not work now, probably because it has been replaced by another update.

Windows 8.1 File Explorer is unable to read some MOV files, crashes and locks up the computer. In addition Windows Media Player is unable to play some MOV files.

Blocking the MF MPEG4 Property Handler in the Registry enables Windows Explorer to read MOV file properties without crashing

but Windows Media Player and the Windows 8.1 Video App still cannot play those MOV files

http://www.edugeek.net/forums/windows-8/151010-mov-files-crashing-file-explorer.html

Is this caused by a reported bug that has not been fixed yet?

http://connect.microsoft.com/VisualStudio/feedbackdetail/view/816075/media-foundation-mpeg-4-property-handler-returns-incorrect-video-frame-rate

After testing I can confirm that these MOV files play no problem on Windows 7 machines but the users in question are all on Windows 8.1

I've found a solution, that works on my Windows 8.1 64bit machine.

1. Install VideoLAN VLC player.

2. Right click on any .MOV file.

3. Open with -> Choose default program

4. Select VLC and ensure 'use this app for all .MOV is ticked.

It prevents explorer from crashing in the folders and allows you to view the videos.

I tried this - making VLC player default for MOV files, but it didn't help me. File explorer still crashed with IOS MOV files.

Finally, kept VLC as default, considered renaming "mfmp4srcsnk.dll" but I have 64bit WIN 8.1, a search found several versions.

In the end, I used a third party file explorer - XYplorer which resolved my problem (trying to copy IOS MOV files from hard drive to NAS disk caused Windows file explorer to crash repeatedly). This did not occur when I  used XYplorer (www.xyplorer.com) to do the same.

Hello,

I experienced the same issue with vids shot on my iPhone in early 2014, more recent ones are working fine, (I usually keep my iOS up to date). Running Windows 8.1.

When the folder view setting is Icons (i.e. not displaying properties) no issues, when I try to change the folder view to Details Explorer would crash.

I was able to resolve this by updating the metadata of the video files in Windows using Winamp. It took a little time to save the file, Winamp will not respond for about 10secs but I only had six files so not a big issue.

So I assume Windows was unable to display the metadata of the original file from iPhone. There are plenty of metadata editors out there.
