Windows 8.1 Computer won't wake up from sleep without powering off and back on

I have a HP PC at work running Windows 8.1.  When I leave work I sign off, and then through a VPN connection use a remote desktop connection to login from home at night or over the weekend.  this only works for a day or two, and then I can no longer remote connect to my PC, and when I return to my desk I have to hold the power button in until the PC shuts down, and then turn it on.  Nothing will wake it up.  I have the power setting set so the hard drive never sleeps or hibernates.  What am I missing that would allow me to remote connect to my PC.  I need to be able to do this even if I am not at my desk for several days, even a couple of weeks.  This was never a problem before I installed Windows 8.1

Any ideas?

Hi,

Please make sure that the power plan is set as Never sleep:

Power option -> Change plan settings -> Put the computer to sleep -> Never

Also, for the issue about not waking up from sleep, you can refer to this link:

How to fix a computer that cannot wake up from sleep or standby mode

http://www.geeksinphoenix.com/blog/post/2013/07/14/How-to-fix-a-computer-that-cannot-wake-up-from-sleep-or-standby-mode.aspx

If it persists, please run this command:

powercfg -energy

Please upload your energy report here for my research and the event log.

Hope these could be helpful.

Hi,

All power settings are set to never sleep or hibernate.  Here is the energy report.

I am going to need more detail than that, what do you mean "don't click update".  What update?  In addition a new problem has come up, the computer freezes daily, no mouse action, no ctrl-alt-del action, again have to power off and power back on.  it seems this is related.

When it freezes there is only one way out, hold power button until the PC shuts down, and then restart.  There is no message.  What I am trying to figure out is whether this is a windows 8.1 problem, or a PC issue.  Since the problems began after Windows 8.1 install, it seems to be related tot hat, but it could be coincidental that it's a PC or hard drive problem.

I'll run the checks suggested and see how things are.

All power settings are set to never sleep or hibernate.

lnssatt.exe

Could you try doing without that?  Also, instead of Sleep have you tried Hibernate?   BTW it's not clear if your problem symptom is with automatic cases or manual cases.

February 22nd, 2014 1:02pm

Again somewhat confused.  Do without what?  if you mean never sleep, I found if it sleeps or hibernates I cannot remote connect at all.  Also don't know what you mean by automatic or manual.

Do without what?

The process I quoted from your energy report.

don't know what you mean by automatic or manual.

You could do it manually (in several ways) using the GUI.  E.g. with keyboard focus on the Taskbar press Alt-F4, F4, and choose Sleep or Hibernate.  You could even hibernate via  shutdown.exe  /h   in a cmd window.

February 24th, 2014 6:32pm

Another way to manually do it is how I accidentally did it not long ago  press a sleep key on keyboard, either hardware (that which is on a desk, on a table, on your lap, ) or software (that which is on your computer screen). In my case, it was hardware. It seems that a shutdown via holding the power button might be required to fix that  bummer.

You are implying your computer is going to sleep prematurely and then you have the OP's problem symptom waking it up?  Why not fix the first symptom then, going to sleep prematurely?  Do you have an Energy report to look at too?

The problem was not Windows update or settings, it was one of my ram stick. Only a cohencidence with Windows update. I used memtest to test my memory, there is the link : http://www.memtest.org/

I finally solved this issue for myself by going under Power Options, Advanced settings, USB settings, and disabling USB selective suspend setting.
