Windows 7 user authentication
I am using Windows 7 Ultimate x64 on my laptop. All the drivers are installed and working just fine. At home I have a wireless network that is working just fine with WEP authentication. When I travel to my parents house, I try to connect to their network using WEP authenticationand it prompts me for the security key for the network, I input the correct key and then I get a prompt:Titled:Windows SecurityNetworkAuthenticationPlease input the user credentialsAsking for a user name and password. I have tried to enter the credentials for Windows then I get an error saying that Windows can not connect. However if I boot up Windows Vista it connects just fine, and all other computers in the house (Win XP) can connect just fine. Any ideas?

I suggest you upgrade the wireless network adapter driver. Please download the Windows 7 compatible driver from manufacturers website. If the issue still occurs, please temporary disable the firewall and anti-virus. Do you connect with a third party wireless management program? If so, I suggest that you run the program as administrator, or switch to the Windows 7 build-in wireless management and adjust related settings.Arthur Xie - MSFT

I recently ran into the same problem, except that the request for unsername/passwork came after I tried to CONNECT to the network, which was sending a strong signal to my computer through the combination modem/router. When I checked Windows 7 Help, an interesting item came up: WEP authentication is not recommended. Apparently it's an old protocol used for older equipment. Whether this has anything to do with the problem, I don't know. But it does sound suspicious to this networking novice. Our network is supplied by our local cable company, with whom with upgraded our service. They came out and installed a combo modem/router after disconnect our old Linksys router. Never had a problem with the old Linksys. Just a thought. Good luck. When I finally solve my problem, I'll report again.

I had the same problem as Kenneth. I found out that if I go to the Network and Sharing Center in Control Panel; then click on "Set up a new connection or network"; then "Manually connect to a wireless network"; and enter the credentials for the wireless router manually I am able to access the internet and network without any problem (and without being asked for additional user names or passwords).
