Windows 8, Black screen upon boot, movable cursor

Works in safe mode.  But everything's huge and useless, and it has no internet.

I have an msi nf750 g55 motherboard with onboard nvidiea graphics.

It is correctly detecting and using a driver for this board.

I've tried using the repair facility, it says it can't help.

I'm really fortunate to have another drive with windows 7 on.

Is there a solution?

I find it really weird that everything loads, and installs, in a nice resolution, but it won't display come business time.

Hi,

The fact that you can get to safe mode, means it may have something to do with the graphics driver.

Go into safe mode and get to device manager ( windows key + x ) go to display adapter

Expand and choose the name for your graphics card right click  : Properties : Driver Tab :

Roll back (assuming it is not greyed out): restart computer.

If you still have your motherboards DVD try adding the Live update program.

I'm having a similar issue. I upgraded to Windows 8 this morning. Everything looked fine. I closed my laptop and went to work. When I got to the office and opened the laptop, black screen. It took a few hard resets to finally get it to fire back up.

I close my laptop, and head home. I open my laptop and it's extremely hot, fans going crazy, BLACK SCREEN.

I have an Alienware Mx17, Radeon 7970m graphics card. I sincerely hope MS acknowledges this sooner than later instead of looking for a zillion other things to blame it on. Until then I'm rolling back to Windows 7. What a shame too. After a few hours of playing around with it, it seems pretty slick.

October 26th, 2012 9:19pm

I just got the same issue.

Some background story:

I've been testing Windows 8 Release Preview since a few months back, it has been working GREAT. Never had any issues.

So today I eagerly bought and installed Windows 8 Pro and everything was fine for about an hour. I started to update a lot of native Modern Apps (xbox music, Photos, weather and such) and that worked well.

Then I moved on and started to install my old desktop apps, small programs like dropbox, Ccleaner, Winzip, Winamp and stuff like that.

After installing those programs, which I've had before on the Release Preview,  I got this really weird issue where the computer (an Acer Predator with a Nvidia card) started to get error messages, where it said it had to restart because of the issues.

And this happened after about 2 minutes every time after that I had logged in to Win 8.

So then I figured it had to be one of the apps that messed everything up, so I tried to do a System Restore, and choose a restore point from an hour earlire, when I installed the update for the windows apps. The System Restore took a really long time considering I had barely installed anything or made any changes to the overall system.

After the System restore was finished the computer just showed the black screen right after the blue windows 8 logo appears after boot.

I can NOT go into Safe mode (I've tried hitting F8 and SHIFTF8 several times).

I can get to the Bios Boot mode if I press F12.

At the black screen I can see the cursor and the black screen which flickers between really black and a bit less black :S.

Anyone?

EDIT: There seems to be a solution to this for some people:

"Ok i solve my problem , i got HDMI cable plug in to the plasma  , and after plug out Windows 8 custom screen show on my monitor :)"

But I have a DVI cable from my screen to computer, tried to take them and and plug back in but that didn't work either.

Can I reinstall Win 8 Pro somehow?

Having the same issue. I owner a HP Pavillion running Windows 7 64 Bit. Thought I'd have a look at Windows 8 and was surprised to see a 24.99 download option, was expecting like 100+ like the old days. Downloaded quickly and installed and booted, wasn't that impressed with the layout. I removed the e-mail widget / window and then I turned around and the screen had gone blank. I done a hard reset and it showed a :( face and said it had to reset, done this several times before going to repair mode. Continued to do nothing and screen went blank. Tried HDMI cable as thought it would be graphics card driver but only thing that appeared on TV was the cursor. Waste of money, have had to reinstall Windows 7 and now retry Windows 8 again, wasted several hours and lost all my data!

I too have a similar situation. I have an Alienware m14x r2 laptop. Nvidia 650M,Intel Core i7 3720QM. Bought windows 8 yesterday and chose the upgrade option with existing programs and settings. The windows upgrade assistant showed me a couple of softwares that were incompatible with win 8 so i removed it. Everything went smooth until the final preparation for booting up came. The screen started flashing as soon as it finished the bootup screen. I cant even see anything except a blue flickering screen and my fans were running at max rpm. I'm really frustrated and I've tried everything. Of Course safe mode works but thats it. I updated and downloaded new graphics drivers, on board Intel graphics and Nvidia graphics, nothing worked. Atlast I had to restore an earlier backup of windows 7.

Very disappointed Microsoft.

Hey, I have an alienware m14x R2 as well. I was having the exact same issue and after hours of trying to figure out what was wrong, all I had to do was run the windows updates. Hope this helps.

