Windows 7 wont shut down or hibernate
Windows 7 will not shut down. When I tell it to shut down, it logs off and the shutting down blue screen appears. However, it just stays there. I have let it do that over night. It never shuts down. Also, if I close the laptop lid, it sleeps. When I open it, the screen remains black. When I put it into hibernate, the screen turns off but it seems that it is not in true hibernate mode because the fans are still running. The only way to shut down is to force and hold the power button for 5 seconds. I have been reading forums all over the place. I have spoken with DELL (I have a DELL inspiron 1545. It came with Windows 7 installed on it, this was NOT AN UPGRADE.) However, I am not using the original hard drive. My hard drive went bad several months ago and I purchased a new one from DELL. All of this began after instillation of the new hard drive. They even sent me a second new hard drive because of the issues. After seeing that it was still happening with a second new hard drive, DELL tells me it's a Windows issue or a virus issue. I use PC Tools Internet Security as my virus program. It is a paid version. I have tried MANY things I've read from different forums. Some worked for a few days and then the same problem would begin again. I would also like to note that it shuts down properly in safe mode. Things I've tried: (so many, it's hard to remember them all) Restore from a previous dateEnd process "Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service" before shut downUpdate driversUpdate BIOSReinstall Windows 7Change Power Settings back to default settings Like I said before, several of these things worked temporarily. However, after a few days of working perfectly, it goes back to the same not shutting down blue screen and sleep/hibernation issues.

This may simply be caused by a bad set of Intel Rapid Storage Technology drivers - Installing the Intel Rapid Storage Drivers try downloading and installing them from here - http://downloadcenter.intel.com/Detail_Desc.aspx?ProductID=2101&DwnldID=20624 Once complete, please reboot twice and see if that's cured the problem. Hi, If it cause blue screen, you can upload the dump file, it will help us to analyze the reason of BSOD: 1. Click Start, type %SystemRoot%\Minidump" (without quotation marks) in Search bar and press Enter. 2. Go to your Desktop, right-click on it and create a new folder named "Dump". 3. Copy all the memory dump files (looks like [Mini092008-01.dmp]) in Minidump to this folder. 4. Right-click on the Dump folder, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder". 5. Upload to SkyDrive. Furthermore, you can contact contact Microsoft Customer Support Service (CSS) for assistance so that this problem can be resolved efficiently. To: Noel D Paton I did this and it worked. I rebooted twice and it still worked. However, today, it will not shut down again. Everything I try works for a short period of time and then it stops working again. Could it be a virus? Rebekah

To:leo HuangLijun When I attempt step one, I get this message, "Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\Minidump'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." I double check the spelling but continued to get the same message. Rebekah

I have the feeling that you may have bad driver installed on one of yours. It can be anything. If you can remember when it is started then do this. click start -> in search type perfmon /rel it will open up reliability window and see any time any drivers were installed. If you can find then, the driver was maybe causing the issue. To me, it sounds like display driver can't make the decision. Try roll back the display driver. I will have a post how to roll back driver in my website. www.zon-ze.com It can be bad hardware too. If it is still warranty, tell Dell you need to replace the display. Well, start it from display.. **I remember one of my client had problem with heat issue with dell laptop, they sent new one to him.**

To: jongbeom My display driver was up to date and when I tried to roll it back, it was not an option. Rebekah
July 5th, 2012 12:47pm

then, I would say call Dell and tell them display is causing the issue and I want to replace it. if it is under warranty. I have seen a lot of display card causing similar issue. can't wake up from hibernate, blue screen and etc. is there any heat ? I can only see it is cause by hardware. when was the last time you install window 7? check virus symptoms from my website, is there any similiar you have had before after you installed? is there any folder missing? try scan with tools that i have posted in my website. I wonder it can be virus if you you have any similar virus symtpoms to what i have posted in my webiste.

