Windows 7 x64 SP1 installation error
I am trying to install SP1 on a Windows 7 x64 machine. I initially tried t install it via Windows update and it failed and ever since then every time I start the computer it says configuring updates before logon. I have rebooted at least 10 times and everytime I get configuring updates. SP1 is not installed properly and somehow it seems stuck in a loop. I then tried to download SP1 and install manually but it goes off for 40mins "preparing for installation" and then fails with a: Installation was not successful Server execution failed Error: CO_E_SERVER_EXEC_FAILURE(0X80080005) I have: UAC disabled Redownloaded installation package 3 times (x64 version) from microsoft website Running Microsoft security essentials and have disabled realtime protection Run through the SP1 readiness tool and the tool to fix Windows update issues. Programs and features shows no installed Windows updates at all. Deleted contents of the temp folder Run SP1 as administrator Read through and tried all the Microsoft troubleshooting windows update guides. Please help!, I'm getting to the point where I think I am better off just doing a clean install however it will take me a long time to do so because of all my custom configs. Thanks

Hi, to see the cause of Windows 7 update / Service Pack failures, we must look for error messages in the following log files: Please run the Windows Explorer and go to the folder "C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\" and copy all files to your document folder, also copy the setupapi.dev.log from the folder C:\Windows\Inf, the "C:\Windows\WindowsUpdate.log" and the file "C:\Windows\winsxs\poqexec.log" to your document folder (otherwise you can't upload it), zip all files into 1 ZIP and upload the zip to your SkyDrive [1] and post a link here. Thanks very much for the reply! The Windows Modules Installer service is set to automatic but when I try to start it I get an error: "Windows could not start the Windows Modules installer service on local computer" Error 1067: The process terminated unexpectedly. I have done some searching but so far can't find any resolution. I tried running the Windows update standalone installer which installs Hotfix KB947821 but it does not resolve the issue. Reboots etc don't resolve it either. This is obviously the cause as I can no longer install the c++ 2005 redistributable either. Any ideas?

You can't install the hotfixes or C++ Runtimes because of the Windows Modules installer issue. sfc also won't work without the Windows Module Installer service. The last try would be to run an InPlace Upgrade [1][2] to repair your windows. Your programs are still usable after doing the InPlace upgrade. This repairs all missing/damaged files. Now all services should work again. Now try to install the Windows 7 Service Pack 1. This time it should work.
