Windows 8.1 - Unable to search for certain files using the Explorer search function and using certain parts of the file name

I believe in Windows 8.1 the "-" signifies that you DONT want the following word included in the search. Kind of like google or ebay searches do.

Use this "~*-*"  to include a dash in your search and let us know if that works. For example "~*-*  07505

or  "07505 ~*-*"

Hi All,

I have a really strange issue when using the search feature on Windows 8.1 in the File Explorer.

A file with the name '78063-0002 Trichlorocarbanilide bx TH-0750514.doc' is returned in the search when using the following strings: '78063-0002', 'Trichlorocarbanilide, or 'bx', or '*.doc' but not when using 'TH-0750514'.

The dash is not the issue, the search is fine on the file server.  The location cannot be indexed as it is a network drive "\\SERVER\Shared Docs\Folder Path".

This only started happening when the PC was upgraded to Win-8.1.  It worked fine in 7.

Any thoughts??

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the response.

Yes, using "~*-*" does work when searching, for example, "~*-*07505"

After testing (and as I said above), I found that the '-' is not the problem.
FILENAME: "78063-0002 Trichlorocarbanilide bx TH-0750514.doc"

1. If searching for -002, it returns the correct file.
2. If searching for -075, it does not return the file at all.
3. If searching for 075, it does not return the file at all.

The issue appears to be something within the filename....

More testing reveals that if the "TH-0750514" is place at the start of the file name, for example, "TH-0750514 78063-0002 Trichlorocarbanilide bx.doc", then 2 & 3 above does return the file!!!.......Eh??????? O_o WTF

What is going on here?