It could be - or it could be file corruption. Please run a full CHKDSK and SFC scan.... type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type CHKDSK C: /R and hit the Enter key. You will be told that the drive is locked, and the CHKDSK will run at he next boot - hit the Y key, and then reboot. The chkdsk will take a few hours depending on the size of the drive, so be patient! After the CHKDSK has run, Windows should boot normally (possibly after a second auto-reboot) - then run the SFC SFC -System File Checker - Instructions Click on the Start button type in the Search box CMD.EXE right-click on the only file that is found Select Run as Administrator - the Elevated Command Prompt window should pop up At the Command prompt, type SFC /SCANNOW and hit the Enter key Wait for the scan to finish - make a note of any error messages - and then reboot. see if that helps. To: Noel D Paton I went through the processes you recommended. The only message I received said, "Resource protection did not find any integrity violations." Side note question: I noticed the command prompt was "C:\Windows\system32" Does that mean I'm running the 32 bit system? I thought I was running the 64 bit. Could this have anything to do with the problem? Rebekah

Heh- that confused the heck out of me at first, as well. The System32 folder contains 64-bit components, which may reference 32-bit components in the SysWOW64 folder. For interest, and to give us a little more to work with, please post an MAGDiag report which may trap some errors. we need to see a full copy of the report produced by the MGADiag tool (download and save to desktop - http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=52012 ) Once saved, run the tool. Click on the Continue button, which will produce the report. To copy the report to your response, click on the Copy button in the tool (ignore any error messages at this point), and then paste (using either r-click/Paste, or Ctrl+V ) into your response. Please have a look in the Event Viewer, and see if there are any reports of errors there, and what type they may be. Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

I did both of these steps and after force shutting down and rebooting, I was able to shut down properly. This seemed to work. However, like many other solutions, I'll just have to see if it lasts. So many were only temporary. However, I feel hopeful that the problem was removed by running these scans. Like I said in my original post, I have a paid for version of PC Tools Internet Security. One person told me that a possible reason for it not shutting down could be a power issue. I find that hard to believe because I don't use the battery. The computer is always plugged in. It still works without the battery so why should that have anything to do with it not shutting down? Just thought I would ask.Rebekah

I've never heard of a shutdown issue because of a bad battery (I routinely run one laptop with the battery removed, with no problems). I suspect that your friend was talking aout Power Settings, rather than the battery condition. I may have gotten somewhere with my beast here - by changing the power options in the BIOS from an S1/S3 standby option to S3 alone (Save to RAM) It may be worth checking yours to see if the same option is available to you. (check your manual for instructions and cautions!) It's past my bedtime (again) here - I'll do some more testing on the thing in the morning and see if it stays 'good' with hibernate switched back on then. Hahaha, that's what I thought about the battery story. It was a DELL technician who told me that. I think he just wanted to make a sale. He also told me that it was most likely the battery, a Windows 7 issue, or a virus. He would not suggest it was a DELL hardware or software issue. He also wanted to charge me $100 to diagnose it for me. So, here I am. Anyway, I researched a bit about the BIOS power option and it seems tricky to me. Rebekah

I *may* have solved teh sleep/hibernation problem on my beast - I just wish I knew exactly how! What anti-virus is currently installed? What other Anti-Virus has ever been installed (including any pre-installed by the manufacturer, but never activated)? What other security software is installed? What are all the 'Sleep' settings? ..... go to Power Options and select 'Change plan settings' for your current plan. Click on 'Change Advanced Power Settings' look in the list, and expand the Sleep settings, and copy all the details to your reply Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

You almost certainly got the computer with either McAfee or Norton installed - so perhaps we'd better run the removal tools for both. download and svae the following two files to your desktop. ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe disconnect from the internet, and close all windows so that nothing else is running. run the Norton tool first, as soon as it's finished, restart the computer. Now run the McAfee MCPR tool - again, as soon as it's finished, reboot. I'm not a fan of the PCTools software, but I have no definite conerns about it - we may need to remove it later, as AV's can get in the way of shutdown/sleep/hibernation. Assuming it's a paid-for version, make sure that you have the details you need to be able to uninstall and reinstall it. now test shutdown. does it work OK? I have uninstalled all suggested programs and it seems to be working.Should I reinstall PC Tools or was that the problem?Every solution so far has only been temporary. How long should I wait to reinstall (if that's what I should do)? What should I use for protection in the mean time? Rebekah

I'd rather you installed a simpler tool - MSE - to rule out problems in that respect. http://windows.microsoft.com/en-GB/windows/products/security-essentials This should also reset the Windows firewall to active during the installation, if PCTools had switched it off. Once you're happy that the shutdown problem is solved, we can start with the Sleep and Hibernation problems - but there is no point until Shutdown works properly.Noel Paton | Nil Carborundum Illegitemi | CrashFixPC | The Three-toed Sloth

I've got defender and firewall going. I just put MSE on and everything still seems fine. It is shutting down, hibernating, and sleeping. Lets see if it continues to function this way. I'll let you know. Thank you so much for all of you're help! I'll keep you posted. Hope your beast is performing better.... Rebekah