You have to go into safe mode. If you can't update windows in safe mode, then you need to disable the intel HD graphics in device manager, reboot normally, and then it should not give you a black screen. Then you want to run the windows updates. After that, go back into safe mode and re-enable the Intel HD graphics and reboot. I hope it works for you and I really hope you can understand what I am saying. I am not the best writer. Haha

Also, you should still update your drivers as well.

I have Nvidia GTX 570, Asus P8P67 Deluxe MB and after a couple of days running win8, same issue, boot to blank screen, monitor asleep. Uninstalled Nvidia drivers, reboots OK, reinstall any of there drivers, same reoccurring issue.
November 3rd, 2012 5:34am

I have been having the same issues but have been able to bounce out of it. When it boots to a blank screen i am still able to hit ctrl, alt, del and get to the task manager and all the other options on that screen in other words the shutdown restart menu as well. On reboot when i see that i'm not getting my screen when i should while its booting still i have hit the ctrl, alt, del keys at this time and i end up at my desktop. Obviously a video driver issue. Hope this helps others get to their desktops too. This blank screen doesn't happen all the time either. Seems somewhat random.

Thought i'd list my hardware setup: Intel I-5 w/HD3000, Nvidia GTX560, ASRock z77Pro MB, with 2 monitors hooked up, one to each card. Obviously the GTX560 being the main screen.

Update: Ok thought i'd update my process on the blank screen. I still do the ctrl, alt, del but i now select "signout", you'll go the retro graphic of the space needle screen just click on the screen and that'll take you back to your sign in screen, just sign in and i'm back to the desktop everytime. We shouldn't have to do any of this imo.

Hello

I logged in this morning and all i got was this black screen and movable cursor. I read up that this is a problem with some graphics cards. Mine is a INTEL GMA950. I did a cntrl+alt+del and got the task manager. I then went to file and then "run" and i typed in "msconfig" and it enter. i then went to the "tools" tab and i clicked on "system properties" and then hit launch. I then removed my graphics from device manager.

I also had GMA booster running which i uninstalled and then i rebooted and it worked.

This problem is solved...

I guess the problem is concerned with the display module controller in the BIOS which is having a slight compatibility issue with windows 8.

This issue is solved by updating the BIOS of your Laptop/PC to the latest version. You can download the latest BIOS from the website of the Laptop company/Motherboard Company.

But for updating the BIOS, you have to start your computer/Laptop for at least one time in Normal Mode. So here are the steps to do so...

1) Boot the Laptop/PC.

2) After the boot screen (The Circle Animation & Windows 8 logo), you will be presented by the lovely & awesome blank screen.

3) Wait for 1 minute so that drivers load into the memory.

4) Press the Power button of your laptop/PC for only a moment (Just Press and release it quickly. Don't hold. We don't want to shut down).

5) This will force the laptop/PC to go into Sleep mode.

6) When the laptop/PC goes in sleep, the laptop fan & other sounds will stop.

7) After 4-5 seconds, press the power button again & release it quickly.

8) Voilllaa!!! The laptop/PC starts & you are presented with the lock screen. Now..... Login! What are you waiting for! :P

This is not the permanent solution. It just lets you start you Laptop/PC.

After updating the BIOS, I strongly suggest that you must download the latest graphics driver for your Computer/Laptop to avoid any further issues.

The reason why I love this new windows 8 is because it gives me a lot of problems :). It gives me problem during installation, it gives me problem during activation, and it now gives me blank screen problem that you mention. fortunately, i can solve all of those problems with no trouble.

For the blank screen problem, it occurs after I log in to my account (not after booting). So if your situation is the same with mine, you may be able to follow my steps in solving this problem (I believe that you experience the same problem with mine because I'm also able to start my computer in safe mode, but it goes blank when it starts in normal mode).

The problem with my computer is no way related to driver because I have uninstalled (or reverted) all drivers but the problem still occurs. In my case, I believe that the problem is with the application that i install on my machine. Everything goes allright before i install my avast antivirus. but after installing it, the blank screen problem occurs. my solution is by restoring the system to any restore points before avast is installed. fortunately, the solution works perfectly.

your problem may not be related to avast, but it may be related to any applications that you recently install on your machine. therefore, i suggest you refresh or reset your windows and install all applications that you want to install on your machine one by one. restart whenever you finish installing one application so that you can find out which application causes the problem.

sorry if my english is not understandable because i'm indonesian.

Hi there,

The only advice I can give you is to try logging in with your password. I'm sure you can do that on blank screen.

After that you probably see the extended display. Press Win+P and choose "PC Screen Only". Put your PC back to sleep mode and boot up again.

I still can't find what causes the problem but I've noticed that I have that issue when I put my laptop to sleep mode with running Google Chrome browser on Desktop.

