Windows 7 x64 RC Sleep Mode Problem - Laptop Wakes Itself Every Few Hours
I am curious as to whether any other laptop users have encountered my problem. My new HP DV4-1287CL laptop running the Windows 7 x64 RC will go to sleep normally but then wakes itself every couple hours. It did not do this running the beta or running Vista x64 Ultimate. Before anyone asks, I have already confirmed that there are no tasks (hidden or otherwise) scheduled that would wake the machine, and have seen no unexpected processes running when I have checked. Notably, once it wakes up, it does not go back to sleep on its own even when running on battery with the lid closed. I had the battery run completely down as a result and (thankfully) apparently did not overheat the laptop when it did it in a laptop bag while flying. I remember this fun little problem vividly from the pre-SP1 Vista days on my old laptop and was not expecting a repeat with the Windows 7 RC, especially since the beta was clean on that one. Stephen

Hi swyost. sure you have tried every option possiable.in the "advanced setting" of the power options you can adjust the Balanced power plan settings or even choose other plan like power saver plan. It's all about Windows.

Assure Control Panel / System / Device Manager / Network Adapters / Power Management tab - uncheck "allow this device to wake the computer" Hope that helps.Kris

All settings have been tried, all items under task scheduler have been confirmed to not allow tasks to wake up the computer or run while on battery, and all hardware that has an option to turn on the computer has had the option turned off. The system bios has been checked and confirmed as well. As I said, once it starts up, it then doesn't even play by the power management rules in place - it will run until I either log on and put it back to sleep, or just turn it off - thatis regardless of whether the lid is even up. At this point Ihave established that at least two things are waking up the system but can only (specifically) isolate one of the them. The one that can be identified is Avast Pro. One of thewake up points isat a regularinterval and it matches the time set in Avast to check for virus updates.Vista runningAvast does not do this - neither did the beta. The other wake up point appears to be random. The Avast issue is easy enough to control/resolve. My impression of the other though is that Windows 7 is not putting the machine completely to sleep and some hardware polling is then waking it up. The reason I think that may be the case is that while battery life is better when running Windows 7, it is actually marginally poorer then Vista when unplugged and asleep/not running. My bet is this is simply the result of a beta hardware driver installed by the RC that is buried deep in the devices in Device Manager....Stephen

No offense, but please read my other replies. I think I have made it pretty clear that has already been done. The problem is not a result of a stray setting - it is a result of an interaction between the OS and Avast on one front and the OS and some element of hardware on the other. Everything that could wake the laptop has already been set to not wake it up. Quite frankly it really is very similar to pre-SP 1 days with Vista on my old Toshiba laptop - that was corrected via a bug fix from Microsoft a few months after the release of Vista but until then it would alsowake (pretty much) at random from sleep. My apologies for the rather abrupt response. Never send an e-mail or post a response when running out the door. Any feedback is appreciated - in this case it was the first thing I checked.I'll check the Event Viewer the next time it happens to see if there is a clue on that front. That identified Avast as one culprit but I hadn't paid attention to the specific times for therandom startups. My apologies again for the previous response - I was not intending to be rude....Stephen

I have this same issue, I do not have avast pro, But I do have AVG. I will check my logs next time for that. But mines more timed. Mines go offs every 50 min. 20 min till sleep and 30 before the pop. I should explain. When Mine happens, I hear a pop in my speakers, then I hear the drive spin up and monitor click on. And I'm sitting at a "locked" log in screen. Even tho I disabled it in screen saver and users area. Now I run a desktop machine, home made.

FWIW, I figured out my problem was related to Avast update cycles and an error in Microsoft's Balanced power profile. The issue resolved itself when I switched to the High Performance profile. Oddly though, it was not one of the options in the Balance power profile so I attribute it to being a beta/RC bug. In the end, since I do use a laptop, I created my own Balanced profile from the High Performance one (started with High Performance for AC powerand changed all the battery settings to the Power Saver profile, and then saved the combined profile to a new name). I have not had issues since that point. Admittedly, Avast left my machine yesterday after I learned it would hang at 96% when doing full scan. Eset is back on (with the firewall in interactive mode so that I don't lose my network access). Regardless, however, Avast was still on for a few days with my new power profile and it no longer woke up the machine....Stephen

HiJust to let you know my problem with Windows 7 RC (which is similar)Hardware: Gigabyte X38-DS5 with E8400 and 4GB RAM, creative X-fi soundcard and ATI 4870 graphics 650W Hiper R-series PSU.I have been running vista (32bit home premium) without any problems and it goes into sleep mode and wakes up fine.I did a fresh install of Win 7 RC 64bit build 7100 on a spare HDD and (give or take a few driver problems) it installed andruns ok(processor usage seems to be right down tho that could be down to having no apps installed lol). The only thing is that when I leave it to go into sleep mode it just keeps cycling to power up/shutdown every10 seconds or so, not even reaching POST. Pressing the start button for 4 secs doesn't work and neither does the reset button - but if I turn off at the mains it starts up fine.I have disconnected the win 7 HDD and replaced it with my original HDD with vista, andthe old system (same hardware)still works fine with sleep mode fullly functional as before (writing on it now). Any ideas what could be producing this odd behaviour?Mike (aka voxish)i feel voxish

For some reason, the RC7 has the default setting to allow device to wake the system and it is very touchy, as I had the same problem until I made the adjustment to my device... Control Panel / System / Device Manager / Network Adapters / Power Management tab - uncheck "allow this device to wake the computer"
