Hi,

My laptop was running Windows 8.1 when it seems to have suffered (SSD) disk hardware failure.

In the course of troubleshooting, I asked windows to do various things include an autorepair, and a reset.

Having realised it was hardware failure, I replaced the drive with an older drive, and booted up.

The computer has started an auto-repair without any further prompting from me. Is that because of my work when the previous drive was in the machine?

It's taking a long time (an hour so far). What's going on? I hope the old drive isn't getting trashed too!Any

Any advice much appreciated.

2. I use 3rd pty tool to follow HHD health

(It may warn you if there is SSD degradation.)

3. I do not understand what is the final status. SSD is out of computer, old HDD in in and after repair. Does computer work as expected now?

Well, I decided to abort the repair.

Using DVD I booted into commandl ine repair tools, and used DiskPart to delete old partitions. and then restored my full system image to the old drive. - Which got me back to something recognisable.

With the ssd drive still out, I connected it via an caddy for usb external drives. The caddy light showed signs of activity. Disk Manager said the drive was offline because it had an identical signature to the other drive connected. (Makes sense as I'd just restored the backup image of the ssd drive to the non-ssd drive).

So I then removed the non-ssd drive again, and put back the ssd drive - and it worked - like nothing had happened !!! So I feel like I've gone in a big circle for nothing. Maybe a loose connection, but so far as good as new.
