Windows 7 wireless setup question
To all, I have a question on Windows 7 wireless connectivity and hope someone can help. I did the following: - 1. Start Control Panel. 2. Under Network and Internet, select View network status and tasks. 3. In left pane, select Manage wireless networks. 4. Assume I have a number of existing wireless connection icon already there. 5. Right click one and select Properties. 6. Select security tab. 7. Suppose the Security type is "802.1x"; Encryption type is "WEP", Choose a network authentication method is "Microsoft Protected EAP (PEAP)"; Remember my credentials for this connection each time I'm logged on box is checked. 8. Click Advanced settings button. 9. In Specify authentication mode drop down select "User authentication". 10. Click Save credentials button. 11. A Windows Security dialog box appears allowing me to type appropriate username and password. I then click OK. 12. OK my way out. Now I tried to connect to the wireless network using this particular connection icon. However, Windows prompts me for username and password. My question is I already saved the appropriate username and password in step 11 above. Why Windows prompts for the credentials again? Is there any way I can save the credentials so Windows rememeber it?? Any comments are welcome.

To create a new network connection, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center > Set up a new connection or network > Manually Connect to a Wireless Network > Next. Type in the Network Name (SSID), select Security Type and type in the key. You may also want to tick ‘Start this connection automatically’ and ‘Connect even if the network is not……‘ > Next. Subsequent connections will be automatic. To view connection details, go to Control Panel > All Control Panel Items > Network and Sharing Center, alongside ‘Connections:’ is the Network name (SSID). To see the Wireless key, click the SSID then Wireless Properties > Security Tab and put a tick in Show characters.

Other than the username and passphrase setting which you have input under the wireless network on comp/laptop itself, did you ensure the username and passpharse is the same on the router config page as well?

BurrWalnut, Thanks for your reply. However, please note in my original message that I am using 802.1x authentication which does not require me to type any passphrase. I only need to enter the appropriate username and password. David, Thanks for your reply. However, I am not sure why this has anything to do with router config. The problem I encountered is that in step 10 in my original message above, there is a Save Credentials button. When I click this button, a Windows Security dialog box appears prompting for the username and password. I typed in the username and password required by 802.1x and click OK. The username and password should then be cached by Windows 7 at this point so that later when I invoke this wireless connection, Windows should not prompt me for the username and password again because it is SAVED as depicted by the name of the button (Save Credentials). This is not the case, however, because whenever I invoke the particular wireless connection, Windows prompts for username and password again. After I type in the appropriate credentials, I can connect to the wireless network. But having to type in credentials every time is inconvenience at best for users. I hope I have explained myself clearly. Anyone can shed some light?

Hi, The username and password are required can be caused due to the wireless router cannot accept it for the first time. Based on the current situation, I would like to suggest update the router firmware and the wireless network card driver for Windows 7. After that, please delete the current wireless network connection and setup a new wireless network connection with WPA2 to check the result. For more information, please read: Setting up a wireless network. Hi Arthur, Thank you for your reply. I updated the wireless network card driver and it seems to have resolved the problem. I will test it for the next few days and will report back if there is any issues. Thanks again for your help.

Hi Arthur, I guess I spoke too earlier. I shut down the computer for a couple of hours and then restarted it and tried to invoke the wireless network. Windows 7 again prompted for username and password.

Do the following make sure your SSID is the same as the access points SSID.(The name of the AP) Make sure your wireless zero configuration is set to Auto in your services Under Control Panel,Administrative tools ,services. I can allso tell you that if you use a application for your PC to connect to the AP it might work saving you a lot of trouble. You aught to have got a app with your WAN card or laptop. If not download one and make sure the certificate shows all clear by windows. And enable driver signing to ensure good drivers are installed. After you have done this make sure your AP is not "killing" your WAN signal with to much output rather then set it to 50% and move up after you have done everything. Signal strength does not mean you have a good connection. And set your pc to infrastructure mode. Furthermore make sure you can access the AP without encryption. Last but not least make sure your pc's settings are exactly the same as your AP's settings.

Hi Arthur, I guess I spoke too earlier. I shut down the computer for a couple of hours and then restarted it and tried to invoke the wireless network. Windows 7 again prompted for username and password. Just as what i've mention earlier on, you need to ensure the passphrase and ssid is apply on both router and wireless network on comp/laptop itself