That's all. I hope it helps you.

hey everyone, finaly found the permenant fix! (my english is too bad) never mind, this fix will work for nvidia users. i know this fix is EXTREMLY WORKING! for avoid from black screen of windows 8, u need to enable the nvidia control panel. The nvidia control panel will install with the nvidia drivers and it should show under the control panel in windows! i could see the nvidia control panel in windows 7 and after installing windows 8, i couldnt see the nvidia control panel and had a black screen on start up!  so i tried reading a lot of articles which are describing the black screen issu! but few days ago i tried something my self and IT WORKS FINE AND IT WZ AMAZING! after my fix, i couldnt see any black screen.. :P (hate black screen) so this is my fix! not more hard fix! its very easy to fix! my fix is enabling the nvidia control panel in windows 8 and remove the black screen! step 1 : disconnect your internet connection! step 2 : press "windows+R" and type this command in Run windows,"regedit"             (this will open registry editor of windows 8) step 3 : navigate to the following...             "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE /SOFTWARE /NVIDIA Corporation /NVControlPanel / RegisterdServers /Overrides" step 4 : then u can see a list of REG DWORDS in blue color! forget the red one! its not useful.             double click one of a blue REG DEWORD and u can see its value data is"0". so set it to "1" and press ok. then u should do that step as same for all REG DWORDS! set the value data of all REG DWORDS to "1" step 5 : close the registry editor window and open control panel. then set your control panel "view by to category to Large Icons" step 6 : u will see the Nvidia Control panel in the list and open it. step 7 : if some multiple monitor option is enabled when u r using only single monitor, set it to single monitor! if it is already in the single monitor mode, close the control panel and reboot windows! step 8 : sometimes u will see the black screen again, if u see the black screen, turn off the computer. after few minutes turn again on the computer!  sometimes u will get the black screen at few times when u starting up windows! DONT WORRY! the nvidia control panel is switch monitors by it self and corrects the black screen after few start ups! MINE IS WORKED AFTER 3 START UPs! NOW U ARE FIXED!  post in here if there any problem guyz. hope u would be fixed after doing this! good luck! i posted my fix because i was suffering from this bug! i dont need to anyone suffer from this hateful bug!

Just came up with the same problem (Black screen and could only see cursor) and thanks to some of the idea's here, I did the following, which resolved the issue for me:

1) Pressed a key to bring up the password field (still could see nothing but black screen)
2) Entered password and pressed enter
3) My normal coloured desktop came up with the start bar on the bottom of my screen (I normally have it on top), and resolution was very low...
4) Moved the cursor over to the right to bring up the settings/devices bar down the right side of the screen
5) Selected "Devices", which gave me an option of "Second Screen"
6) Clicked on "Second Screen", which gave me 4 options (PC Screen only, Duplicate, Extend and Second Screen Only), I noticed extend was selected..
7) Selected PC Screen Only.... 3 second wait, all fixed....

This may not work for all but worked for me..

Cheers

just got the same problem like 10 minutes ago, stopped n restarted the start8 service, rebooted twice, nothing happened. Then forcefully shutdown, this time it started normally but really slow, guess I was just lucky. Not sure if I should continue using windows 8 and hope it doesn't happen again or rollback to windows 7.

Snedds thank you for posting this. After spending 5 days trying to figure out what the problem was I was just a minute away from purchasing a new Hard Disk, when I saw your post. I tried it and everything worked. Who could ever imagine that behind the black screen was hiding a fully operating system. This is incredible and at the same time something that Microsoft should look into (if anyone out there is listening).

Instead of risking your account being locked by making typos in your password try

pressing Win-P, CursorUp, Enter

Thanks Snedds. There in fact was a normal Windows 8 screen behind the black screen. Win-P, Cursor Up, Enter, brought up my password screen. In devices, second screen, mine was set to Duplicate. Changed to PC screen only and all is well Thanks again.

I experienced this issue as well. I found that I can use `CTRL` + `ALT` + `DEL` at the black screen. This allows me to start the Task Manager. Within the Task Manager select New Task (RUN) from the File menu. Type CMD and select the check box to run this command as an administrator. Within the command prompt, type `sfc/scannow` and let it scan your system. Once completed, reboot the machine by pressing `CTRL` + `ALT` + `DEL` again and select restart from the Power button on the bottom right.

Its know Windows 8 & Windows 8.1 issues & its related to Display Adapter & Monitor Driver issue. You have to boot your PC into the Safe mode to disable Display Adapter & Monitor Drivers.

Check below guide,

I'm having a similar issue with my PC running Windows 8.1 and I am at my wit's end.

The computer boots normally and begins to load Windows as usual by displaying the windows logo, but instead of the welcome screen appearing I get a black screen with a movable cursor which rapidly flashes between a usual arrow pointer and loading circle. The computer is still responding as caps lock / num lock still turn on and off on the keyboard, but key combinations like ctrl+alt+delete don't do anything. I practically mashed the entire keyboard to make sure no keys were stuck down and nothing happened on screen.

