Windows 8.1 - root directory displays in different hierarchies between users on same computer, and between different computers

I have W8.1 on both a laptop and a desktop. When I use File Explorer to find the path to a particular folder resident on a network drive, the root directory main branch "Network" does not appear for some users on the desk top.  For other users, on the desktop and the laptop, it is there but does not contain the folder (call it "DS") I am seeking. The folder is now within "This PC" for one desktop user and the laptop user, both times "This PC" being a highest level branch from the root directory. For another user on the desktop, call her K, it is within the "Desktop" primary branch and then within "This PC". All of this would perhaps be of no consequence to me except it is puzzling, but more importantly an Epson app on the desktop for user K cannot locate folder DS to establish the destination folder for scanned images.

I am reluctant to advance to W10 until I have fixed the problem, or have been assured that W10 will allow the Epson App to find the proper path.  I have uninstalled and reinstalled the Epson app with no change in results.

Bruce -- Thank you for your response, I would have acknowledged it sooner except I hadn't set an email alert in this forum, and it took awhile to track back on how to get there and then check out what you had said.

I am increasingly developing the view that the problem is on the Epson Scan app or the settings I have selected for it.  I had been successfully using the browse feature within it for some months and then suddenly became unable to locate the set of folders I had been using as destinations on the network drive.  I do not recall making any change to the Epson or the network settings.  I can locate the folders using Windows Explorer, but via a different path than used in Epson.  All files are there, and I can add to them by using an interim destination in Epson and then moving the folders/files recently created.  When I invoke Epson's browse function a branch is hidden on the browse tree,  When I fiddle a bit (hard to describe let alone replicate) the relevant folder on the Network drive appears in the Browse tree but access is denied (can't remember the message) but the implication was that some setting change is required.  I tried the Private Network link above with no success, perhaps not surprising given that everything was working fine until maybe 3-4 weeks ago.

It would increase my comfort level if this makes sense to you.  Then I can get on with upgrading to Windows 10, hopefully with impunity.

Does the Epson printer have an account in the AD? If so, you may need to change the access rights for that account. Or add the Epson account to the folder where the files are located with access rights.

I can attempt that but, perhaps I did not mention this, all was working just fine, the Epson Browse function included until about the end of July -- several months with no issues-- and then things went south. I have no recollection about changing any settings in the Epson app, Windows or the Network drive.  There were probably some Windows updates though.
