Windows 7 won't join my Server 2003 Domain while Windows XP works fine
Windows 7 won't join my Server 2003 Domain while Windows XP works fine.
I believe this because XP is still using netbios and 7 must only use DNS. I performed some tests and it seems that my one and only server is properly providing DNS as a domain controller.
The name of the domain is DABOSS (inherited from a converted NT domain), the name of the DC where Server 2003 resides is KOBLEZ and the network suffix would be, let's just say "Server2003DC.com". My W7 workstation points to the fixed address of KOBLEZ for the
preferred DNS server. When I attempt to change from a workgroup to a domain using the name "DABOSS" alone: I get "error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR". When I use the full suffix "daboss.server2003dc.com" it takes me to a login screen prompting for a user
name and password. When I entered my user name (I'm an administrator) and my password. I get the following error message:
The following error occourred attempting to join the domain "daboss.server2003dc.com".
The network location cannot be reached.
In addition to all this, windows firewall blocks access of both XP and W7 workstations and must be disabled. How do I properly configure the firewall to allow acces by the local area network?
Here is what ipconfig displays for both workstation and server:

The behavior was changed since Windows Vista.
DNS Client Name Resolution behavior in Windows Vista vs. Windows XP

Since you disable DHCP, you need to manually assign DNS servers. Also because of this, you need to manually define the DNS suffix search list. Please note:
W7 Workstation
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : KensDT
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . :
Server 2003
Windows IP Configuration
Host Name . . . . . . . . . . . . : kobelz
Primary Dns Suffix . . . . . . . : daboss.server2003dc.com
server2003dc.com
You need to define the DNS suffix search list in Windows 7.