I don't have any recovery points or any windows media at all because I installed it via digital download. Handy, that. I used my wife's Windows 8 PC to create a recovery USB drive and used that to boot into recovery mode, but there's literally nothing it'll let me do. Attempts to refresh or reset the Windows installation both fail because apparently the drive is locked - and no, the drive in question does not have bitlocker enabled. I tried all the other recovery options including repairing bootmgr via command prompt, to no avail.

I have tried booting into all safe mode options, none of them work. It gets to the same black screen and then suddenly an endless stream of memory error boxes appear - I believe they were all for loginUI and mention it can't access memory at 0x000000. I have swapped and taken RAM sticks out of the computer just in case the error was caused by one of them, but it wasn't. Other options were attempted such as booting while ignoring signed drivers etc, to no avail.

I am currently at work so unfortunately I can't provide more accurate error codes or details, but as far as I can tell there is literally nothing more I am able to do. If I can't get this fixed I am tempted to walk away from it completely - in this day and age when cellphones and tablet usage is steadily rising and traditional desktop computers are slowly falling to the wayside, I find it laughable that Microsoft can push an update out that has the potential to cause such a catastrophic problem. I've been building and troubleshooting computers for 14 years and I've never seen anything like this.

I had a similar issue and while working with Microsoft on a different case they had me cut all the c:\windows\inf\OEM*.inf files to another folder and then reboot. It was taking over 4-5 minutes to sit there and get logged in, but this time it took seven seconds.

The OEM*.inf files get rebuilt each time you add a new driver for any device there are only 2 installed with windows and my PC after a upgrade from Windows 7 to 8 and 8.1 had over 200.

This was also noted that it was most noticed on people that had dual monitors. I'd give it a try and see if it fixes your issues.

I had the same problem, and when I couldn't manage to get to Safe Mode, followed the directions from your Update and, voila! Desktop screen. Have you fond a permanent fix for this or do you still boot this way every time?

I was having the same problem.
All graphics displaying correctly until I logged into the machine. Then black screen and Cursor. Ctrl Alt Delete would display the normal options but clicking Task manager for example would return you to the black screen.

The Fix that worked for me:

Start Windows in Safe Mode (Hold shift key on when pressing restart on the main log on screen.)
Select Safe mode with networking. (5)
Log onto machine with an administrative account
Go to Computer Manager
Select Local Users and Groups
Then select Groups
Add the account you are experiencing problems with to this group, This can be a local user or a Domain account.
Reboot the machine and the problem should be solved.

Not sure if this is a Win 8 problem, as I used to remove all users from the Users Group and add myself to the Administrators Group in Win 7 with no Issue.

Hope this helps somebody. Took me 3 days and three reinstalls of Windows to track it down.

Brenden

I'm also having a very similar issue. However, when I login to Microsoft Windows 8.1, it takes a really long time before I get to the Blank Screen. Also, when I'm at the Blank Screen, I can't do anything but move the Cursor. I can't even open the Task Manager. If I wait a while at the Blank Screen, then Windows 8.1 will finally show the Desktop.
June 25th, 2014 5:05pm

when I'm at the Blank Screen, I can't do anything but move the Cursor.

Try pressing Win-P, CursorUp, Enter.

I can't even open the Task Manager.

How are you trying?  If your symptom means that explorer.exe is not running Ctrl+Shift+Esc might not work, so try Ctrl+Alt+Delete.  And if that doesn't show anything then see the assumption being made above--it may be opening up off screen and then you would need to either imagine that you could see the prompt and use keyboard commands that you would do then, for example press End, Enter, Alt+Space M, CursorRight and then drag the window through the appropriate screen edge.  (CursorRight does not imply a direction for your mouse. It's just a placeholder for a keystroke needed to latch the mouse pointer onto the Task Manager's title bar so you can then drag it through the monitor's side--in whichever direction you need to do that.)

Also check the Event log to see if there are clues there about what is happening.  E.g. another poster found some which showed that both explorer.exe and taskmgr.exe had crashed.  So that would definitely affect the likelihood of the phantom monitor hypothesis being also true.

The only mention of "button" in here so far has been for two forms of Power button.  If you are implying that your keyboard is non-functional you may have to use the machine's real Power button.   <eg>

Try doing this: Go to shutdown menu and select Restart while holding SHIFT key, menu will appear where you have to select "Refresh your PC" option, this will reset all drivers and will fix the problem you have

I have found a solution to the black screen (at least it worked for me), what I did is I removed myself as administrator. Search online how to do it if you want to try this solution.
