Windows 8.1 Enterprise - Domain Join breaks IE, Windows Store, Metro Apps & More

Hello,

I'm testing Windows 8.1 Enterprise on a couple machines in our environment.  We currently have a 2008 Functional Domain on 2008R2 DC's.

After joining the machines to the domain Internet Explorer launches for a split second and then I get nothing.  Going to the Start Screen, all of the Metro Apps and Windows Store have white x's on them.  If I go to launch the Windows Store I get a purple screen that loads nothing.  If I go to change my Account Picture I get an error.

I was thinking it was something related to Group Policy, which I am in charge of.  I put the machines in the Computers container and the issue still persists.  I do not have any Windows 8.x policies defined as we strictly have Windows 7 clients.

I am so perplexed.  I'm going to start going through the Event Logs but I'm just wondering if someone else encountered this.

I even associated my Domain account with my Microsoft Account.  I also ran the App Troubleshooter which detected and fixed some issues but didn't fix anything visible.  I ran WSReset and I get the message: "Windows cannot find 'ms-windows-store:PurgeCaches'.  Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again."

Just to let you know that Ive just encountered the same thing.

I'm just checking out 8.1 and joined the vmachine to a domain

Now all the apps on the start screen are broken and IE is doing the split second thing

Oops

I found message s about the firewall not being enabled in the event log, turned on the firewall and everything appears OK

HI,

I think the event log can give us more detailed information about this issue.

And what is the result if we test with a local account.

Please also check this group policy in your environment: Turn off the Store application

Try Microsoft Accounts troubleshooter, check if it can make any difference.

Ok, for the record, I need to drive to Microsoft and have a sit down chat with them...anyway....for us... Camera (everytime would fail on open), Weather (until Internet accessed first) and Food and Drinks App (usually on first launch then work thereafter) would fail after joining to domain.

Check;

- Folder Redirection, for us Camera App failed, we had Pictures redirected, was going under sub folder of My Documents, turned it off (repointed to userprofile) and works and able to delete pics now as ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES is added to userprofile by default.  "See BAT script below to try manually fixing."

- If using any sort of Internet Proxy, connect to Internet first with old school IE browser then Tile Apps should update/work/update/refresh.

Win 8.1 uses the Internet like we need air, so...make sure you place exceptions and check proxy filters.

I did below too in a BAT script...just to make sure (change PC601 to your file server);

echo y| cacls "%USERPROFILE%" /T /E /G "Administrators":F "SYSTEM":F "CREATOR OWNER":F %USERNAME%:F "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES":F
echo y| cacls "%USERPROFILE%\*.*" /T /E /G "Administrators":F "SYSTEM":F "CREATOR OWNER":F %USERNAME%:F "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES":F

echo y| cacls "\\pc601\USERS\%USERNAME%\*.*" /T /E /G "Administrators":F "SYSTEM":F "CREATOR OWNER":F %USERNAME%:F "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES":F

echo y| cacls \\pc601\USERS\%USERNAME% /T /E /G "Administrators":F "SYSTEM":F "CREATOR OWNER":F %USERNAME%:F "ALL APPLICATION PACKAGES":F

Hope this helps.

My issue was that I had the Windows Firewall Service shut off.  After enabling it, functionality was fine for me.

After trying many things, our solution was to enable the following group policy:

Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Network\Network Isolation\Subnet definitions are authoritative

We didn't have to specify any subnet IP ranges

This worked for me!  Microsoft Edge stopped working properly when joined to a Domain.  Now it's working fine.
